Why Ghana?
RURAL GHANA STATISTICS
The National Literacy rate is 42.1%
Only 42% of the population has access to potable drinking water
In rural communities 89% of people have no access to public sanitary services
Limited to no access to microfinance
17.8% of rural population uses surface water as their primary water source
In 2010, Global Brigades did extensive research to select one African country for expansion. Through on the ground research in 10 African countries and statistical analysis of community need, volunteer safety, and program fit, Ghana was selected as the African country in which to start Global Brigades.

1 in 4 people in rural Ghana do not have access to clean drinking water
On average, a family spends 2 hours a day collecting water
For every 10 Water Volunteers,
A Family of 10 can access water year round.

How does Water Brigades help?
Water Brigades• Empowers communities to access clean water
• Addresses the lack of clean water access by constructing Household Rainwater Harvesters, which collect and store rainwater from a family's roof, providing consistent access to drinking and cooking water throughout the entire year.
• Work with families to construct HRH, educate on system maintenance and educate school children from the community on water, sanitation and hygiene related topics.

Day 3-7 – Infrastructure• In 5-6 days, you and your group will build
complete Household Rainwater Harvesting system(s) in the community, involving:o Digging
o Mixing concrete and mortar
o Tying steel
o Plastering
o Gutter work

Day 6-7 – Water Treatment Education
• Discuss water quality challenges with both families and school age children
• Distribute locally appropriate water filtration technologies
• Teach community members how to use filters which can improve their lives
• Help make the connection between water quality and health

Day 4-7 – Education• Teach the basics of water, hygiene, and
sanitation to primary school children and the family members you’re working with

Successful Implementations:• Five HRH just outside family members’ homes• Distribution of 12 water filtration devices• Education of ~40 students on the importance
of hygiene and hand-washing
Impact:• Over 60 community members have access to
higher quality drinking water• Students and families are educated to practice
proper hygiene, sanitation and water management
Direction: 30 families and counting signed up for HRH in Aboano.

How is your Water Brigade Funded?• Volunteers’ Program Contribution: £550 (UK), €650 (Europe) or $880 (US)• PLUS Airfare: Variable
Program Contribution Details• 10 day program• Accommodations and meals (vegetarian options available)• Clean drinking water• Airport pick-up and drop-off• In-country transportation• Translators and coordinators• Program sustainability and follow-up between brigades• Water project materials - £80, €90 or $100
