Welcome to the 15th Edition of Outdoor Design Source, Australia’s most comprehensive directory of landscape and

external works, products and services. Featuring everything needed to specify an external works project, from

planning and design through to hard and soft landscaping and maintenance, Outdoor Design Source has the entire

landscape architecture, design and construction industries covered.

I first started working on Outdoor Design Source more than five years ago. I had no editorial or publishing experience – my

background was in customer service and account management. Joining the Outdoor Design Source team was a great starting

point for my foray into the publishing world. Over five years I have changed roles several times, working in marketing, as the

Editor of Poolside and Poolside Showcase and even left publishing to work in communications for a period.

But now I’m back working on another edition of Outdoor Design Source!

Coming back to Outdoor Design Source has been like coming home. While the world of Outdoor Design Source is ever

changing, it is still familiar and welcoming. Many of the same clients I worked with five years ago are still with us, as is most

of our Sales team.

I’d like to thank our loyal advertisers who continue to work with us. The landscaping and external works industry is a great

industry to work in and it’s been a pleasure getting to know you all again. And to the new companies that have joined us for this

issue, welcome to the family!

A great deal of time and effort goes into the production of Outdoor Design Source and Emil Montibeler and I would like to take

this opportunity to thank the entire team for their hard work, dedication and commitment. A big thank you also goes out to the

Industry Associations that support and endorse Outdoor Design Source. Having the support of the industry is vital to the success

of the directory and ensures Outdoor Design Source remains at the forefront of the landscape and external works industry.

We have some exciting developments happening in the area of online – with so many of us sitting in front of our

computers for eight hours each day, we are proud to have a comprehensive website to complement this print directory.

Please check it out at www.outdoordesign.com.au and feel free to send us any thoughts you may have on what

you’d like to see or to provide us with any interesting content you may have. You can always reach us via email at

[email protected] or by phone on 1800 838 888.

I hope you find this edition of Outdoor Design Source to be a vital reference tool for all your landscaping and external works needs

in the year ahead.

All the best for 2013!

T he design specifications for Grizzly Gulch at Hong Kong Disneyland required an American Wild West

frontier town to be recreated in Asia. This needed all of Design Landscapes’ considerable skills in logistics, themed concrete and hard and soft landscapes to fulfil the brief.

The most notable aspect of the project is the realistic appearance of the themed finishes. Over 4000m2 of concrete was themed to look like dirt roads, rough tracks, pot holes and mud flats.

To give the main pedestrian access path a more convincing “frontier town” main street appearance, horse and cart tracks, bear prints and a secondary layer of texturing cracks were included in the concrete, using a multi-faceted process. Even the buildings have concrete floors stamped to look like timber.

Design Landscapes is leading the way in using this type of themed concrete technology. It begins with integral coloured concrete and hand seeded aggregates – for

BUILDING NEW LANDSWhen Hong Kong Disneyland wanted three new lands built, they returned to the Australian company who performed a vital role in the construction of the base park – Design Landscapes Pty Ltd

this project, eight different aggregates were used. Then colour release agents, stamping and imprints, such as bear prints and cart tracks, were added. Retarders, acid wash and colour staining were then used.

By utilising this detailed process, Design Landscapes is able to give the concrete texture and 3D effects such as potholes and cracks. Large stones were used to blur the fixed edges to create a natural look. Not only did the concrete need to be themed correctly, it also needed to be functional, so it is 225mm thick to allow emergency vehicle access.

The themed concrete was installed on multiple fronts to ensure completion occurred within three months.

Another critical component of the design was the need for soft landscapes to screen views that distract from the Wild West theme. It was also essential they look established for opening day. To achieve these goals, mature sized trees and shrubs were used. Plants were carefully selected from around the world and imported into Hong Kong.

T he unique living wall at Tantalo Hotel was conceived by VerdeGreen, for hotel guests to benefit from nature

within a man-made environment. The living wall is a vertical bio-wall, designed to regulate ambient temperature, minimise noise, improve air quality and beautify the internal aesthetics. This piece of living art has become a favoured feature with visitors and guests for enhancing their sense of wellbeing and relaxation.

The contrast of the hotel’s exterior historical inspiration and the focus on contemporary local art on the inside gives the property a truly unique feel. Central to the hotel’s design, both physically and figuratively, is the main lounge’s “living wall”. Standing at eight metres wide and two storeys high, this sustainable, striking installation plays host to some 983 plants of native Panamanian flora, watered by reclaimed rainwater direct from the atrium’s skylights.

