The daily per capita MSW generated in India ranges from about 100gms in small towns to 500 gms in large towns with an estimatedincrease @1%-1.33% annually. About 42 MMT of solid waste (1.15lakh MTPD) are generated annually by the urban population in India. The average collection efficiency for MSW in Indian cities is nearly72.5% and around 70% of the cities lack adequate waste transportcapacity. Open dumping of garbage facilitates health andenvironmental risks.

Huge opportunities exist in eastern and north-east India to work foreffective SWM and allied fides. The estimated release of methane

into the atmosphere is about39 MMT in 2047, which ispresently 10 MMT. Theestimated potential for powergeneration is 2550 MW in2012 from 148 KMTPD ofMSW and 5200 MW in 2017from 304 KMTPD of MSW.Many initiatives are beingtaken up by the Central & State
