GAZİANTEP METROPOLITAN MUNICIPALITY Regulations
• The solid wastes, medical wastes, waste vegetable oils, and waste batteries in the province of Gaziantep are collected without harmingthe environment and disposed of through joint works with local administrations, non-governmental organizations, and licensed firms inline with the regulations published by the Ministry of Environment and Urban Planning.
• More than 20 regulations can be seen when we look at the legislation related to the environment sector, which should be implementedby the Metropolitan Municipality or within the scope of which the Metropolitan Municipality has liabilities as well. Some of them is asbelow:

GAZİANTEP METROPOLITAN MUNICIPALITY Central Landfill
• District Municipalities which are Şahinbey and Şehitkamil collects and transports solidwaste to Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality Landfill Area.
• Gaziantep has 2 Landfills. Central Landfill (1500 ton/day) and Nizip Landfill (200ton/day).
• Central Landfill site was constructed at 1996. Landfill takes 1,5 million m2 of area. It hasa capacity of 30 million m3.
• 7 million ton solid waste was stored between 1996-2015 in Central Landfill Area.
• District Municipalities which are Nizip and Karkamış brings domestic solid waste in thislandfill.
• Nizip Landfill was constructed in 2009.• It has a capacity of 2 million m3.

• GMM will construct two Solid Waste Transport Facilities in Islahiye-Nurdağı and Araban-Yavuzeli.
• UNDP is providing financial support for these Projects.

• Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality generates Electricity By Using Methane Gas From TheSolid Waste At Central Landfill Area.
• Full Capacity is 5,65 MGW/h
• It provides electricity for 3000 houses.

• Leachate is the liquid that drains or ‘leaches’ from a landfill. It varies widely incomposition regarding the age of the landfill and the type of waste that it contains.
• Leachate’s COD is 25.000-60.000 mg/L in Gaziantep.• We collect and treat all this waste water using Reverse Osmosis System.• Treatment Plant has a capacity of 312 m3/day

• Medical waste is a subset of wastes generated at health care facilities, such as hospitals,physicians' offices, dental practices, blood banks, and veterinary hospitals/clinics, as well asmedical research facilities and laboratories.
• Gaziantep Medical Waste Sterilization Facility was constructed in 2008.• All Medical Wastes are sterilized with vapor at 143°C heat, 3.2 Bar Pressure, 45 min. in
autoclave. Capacity is 21,6 ton/day.• We collect and sterilize 8 ton medical waste per day from 500 health care facilities.• Medical Solid Sterilization Facility had 4 collecting vehicles and 20 personnels in 2016.

• Vegetable waste oils and Waste Batteries are collected and disposed by GMM.• Vegatable waste oils are converted into industrial oil or used for producing energy.• Waste batteries are collected and send to licensed companies which are Exitcom and
TAP.• Expired Medicine wastes are collected and sent to İzaydaş by GMM. • GMM also audit and control all waste oil and battery sources.

• The main target of preparation of a climate change action plan is to analyze and assess thecurrent outlook of the Gaziantep city, prepare for the future threats and opportunities thatmay arise in the near future and to proactively take necessary climate change mitigation andadaptation actions.
• Identified Sources of air pollutants in Gaziantep province and assess the current situation, thecreation of regional pollution maps and studies aimed to reduce pollution.
• Passive air samplers are inexpensive compact, portable air pollutant sampling devices. GMMare monitoring air quality for this metod for 2 years. (SOx, NOx, PM10, O3, HNO3 etc.)

School
• Lessons about Environmental Awareness in Primary Schools is a lifelong processecological knowledge, attitudes, values, commitments for actions, and ethicalresponsibilities for the rational use of resources and sustainable development.
• So, GMM is organizes training programmes to all primary school students all yearlong.
• In 2016, GMM provided training and delivered gift to 40.000 students forenvironmental awareness.

GAZİANTEP METROPOLITAN MUNICIPALITY Works for Surian Guests
• Gaziantep became one of the most effected cities due to the immigration wave occuredright after the crisis.
• The number of registered Syrian refugees in Gaziantep has exceeded up to 350,000 anda large proportion of this number which is about 300,000 Syrian people live in the citycenter.
• According to TUIK data(Turkish Statistical Institute), the population of Gaziantep is1,800,000 in 2012 and as 2023 projection, it is foreseen as 2.257.278 people. However,at the end of 2015, the total population is exceeded up to 2,200,000 with Syrians livingin the city and almost it has reached to 2023 projection.
• This unexpected and rapid population growth did not only increase the demand of socialservices. Besides the social services, demand of some services such as drinkable water,sewage, environmental health, housing, parks and green areas, transportation, healthand solid waste management have also been increased.