The ground floor lounge, with its UV-filtered atrium and two-storey green wall, is the hub of activity, where old suitcases get a second life as coffee tables. This is Panama’s first living interior wall.

CITY SANCTUARYA living wall can project a sense of calm and tranquillity, even in the busiest of places

The green wall has the capacity to consume and process the same amount of CO2 as three 5-metre high native trees, adding green building benefits to the interior of an existing hotel retrofit. A total of 827 modular recycled plastic Atlantis Gro-Wall® 3 modules were put together in a geometrical pattern to cover 48m2 of space in the lobby area.

The 983 plants of eight different native species were individually identified with an alpha-numerical code that allowed Atlantis Water Management to trace each plant and monitor its adaptation and development.

The vegetation was planted in ProTERRA GM, a specially formulated organic lightweight growing media.

This project goes to show that with some outside the square ideas, an interior wall can become a focal point and a gathering place that promotes wellbeing and provides respite from a busy city.

After an initial invitation-only pre-selection process, HUB was selected from a shortlist of world leaders in street furniture design from the US, Denmark, Spain, England and Italy.

The Lusail Development is an environment where design, architecture and engineering leaders from around the world have been brought together to create one of the most inspiring international developments in recent history. Designed by HUB’s talented in-house design team, each unique piece in the Lusail range of street furniture suites personifies exemplary design, high-quality materials and high-tech engineering.

curved edges of the coastal landscape to the biologically sculptured forms of life in the sea, HUB has captured the elegance, simplicity and beauty of the natural forms associated with the marine environment. HUB designed six unique suites of furniture, in addition to a range of customised variations of the HUB.Pole multi-functional pole system. All these solutions were also designed to withstand the harsh Middle Eastern climate, whilst maintaining a classic, timeless design.

With over 35 square kilometres of development, Lusail will be delivered in stages with certain priority areas establishing the benchmark standards of the project right from the beginning. The first rollout of furniture and poles has already begun within the Marina District situated in the Southern part of Lusail. Two premium suites of furniture including the ‘Qetaifan’, as well as the award-winning ‘Marina’ suite feature within this district and feature a common vernacular. Formal, detailed, distinctive and of the highest quality, these elements were designed to show an attention to detail and finish befitting of the luxury waterfront region. Teak and polished aluminium were utilised to reflect and reference the passing watercraft.

With the Marina Seat having recently won an Australian International Design Award, HUB’s designs are meeting the highest standards expected for use within the Lusail Development.

B oth the rooftop and third level broad-front façades of the new South Wing of the Temasek Polytechnic

in Singapore are painted with a palette of living “green”. A 3480m2 green roof blankets almost its entire rooftop, whilst a 640m2 green wall decorates two broad-front façades at the third level of the building. Elmich provides landscape engineering and architectural products and was the designer/manufacturer of the green wall and green roof systems for the new South Wing of Temasek Polytechnic in Singapore. The project was completed in 2012.

Temasek Polytechnic has a 30-hectare campus and more than 1200 academic and administrative staff catering to approximately 15,000 full-time students. Reputed for its academic programs, applied research, managerial excellence and innovative corporate culture, the Polytechnic prepares school-leavers and working adults for a future of dynamic change, with relevant knowledge, life-long skills and values.

complement each other and embodies the spirit of continuous effort by the Polytechnic to be eco-friendly and sustainable. They also serve as reminders to the Polytechnic’s student population of a need to be sensitive of their environment and encourage protection and preservation of the environment. Aesthetically pleasing, the refreshing green roof and façade walls provide a cooler and more conducive learning environment and reinforces the Polytechnic’s pledge to “bring education to life and life to education“.

On the green roof, VersiCell® drainage cells were placed between the raised ridges of the metal corrugated roof to provide a level surface for the Elmich Green Roof system to be installed. The system includes VersiDrain 25P® drainage and water retention trays followed by a geotextile filter layer that allows EnviroMix® GR, a predominantly inorganic planting media, to be placed on top. Drought-tolerant plants (cyanotiscristata, zephyranthesrosea, sedum mexicanum, tradescantiapallida, wedeliatrilobata) were specially selected for planting. An automated irrigation system delivers water and nutrients at pre-determined times and durations to the green roof.

