LESS IS MORE: REDUCING WASTE TO LANDFILL Managing waste is one of the greatest environmental issues facing the community today. The challenge is to reduce our rubbish through recycling, composting and the recovery of waste, which would otherwise be sent to landfill.

The NSW Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Strategy provides a framework for reducing waste and making better use of our resources.

The Strategy identifies four key areas where we must achieve outcomes: • Avoidingandpreventingwaste;

• Increaseduseofrenewableand recoveredmaterials;

• Reducingtoxicityinproductsandmaterials;and

• Reducinglitterandillegaldumping.

The vision is for an engaged community working together for sustainable waste management that will: • Viewwasteasaresourcerather

thanaproblem;

• Adjustbuyingandlivinghabitstominimise theamountofwaste;

• Developinnovativesolutionstoavoid generatingwaste;

• Havecreatedcost-effectivemethodsforrecovering resources so that materials can bere-used,recycledorreprocessedintovaluableproducts;

• Havecreatedbusinessopportunities dealinginunwantedmaterials;and

• Takeprideinbeingacommunitythathasa commitment to waste reduction and sustainability.

RED, YELLOW, GREEN LET’S KEEP IT CLEAN! PortMacquarie-HastingsCounciloperatesa three bin system, where residents take responsibility for separating waste into three streams;

For this system to work householders, business, industry, schools and local government must strive to reduce the amount of waste produced, and sort waste properly.

Rethink your rubbish and remember that much of your waste is actually a valuable resource.

What’s the issue with compostable organics going to landfill? All food and garden waste should go into the green bin. Organics in landfill breakdown anaerobically (without air) and produce landfill gas which is made up of mostly methane and carbondioxide.Thiscontributestotheeffectsof climate change.

Methane is 21 times more harmful to the atmospherethancarbondioxidewhichisproduced during aerobic breakdown through normal composting. In addition, organics also produce leachate (landfill liquid) which needs to be managed.

Composted organics are a source of nutrients and ‘soil carbon’ and when applied to soils assist with holding moisture and making nutrients available to plants. Compost from Cairncross Waste Management Facility is used by local farmers, landscapers and residents. You could also compost at home and use the materials on your garden.

• DO NOT place plastic bags in your green bin. Compostable material in plastic bags cannot be processed. Use only Council supplied compostable cornstarch bags.

• Compost, the end result of green waste recycling, can be purchased from the Organic Re-source Recovery Facility (ORRF) at Cairncross and used on your garden.

YELLOW RECYCLING BIN After kerbside collection, the recycled materials in our yellow recycling bin are transported totheMaterialsRecoveryFacility(MRF)atCairncross.Heretheco-mingledrecyclablesaresorted by hand and automatic sorting machines into different material types. Once sorted, the recyclables are then baled separately and transported to Sydney, Brisbane or overseas where they are sold to processing plants that manufacture the material into new products.

YELLOW BIN TIPS • DO NOT put plastic bags in your yellow bin.

Recyclable and compostable materials in plastic bags cannot be processed.

• Before you recycle, rinse containers with water. This will reduce odours.

BULKY KERBSIDE COLLECTION All residents with a domestic waste collection service may book a ‘bulky’ waste collection for a fee. This collection is for household waste (up to 2 cubic metres) including furniture, small white goods (e.g. washing machine, dryer, bar fridge) or any single item capable of being easily lifted by two people.

Items that cannot be placed out in this collection include builders’ waste, bulk motor vehicle parts, green waste, household garbage, tyres, industrial or farm waste, mattresses, fridges.

To book, call (02) 6581 8111.

Council provides all residents with a FREE kitchen bin to make it easier to place all food waste into the green Organics bin. All the contents of your green bin, including food waste is processed into compost. This reduces the amount of organic waste going to landfill and the associated problems including greenhouse gas emissions, leachates and decreasing landfill space.

Green waste is transported to the Organic Resource Recovery facility (ORRF) at Cairncross. This facility was established in 2001 to process organic waste into high quality compost, and it annually processes over 20,000 tonnes of organic material.

The material from the green bins collected from the kerbside along with other mulched bulk green organics, is shreddedandmixedwithbio-solids (sewage sludge) from Council’s Sewage Treatment Plant. It is then placed in climate-controlledtunnelstohastenthe decomposition process.

Air is forced into the material at the base of the tunnel and recycled water is added via sprays at the top of the tunnels.

Allexhaustairfromthecompostingtunnelsispassedthroughabio-filtertoremove odours and particulates. The compost is removed after about four weeks and placed in the open air to dry out. This end product is available for sale from the site in small domestic quantities to large commercial volumes.

pOWERHOUsE MUsEUM ECOLOGIC KItsThe Powerhouse Museum has created and released mobile educational resource kits to help regional communicators engage people of all ages on the topic of design for sustainability.

The Ecologic Kit has been developed specifically for regional communities and provides easy-to-use resources for teachers and council educators. It contains products which provide tangible evidence that it’s possible to meet our needs using fewer resources.

Each Kit contains a ready-made small exhibition for schools or local libraries, as well as information and product samples to be used and handled in classrooms. The principles of ‘design for environment’ espoused in the Kit can help people make the right choices when shopping, and guide the thinking of young people who will go on to become designers of the future.

The Ecologic Kit contains lesson plans to guide teachers through the Kit’s multiple resources about climate change, the carbon cycle, product lifecycles, local environmental issues and design for sustainability. There are also videos about soil salinity, conservation farming and the creation of a bird sanctuary. Forty two historic photographs from the Museum’s collection are included to encourage thoughtful discussion about social issues and the use of land, energy, materials and water.
