Hello,

This month I am going to talk briefly about internet speeds,

the different types and how to check if you are getting what you pay for.

So, firstly, do you know what your connection speed should be? At work

we have Fibre Optic and at home we have ADSL, and we get simultaneous

upload and download of 100 Mbps. Your standard home connection

generally doesn't deliver that, eg you may get up to 20 Mbps and an upload

of 2. So when you run a speed test it should say 20 Mpbs download and 2

Mbps upload. How do you check? Go to www.speedtest.net and run the

test.

You can also check your local exchange to find out the different type of

connection you may be able to get, eg https://www.samknows.com/ click

on “UK Broadband availability” in the blue box at the top and then from

the left side “Exchange search” then type your town name and see what

you get. If you are not getting the speed you are paying for contact your

provider and ask for some help as they may be able to resolve it. However,

be aware, they often use the term “up to”. So you will get UP TO 20 Mbps.

Don't be afraid to change companies either. You can get some great deals

now for the internet but you will have to shop around. Check

http://www.uswitch.com/broadband/ for a better idea what you can get in

your area. Be careful about the contract length as they tend to try and push

an 18 month contract now which you may not want to be signed up to.

The best thing I can suggest is for you to ask your neighbours and friends

locally. They will probably have horror stories but you may also find

someone who is delighted with the service, speed and reliability. And don’t

be afraid to ask providers for more information, eg price guarantees, speed,

reliability and uptime promises. If you are having major problems, you have

made a complaint, and you still don’t have a solution, contact OFCOM

http://consumers.ofcom.org.uk/complain/phone-and-broadband-complaints/

Next month I am going to talk about WiFi repeaters and how systems can

be improved to give better coverage. As usual, if you have any questions,

please send me an email, Andy at [email protected]

Blooming Great Tea Party for Marie Curie

As a Marie Curie Nursing team member in Bristol and Somerset I am grateful

for the fundraising efforts of your readers which enable me and my colleagues

to help more people living with a terminal illness, and their families. I want to

ask if your readers will continue this support by hosting their own Blooming

Great Tea Party for Marie Curie between 20-29 June.

To date, Blooming Great Tea Party events across the UK have raised over

£4.5 million since the campaign started in 2008. By hosting a Blooming Great

Tea Party this summer you will be helping Marie Curie Nurses like me to

provide more hands-on care and vital emotional support. With your backing

we can do more, for more of the families who need us.

Please register to host your Blooming Great Tea Party at

www.mariecurie.org.uk/teaparty or call 0800 716 146. Share your ideas and

photos on social media using #Blooming Great. Thank you for your support.

News from the Exmoor Pony Centre Ashwick, Dulverton TA22 9QE

The next event to be held at the Centre is a Spring Activity

Afternoon on Thursday 2nd June from 12:00 till 3:00 when there

will be a variety of activities for children to enjoy, including pony rides

for anyone age 4 or above. If the weather is not friendly, everything will

take place under cover.

The ponies are preparing for lots of promotional events throughout the

summer: pony Tom started his offsite duties on Saturday 7th May when

he joined author Victoria Eveleigh to launch her new book, Katy’s Pony

Summer, at South Molton Library to the excitement of many children.

Some of you may have seen on local TV news that a man called

Michael Woodcock, a retired solicitor, is planning an ambitious feat for

this summer. Having sat on a pony for the first time at the age of 69 at

the Exmoor Pony Centre, he decided to learn how to ride and aims to

take part in the Exmoor Pony Society’s Working Hunter Class at

Dunster Country Fair on Wednesday 27th July when he will be 73.

He has a page on Facebook: Michael Woodcock -Exmoor Pony and

importantly a Just Giving page where supporters can donate:

www.justgiving.com/michael-woodcock-exmoor-pony or you can find the

link through the website www.moorlandmousietrust.org.uk Do support

him and the ponies if you possibly can, either in advance or on the day

itself and watch out for more news items.

Please note that the Exmoor Pony Centre is open to visitors between

10:00 and 4:00 on Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday

throughout the summer.