On the façades, the Elmich VGM® Green Wall system comprising of modular Vertical Greening Modules (VGM®) planting boxes, made from recycled materials, were pre-planted in a controlled nursery environment for the selected green wall

plants (Pedilanthustithymaloides “variegated”, Exocaeriacochinensis, Polysciasfruticosa, Scheffleraarboricola “variegated”, Dracaena reflexa “green”, Dracaena reflexa “variegated”) to be established and vertically orientated before installation on-site. The versatile VGM® modular system, which also includes a stainless steel mounting system, allows attractive intricate patterns to be incorporated in the design of the living wall. Regular irrigation and supply of nutrients for selected durations at pre-determined times is delivered by an automated irrigation system.

The installation of the living roof and living wall has helped the new South Wing of the Temasek Polytechnic to clinch the BCA Green Mark for Buildings (New Non-Residential Buildings) Platinum Award 2012.

Just recently, the USTA player development team announced that it will be moving its premier junior tennis tournament, the Orange Bowl, from hard

courts to clay citing ‘concerns’ rising over the lack of US players in the world’s upper echelons of the game, the elite top 10. They believe the US will have a better chance at developing stronger, more versatile tennis players by having them learn, practise and compete on clay. European players Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer all grew up playing on clay. In Australia, Tennis Australia recognises a huge interest

in clay courts and supports Macquarie University’s recently developed clay research centre studying the benefits of clay court surface movement in the making of champions. They’ve observed that nine out of 10 of the top male tennis players in the world have spent considerable time of their development on clay. They have noted that clay courts help players develop the required patience, footwork and skills.

The rooftop installation in Paris features an authentic Australian Classic Clay™ court. The primary characteristic of the system is that it replicates traditional clay court playing characteristics whilst offering a 'waterless', low maintenance alternative. The infill being commercially sieved, colour pigmented and furnace fired, is consistent in shape and size, and offers controlled clay slide and aesthetic appeal. The coating prevents the surface from binding or compacting and contributes to the superior drainage qualities. This

technique also ensures less down time after rainfall allowing players to spend more time on the surface.

In addition, the patent claims of the Classic Clay™ offer the inbuilt raised 'Permaline' court marking system, which allows the over infilling of the court surface to settle to the precise height of the raised 'Permaline™' ensuring clear line marking definition and a clay court playing surface without adverse ball bounces. This revolutionary design results in a tennis

court that plays like clay, slides like clay, has consistent ball bounce and looks exactly like a perfectly prepared clay court, but requiring less maintenance.

Classic Clay™ is available Australia-wide and through international agents.

B unya Estate is a new residential development by Landcom located near Doonside, NSW. The Estate

is situated on the original site of the Bungarribee Homestead complex.

Landcom’s initial landscape design brief was to create several zones providing passive and active recreational space across a 30,000m2 area. Design Landscapes Pty Ltd undertook the construction of the works which honours the site’s historic significance. The project won Design Landscapes the prestigious Landscape NSW & ACT (LNA) 2012 Excellence in Landscape Construction Award – Open Space category and the 2012 Landscape Construction of the Year Award.

The broad acre site is designed over many levels – each with its own personality and design challenges.

The Homestead’s footprint, together with the original mature pine trees, holds an elevated position overlooking the western end of the park. Prior to construction, an

archaeological dig was undertaken to identify the location of the homestead’s remains. Care was taken to preserve the archaeological elements under a protective layer of sand and filter fabric.

Construction included excavation, grading, sub-soil drainage, soil amelioration, irrigation, planting and turfing, paving, stairs, handrails, balustrades, lighting and the installation of playground equipment. Plant selection and placement pays tribute to the area’s historic past by using ornamental fruit trees in the ‘orchard’ and lavender in the interpretative kitchen garden.

The works also include landmark-sized retaining walls ranging in height up to 4.5m with runs up to 50m in length. They are constructed as Class 2 off-form in-situ concrete structures with sandstone facing. The large retaining walls were formed and poured to full height in one lift in a hit and miss configuration. Sandstone was imported to the site, hand split and roughly squared

before installation. The sandstone was then dry jointed and wet fixed to the concrete walls with a rustic finish to reflect the site’s heritage.

The overall look of the site is an impressive combination of large scale retaining walls and paving, with delicate plantings reflecting the site’s early colonial history.

W anting to encourage people to use the park more throughout the working week was the main

driving force behind the upgrade of Mascot Park. The park is well located for nearby offices and businesses and it was hoped that people would come to the park to relax, eat lunch and simply get outside during the day. To achieve this goal, the furniture required needed to be both visually inviting and comfortable.

There are other areas and features of the park which focus more on other aspects of the park’s visitors, such as family, leisure and exercise, but this particular space was more about relaxation.

