Water in Angola

• Angola has more fresh water than any other African nation.

• Angolans have twice as much water as people in Zambia and Mozambique and ten times more than South Africa.

• Rain fall 337mm or 15inches per year.

Causes of Water Problems in Angola

• Supply problems such as low water pressure.

• Faulty machinery

• Taps not functioning

• Angola’s long war.

• Postwar, poorly planned construction.

• Problems with plumbing in buildings and pipes in communities.

• 42% of 19 million people have access to clean water. This is 52% of Luanda’s population

• 60% of the population have appropriate sanitation.

• 5-7 liters per day per capita is used. However, 15 liters per day is the standard for health and hygiene.

• Highest infant mortality rate

in the world

• Water borne diseases: cholera, typhoid, malaria, diarrhea, internal parasite, hepatitis A
