Manager’s report It seems like just yesterday that we were trying to get used to writing “2011” on our paperwork instead of “2010,” and here the year is already drawing to a close! For us, it’s been very much busi- ness as usual—delivering high- quality services, building for the future and working to make a large and growing contribu- tion to the quality of life in this area. We have just recently completed our newest landfill section, Cell 3, and are in the process of laying down a five-foot “fluff” layer right on top of the cell’s leachate collection system. This is a layer of selected waste that has been visually screened to make sure it doesn’t contain large, solid objects like pipes or pieces of metal, and we don’t compact it at all, so it serves as an extra cushion helping to protect the integrity of the liner system. Our new liquids facility is now up and running as well. It enables us to basically con- vert liquid waste to solid waste, which is then placed in the landfill along with other municipal solid waste. We also built new sedimentation ponds in our eastern bor- row area to establish stormwater management capability in advance of future construction, and we converted a portion of our odor control system to a new, more environmentally friendly technology that employs organic oils and does not require the use of water. So from the standpoint of both op- erations and strategic planning, I’m quite proud of what we accom- plished in 2011. But just as impor- tant is what we’ve been able to give back to the community that’s both our workplace and our home. Our company-wide dedication to the environment and wildlife habitat enhancement is providing expanding envi- ronmental protection and environmental education for our neighbors. In November our wildlife program earned Corporate Lands for Learning SM (CLL) recertification from the Wildlife Habitat Council. Our efforts in this area take many forms, from hosting Earth Spirit programs for the community, to the creation of our own on-site Chaffee Wildlife Preserve, to the ways we manage our land. And we work to help make this a better home in many other ways as well. Our bi-annual Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Day enables our neighbors to safely dispose of materials that just don’t belong in the landfill. Our Waste Management Environmental Scholarships, now in their sixth year, are helping to educate the next generation of environ- mental professionals. And our strong relationships with organizations like Earth Spirit and Owl Facts are helping to increase environmental awareness and appreciation for the considerable natural beauty of this region. We also do our best to maintain open lines of communica- tion with the community. We dramatically improved our website this year to enable the public to learn more about what we’re doing. Our Open House & Information Fair brings nearly 1,000 visitors each year to see how we work and enjoy what has become a festive summertime event. While we’re all proud of these accomplish- ments, we’re also humbled by the realiza- tion that these kinds of contributions are exactly what every responsible citizen wants—to do good work, and to have a part in building a better future. So we’re very grateful to this community as well. Everyone here joins me in wishing you the happiest and most peaceful of holidays, and all the best in the new year.