The seat is a stylish interpretation of a sun lounge, chosen by Street Furniture Australia who wanted to move away from heavy and rigid looking furniture and create something floating and asymmetrical.

The inspiration for the design was a flower or lily leaning forwards, with the cupped middle section inviting passers-by to lie back into the seat and relax.

The seat also pays homage to Sydney University’s chaise-style seats which were

designed by Taylor Cullity Lethlean and built by Street Furniture.

The key feature of the seat is the single ‘fin’ type leg, which supports it. The curvilinear shape of the ‘fin’ leg gives a ‘forward-leaning’ effect from the side elevation and an unsupported, floating effect from the front. Also the typical Street Furniture style battens, as used in much of its furniture since the company started 26 years ago, firmly state that this is a seat to be sat on, not just a sculpture to be admired.

The seat has been subsurface fixed into a concrete footing and paved over the fixing. This was to allow for lawn mowers to get around the seats, without needing to get too close to them. The frame is mild steel, and the battens are Western Australian Jarrah.

It’s not hard to believe the park is now a favoured spot by many a local worker, looking for the perfect escape on their lunch break.

S outh Australia’s new Super Schools will replace 20 existing schools and preschools in the north, inner-north

and north-western suburbs of Adelaide. The schools will cater for up to 4645 students and provide childcare places for a further 290 children.

The comprehensive construction services included site surveys, achieving correct bench levels, construction of drought-tolerant garden beds, construction and establishment of sports playing fields, construction and establishment of dry grassland areas, construction and installation of playgrounds including unique sandpits, installation of complex irrigation

The landscape construction for five new Super Schools has been GLG GreenLife Group’s largest project in South Australia to date

systems including mainline installation, and soil and compaction testing.

GLG GreenLife Group was engaged by national building company, Hansen Yuncken, to provide landscape construction services for five of the six new Super Schools in Adelaide’s northern suburbs. The project consisted of construction and maintenance of drought-tolerant sports turf and garden beds throughout the school sites, including site surveillance and soil testing. All garden beds required mulching to cater for drought conditions and GLG was responsible for the supply and installation of over 150,000 plants of various species and size.

GLG provided sports turf construction, including site preparation, turf sodding and hydro-seeding of the sports fields. Forward planning ensured the sports fields would be established prior to the intense traffic on the surfaces following the opening of the Super Schools. Over 35,000 tonne of material was brought onto the five sites, and the irrigation systems included both sub-surface watering and sprinkler irrigation systems to garden beds and turf areas. Water to supply the irrigations systems was harvested on-site and stored in rainwater tanks.

GLG ensured each site was resourced with a team of skilled personnel which included qualified landscapers, team leaders and landscape construction supervisors, backed up by contract managers to ensure the project progressed on schedule and on budget. Inclement weather caused delays for

some trades, but, with a systematic approach, GLG worked with the various construction and design teams on-site to meet timelines. All Super School projects had very firm schedules and GLG was able to continually meet these throughout the project with a structured and dedicated team approach.

Originally known as Grounds & Gardens, GLG GreenLife Group has grown into one of Australia’s leading open space specialists, providing a diverse range of landscape construction, open space maintenance and project management services. With its strong environmental focus, GLG applies its philosophy of “build, maintain and sustain” to all of its open space projects throughout Australia.

B rooks Reach is a Stockland development on the New South Wales south coast; a picturesque,

family-friendly master-planned residential community near Dapto. At completion, Brooks Reach will include 630 home sites set over 70 hectares and will feature parks, cycle ways and wide, open spaces.

Completed in October 2012, Emu Park, constructed by Simpson Landscapes, sits within the development and was designed to create a playspace, with BBQ area and toilet facilities, for the local community. Children of the local community played a large part in the design of the park.

The park has many different finishes and surfaces that work together and flow through the park. Varying levels and colours add a sense of movement and interest. It also allows multiple and separate areas for gathering, play and recreation. Different colours on surfaces also makes the design stand out.

To keep the space feeling close to nature and not built-up, large areas of grass and mass plantings were included. The community wanted grassy open spaces to throw down a picnic blanket, kick off their shoes and feel the joy of grass and nature beneath their feet.

A basketball court was included in the design for the bigger kids and adults to enjoy, along with a dinky track around a section of the playground. A covered shelter over seating and the BBQ provides welcome relief from the sun or rain for parents wanting to keep a close eye over their children enjoying the park facilities.

ones, this project tried to utilise playground equipment which would cater to all ages. And, in a sign of the times, the toilet facilities are fully automated and self-cleaning.

Retaining walls and footpaths were built out of a special concrete mix and sand blasted to expose the aggregate in walls. Wet-pour stone was used for permeable paving around an existing established tree.

The Grove Library is a new precinct that contains a state-of-the-art library facility and community centre for

the Shire of Peppermint Grove, Town of Mosman Park & Town of Cottesloe, as well as the administrative offices for the Shire of Peppermint Grove. The Newforms Design Team designed the landscape for the precinct.

The whole library precinct was built by PS Structures with Phase3 Landscape Construction providing building services for the soft landscaping and special features such as the sensory playground, light cubes and water feature.

The role of the landscape architect was very important for this project; lead landscape architect, Matt Huxtable, landscape architectural project director for Newforms Landscape Architecture, was directly involved in putting together his

own sub-consultant team as well as actively working alongside and co-ordinating the team of sub-consultants.

The project went beyond the brief and the client expectations. One of the key achievements for the Newforms team was getting the stakeholders onboard right from the start with embracing a low turf and predominately native plant palette for the landscape.

Newforms saw the project as an opportunity to demonstrate new ideas in what a Perth civic park setting could be. Newforms was keen to only have as much lawn as could be supported by the wastewater generated on-site. In this way the turf areas were broken into a number of areas (rather than one big one) to add interest and enable the native planting to juxtapose with the turf areas.

Sustainability was a key part of all aspects of the project. A summary of key points are as follows:• Full waste water reuse for landscape

irrigation• Collection and demonstration of treatment

of stormwater from road catchment• Use of endemic flora to create biodiversity

and provide the most resilient species to local conditions

• Use of recycled materials such as re-milled railway sleepers and stone quarry spoils

• Use of local materials such as Urbanstone paving

• Small water feature at entrance topped up with rainwater and sized to suit allocation of water

• Communication of the above through design of interpretive elements in the landscape

Cutting-edge design, functionality, expression and education result in an innovative community space

Page 37: Water Management

The project demonstrates innovation by going beyond best practice through its integration of cutting-edge waste water reuse technologies in the landscape. The initiatives included: brown water separation, treatment and reuse; rainwater collection; and stormwater collection.

The site is located at a low point of a major stormwater catchment area and the existing infrastructure was insufficient to deal with peak events. The civil engineering solution originally involved a massive subterranean soak well system that would have compromised the landscape by severely limiting trees and structure in the landscape. Newforms’ team designed an open sedge land basin that in storm events fills before the soak well system and subsides soon after.

This plays out as a dynamic landscape feature which depicts the transient nature of water in the Perth landscape and provides an educational element. The appropriateness to function is apparent with the landscape providing a number of spaces for different users including quiet sitting areas, a children's sensory garden space and a robust civic space.

Newforms Landscape Architecture, along with its partner company Phase3 Landscape Construction, offers a comprehensive service in the design and construction of high quality finished landscape projects. Phase3 Landscape Construction is a Perth-based landscape contracting company that offers a comprehensive service in all aspects of landscape construction.

Newforms prides itself on creative, distinctive, intuitive and sustainable solutions to the design challenges presented by the unique conditions in contemporary urban and natural Australian environments.

The pool surrounds at this Sydney 5-star hotel were looking tired after receiving little attention over a 20-year period. The

abundance of hard surfaces made the space hot and dry – not exactly the ideal conditions for an area which is intended to provide relief and relaxation for weary travellers.

Greenwall Australia was brought in to design and install a vertical garden at the hotel, with a brief to soften the hard lines of the pool area and to cool the whole space, making it a far more inviting haven for hotel guests.

The VertiGro Pro greenwall was the product used by Edward Warburton and his team at Greenwall Australia, as it had the benefits of easy installation and maintenance. Galvanised weldmesh frames were bolted to the exisiting pebblecrete walls and the VertiGro Pro pots were then clipped into place. Then, all that was required was for the irrigation to be hooked up and the wall was alive and growing!

Greenwalls are at the leading edge of contemporary architecture, enriching our living and working environments. Greenwalls are used widely to fulfil new social and environmental demands, creating lush surroundings and improving air quality both indoors and out.

Another benefit of greenwalls are that they deliver a solution to spatial challenges – they use minimal floor space yet provide large green space – making them perfect for a wide variety of applications, including hotel pool areas, commercial reception areas and apartment balconies.

Greenwall Australia is a Sydney-based firm that designs, installs and maintains greenwalls. Established in 2005 by Edward Warburton after years of working in the more conventional landscaping field, the firm is focused on the demand for, and design opportunities created by, vertical gardens.

Greenwall Australia is the exclusive Australian distributor of the Bin Fen Greenwall System – a modular, water-efficient, lightweight, durable, cost-effective and easy-to-maintain system – that produces stunning results and can incorporate an incredible diversity of plant species.

A llianz Stadium (previously known as the Sydney Football Stadium) is one of Australia’s foremost sporting

facilities playing host to Rugby League, Union, Football as well as concerts. Following recent capital works which increased the stadium's capacity from 42,000 to 45,500, upgrades were also made to the forecourt area to create a more significant entry experience for visitors to the stadium. Central to this upgrade are the multi-functional banner poles that create a vibrant and dynamic concourse at the main gates to Allianz Stadium. These multi-functional poles, as well as the furniture elements, were designed and supplied by HUB Street Equipment.

Working with Webb Australia and Cox Architecture, HUB’s design team collaborated to integrate unique accessories such as spotlights, signage, double banners and triple light-outreaches, on its highly adaptable Multi-Functional Pole systems. Following this successful execution, HUB was then contracted to supply all new furniture required including seating and bollards. Working towards a tight deadline, with the forecourt needing to be completed before re-opening with major events in December, HUB was met with yet another challenge. Complications on-site meant poles had to be delivered in separate deliveries, but, for a company who thrives on a challenge, HUB took it all in their stride.

Following the complex delivery of the poles, S205 bollards and S202 benches were installed in the stadium forecourt. With a focus on functional, low maintenance solutions, the S205 bollards were modified to be collapsible to be more adaptable to the constantly changing conditions of their environment. Utilising minimal materials and refined contemporary forms, the S2 suite aimed to provide the stadium with beautiful, functional and robust furniture that will maintain the highest level of usability and stand the test of time.

From the elegant grain of the timber slats in the seats, to the banners flying high from the MFP Systems, HUB has contributed to a project that truly speaks for itself. After this highly successful

transformation, HUB also looks forward to the opportunity of extending its services to the next stages of the project and beyond.

repair and maintenance of waterproofing membranes. The use of Buzon Pedestals reduces the weight-bearing loads on concrete slabs by eliminating the use of sand and cement mortar beds.

The Buzon Pedestal incorporates a patented slope-correcting device, which compensates for a substrate fall of 0–5 per cent, to provide a perfectly level floor finish. The pedestals are extremely strong as they are precision-engineered from 4mm thick recycled polypropylene and capable of supporting loads of more than 1000kg per pedestal. At roof level, this load is evenly spread by the wide base area of each unit, making them ideal for almost all flat roofing substrates, eliminating damage to the waterproofing membrane. They can even be used directly over insulation material.

This decked area has become an extremely popular place for residents to gather and socialise, as well as for children to play and run around.

A nthea Reserve is in a central location on Delfin Island. This playground was designed to create a focal point

for the local community within an existing pathway network.

The aim of the project was to upgrade an existing playground to cater for the needs of the local community. The location of the playground next to the water gave an opportunity to design a playground with a nautical theme. It was also desirable to maintain views through the playground to the water. Clear and unobstructed views of the lake were maintained by carefully situating the play equipment within the playground.

Proludic supplied and installed Proludic playground equipment and wetpour rubber safety surfacing pads. The pads were installed under the slide, swing and “Speed Gyro” rotating unit.

Low post and rail fencing was used to deter young children from wandering towards the road or into the path of the moving cableway.

Proludic’s Keo the Shipwreck is the feature of the playground with a strong connection to the desired nautical theme. Keo’s design encourages imaginative and fun group play activities, with children and parents often playing together.

The Cableway provides a meeting point and is a very popular activity, with the large timber beam creating a visual link with the Keo. Dippy the Dolphin creates a link with the nautical theme and provides another group play activity.

The Speed Gyro and Swingset give active play opportunities and also encourage

O nce privately owned, this beautiful habitat is now being opened up and gifted to the residents of Stone Ridge

and surrounding communities. Through the Master Planning process, working intimately with the ecological assessments and analysis, an 80m-wide environmental corridor was retained through the property, protecting a diversity of wildlife habitat and transecting the property in a north-south direction, maintaining a critical habitat link to the region's parks and local habitat areas.

Ace Landscapes reused timber rescued from the site to construct an arbour, boardwalk, fence posts and railings, logs, bollards, seats and sculptures along with the successful transformation of an eroded waterway that promotes and protects the bio-diversity of plants and wildlife habitat.

The logs cleared from site were retained and minimal material was converted into mulch. Hollow sections of the felled trees were installed back into the retained trees as additional habitat.

Stockland commissioned Design Instincts Landscape Architects to design

WINNING WAYSConstructed by Ace Landscapes, this award-winning project includes an environmental corridor to protect native wildlife and ‘Outdoor Classrooms’ for the local school children to learn from

the ‘Outdoor Classrooms’ and lead Jinibara State School students in the preparation of artwork located in each ‘classroom’. Other organisations involved in bringing the ‘Outdoor Classrooms’ to life included local Aboriginal artist Yindi Artz, Wildlife Warriors, Moreton Bay Regional Council, Unity Water and Ace Landscapes.

Over 700 Jinibara State School students participated in creating the outdoor education areas for the benefit of Stone Ridge and its surrounding communities. The students time-capsuled a moment in their lives and have been a part of a unique education resource project. All class levels at the school prepared artwork and building materials for the development. The students created numerous pieces of ceramics, pavers, painted rocks, words, paintings, drawings, poems and fact files. These have been professionally installed into the landscape environment and the Stone Ridge ‘Outdoor Classrooms’ have become educational centres within a lively and active habitat amongst the trees.

The Stone Ridge ‘Outdoor Classrooms’ offer a great opportunity to take science out of the classroom and into the natural environment.

Water sensitive urban design (WSUD) was employed to manage the water quality on-site. With the presence of numerous Wallum Froglet habitat ponds, the design and implementation of water management techniques has been integral to the success of the Stone Ridge Environmental Corridor. The on-site water management is critical to maintaining the water quality and water pH for the Wallum Froglets in particular.

At Stone Ridge, 24.5% of the site is open space. Over 82% of the open space is high value Ecological Corridor and bio-basins for water quality. To protect the environmental corridor a path system is elevated and separates human and animal use of the Environmental Corridor but retains an intimate engagement of the environment and the atmosphere of the corridor.

The site accommodates a known koala population and requires specifically designed fencing to guide koalas and other ground fauna away from the roads and towards the fauna tunnel for safe passage. The wildlife tunnel is lined with climbing posts and rails to direct the animals using natural materials. The tunnel is expected to

become a frog habitat and accommodate other species in the hollow logs.

The quality design, construction and rejuvenation of the environmental park corridor secured Ace Landscapes the Landscape Queensland 2012 Construction of the Year award for their work on the Stone Ridge Estate.

for such a high risk site – an area in which Leda specialises.

The automatic gates not only look imposing but are manufactured with high security Palisade pickets and are commanded by an access control system. The Palisade fencing is a high security fence system with a forked top, which proves extremely difficult to pry open or climb over.

In addition to providing high quality, high security systems for compounds such as these, Leda Security Products prides itself on providing an extremely short lead-time to supply and install its products.

The bicycle parking product selected for this project was Leda’s BR11B hitching rails. Additionally a bicycle repair station was installed, which houses a variety of tools for the servicing and repair of employees’ bicycles.

Leda’s strengths include the ability to offer comprehensive perimeter security solutions. This is through its extensive support structures, comprising local sales offices and experienced

engineering and design staff, backed up by modern manufacturing facilities, installation and ongoing servicing support.

As part of its policy of ongoing improvement, Leda works continually to advance the effectiveness and efficiency of all its products.

This quirky piece of public art both tells an historic story and provides a great backdrop for photo opportunities for tourists

Considered Brisbane’s most popular public sculpture, ‘City Roos’ resides in George St just around the corner from the Queen

St Mall. The project was commissioned by Brisbane City Council as part of the George St Boulevard Redevelopment.

The design concept was based on sharing space with our natives and the conservation of our natural resources. Historical records indicate that Aborigines shared their resources with the Colonials upon first settlement. However, over time, the Colonials didn’t share their resources

with the Aborigines. The Aborigines started pilfering the Colonials' supplies and this eventually led to the Aborigines being banned from the city.

To represent the importance of sharing, plus other environmental issues where humans struggle to share space with the natives, Christopher Trotter chose to create a work based on the form of a group of kangaroos relaxing in the city.

They are comfortable and taking advantage of the facilities. One “Roo” is reclining on a park bench, while another

waits patiently for its turn beside a drinking fountain. The arrangement of the “Roos” makes for many ideal photo opportunities of sharing space with natives.

Christopher is an artist who has been creating unique public art pieces since 1994 for governments, councils, developers, universities and private practices. An important intention of his works is to add human qualities of humour and playfulness to public places.

The artwork is constructed from discarded materials. Through the careful

selection and composition of materials, Christopher breathes life and personality into the material.

Different objects have come from different pasts, different industries and even different periods of time. Some objects used have dated back to the 1800s. The works are, by their very nature, art time capsules. The chances are, some works could very well incorporate components that are relevant and identifiable to you, your job, your time.

This identifying and discovering process is important and creates an ongoing interaction between the viewer and the artwork.

In 2010 the Australian Federal Government borrowed ‘City Roos’ for display outside the entry of the Australian Pavilion at World Expo – Shanghai. During World Expo, the works were photographed by an estimated 37 million people.

MARVELLOUS MERMAID BEACH

Softening corners at the Gold Coast

EXEMPLARY PROJECTS

Page 57: Water Management

T he challenge of landscaping a beach front property at Mermaid Beach, Gold Coast, Qld was an intriguing one.

Professional Turf and Garden has great experience in making a statement in both hard and soft landscaping with stylish, lush tropical gardens. The design brief for the property at Mermaid Beach was to use high quality plants which would have the effect of providing screening for the property. The client also required a water feature at the main entrance. Other challenges were the softening of hard corners of the property along with an entrance creating great impact using a water feature and planting.

With input from owners and landscape designers, Planit Consulting, Professional Turf and Garden employed an innovative approach to planting by using ex-ground foxtail palms and ex-ground coconut palms creating a lush façade.

For beautiful, but effective screening, a wire trellis and 150L magnolia “Little Gem” was used. In addition, the highest quality Regal Grass (artificial turf ) was laid.

The overall effect was a softening of the hard edges added to by stunning cobblestone edging.

The biggest challenge in the project was the lack of road access. To overcome this, large cranes were utilised to lift ex-ground foxtail palms over the roof of a neighbouring property down into planter boxes. Large pandanus trees were removed from the site and replaced with ex-ground coconut

palms on beach side. The use of Regal Grass Delite added in a specific nature area and around the beach areas was a wonderful complement to the design. It is also maintenance free. The result is a lush, tranquil garden by the sea that is serviceable and low maintenance.

IRRIGATION

IRRIGATION AUSTRALIA LIMITEDProfileIAL is Australia's peak irrigation organisation representing members from all aspects of the urban irrigation industry including water providers, irrigation design consultants, system installers and irrigation training services. IAL can assist you to develop or locate the skills you need to manage the irrigation and watering of your urban landscape.IAL's services include:• Information – journal; technical information• Training – Introduction to Irrigation; Irrigation Efficiency course;

Irrigation Essentials Training School; plus units of competency linked to qualifications

• Irrigation Industry Certification Scheme – professional career development for those in the irrigation industry; assist customers to locate competent irrigation services

• Assist you to locate competent irrigation consultancy, design, installation and trouble shooting services

Urban IrrigationGreen landscapes provide significant environmental, economic and health benefits for our urban communities including:• Environmental benefits such as: cooling effects on buildings

to reduce energy consumption; improving urban stormwater management by reducing peak flows and run-off pollutant loads; maintaining soil structure and preventing erosion; and maintaining biodiversity in urban areas.

• Social benefits such as: preventative healthcare including stress reduction, depression management and avoidance of obesity; childhood development in parks and open space; commons for social interaction and cohesion; and benefits associated with organised sport.

• Economic benefits such as increased property values.Urban irrigation is fundamental to achieving these urban 'green

space' benefits. A well designed, installed and operated irrigation system that delivers the right amount of water for your landscape, to the right place at the right time will maximise these benefits to you and your property and to the wider community.

Certification and StandardsIt is generally acknowledged that standards in the irrigation industry are increasingly important in influencing performance. At a practical level, improving standards will lead to improving the efficiency of irrigation water management. Industry standards are established through applying technical standards (i.e. performance standards for equipment), technical codes of practice (i.e. practices such as design, installation and operation), and professional standards.

IAL runs a certification program aimed at recognising the skills of those involved in the industry and improving professional standards. Certification is available for irrigation designers, contractors, installers, operators and managers. Certification is based on nationally-recognised competencies that form the basis of irrigation qualifications at entry, trade and supervisory level.

IAL is an observing member of the organisation for International Standards (ISO). As such, it can comment on draft standards currently being developed for the irrigation industry. It is the only Australian industry group representing irrigation at ISO.

2013 Regional Conference & ExhibitionThe 2013 IAL Regional Conference & Exhibition will be held June 12 13 at the Pan Pacific Hotel, Perth WA.
