Water To Energy
The WTE Group plans, builds, fi nances and operates
plants for sewage disposal, drinking water supply
and energy recovery.
As one of Europe’s leading full-service plant
construction companies, our know-how is
unique in this sector. Our knowledge is systematically
directed towards future-proof solutions that
represent international bench marks in energy
effi ciency, resource management and investment
costs.
The fusion of the elements Water and Energy
effectively provides the key to achieving this objective.
By exploiting the energy sources that occur
throughout the entire process chain, our
plants will in future not only be able to operate in
an energy-independent and environmentally
friendly way, but also feed energy into the public
network.
Today, we are already committed to this approach
in 14 countries.
For our customers. And for the environment.

WTE Group is a leading European private service provider in the fi elds of water, technology and energy. Being located in Essen, North Rhine-Westphalia, the Group provides design-ing, construction and operation of engineering plants for water supply, waste water disposal, thermal waste utilisation and the generation of heat and energy. In addition to that, the Group renders professional operations- and managerial services. WTE Group is an affi liate enterprise to EVN AG, a leading international listed energy and environmental services provider from Austria, dealing in the supply of electricity, gas, heat, water, thermal waste utilisation and associated services.
Operating on an international basis, we lead numerous sub-sidiaries and project-offi ces in 14 countries or riparian states of the EU respectively. In the future, more than 16 million citizens will be supplied with our fresh water or will have their waste water treated in our plants. Moreover, we take responsibility for the technical and commercial operation of water-technological plants serving more than 5.5 million fel-low citizens. or concessionaire we contribute in particular by project-related BOOT-models (Build-Own-Operate-Transfer) to the compliance with EU guidelines, the assurance of services of general interest and public health care.
On the basis of our technological and commercial expertise we develop plant conceptions that take into consideration crucial criteria like environmental compatibility und sus-tainability with respect to long-lasting operations. Being in the position of process managers, we realise both com-pact municipal or local industrial plants, as well as projects for European metropolises and their large industry. Apply-ing latest technology and creative services we generate project specifi c optimised solutions with respect to energy consumption, utilisation of resources and investment costs. Sustainable operation in favour of our environment. For the benefi t of man, for the benefi t of nature.
Water To EnergyAs the leader of the WTE / Lidya / Kalyon consortium, we were building a sewage treatment plant for two million inhabitants in the Ataköy district of the Turkish metropolis Istanbul. Along with the construction, the project includes fi ve years of oper-ations management. Biogas is produced from the sludge. The recovered biogas, supplemented by natural gas, is burned in turbines, which produce all the power needed by the plant.

Phosphate fertiliser from sewage sludgeSewage sludge is rich in nutrients because, at the biological stage, bacteria utilise materials contained in sewage to build up biomass. In this respect nitrate, phosphate and other nutri-ent salts are especially signifi cant for agriculture.
The sludge needs to be conditioned in order to extract water from it. This is done by adding lime water for example. The addition of approximately 20 to 35 % calcium oxide in the solids content contributes signifi cantly to its effectivity as a fertiliser.
Sludge that fulfi ls sewage sludge regulations regarding the level of pollutants as well as the requirements of fertiliser regulations regarding the level of nutrients is classed as an approved fertiliser in Germany. Sewage sludge with an offi -cial “highest quality” classifi cation – possessing advantages for plant cultivation in the areas of nutrition, humus supply and lime effect – is known as ‘sewage fertiliser‘.

The current discussion about excessive heavy metal con-tent in sewage sludge has led to trials being undertaken to obtain phosphate fertiliser from incinerated sewage sludge. It is planned to produce 30,000 tons of fertiliser from sewage sludge in Berlin and Hamburg in the future. The German mar-ket currently requires 3 million tons of phosphate fertiliser.
Utilisation of heat from waste waterIn energy-optimised buildings, waste water lines continue to cause loss of warmth. The fl ow of warm waste water in larger communities is a source of warmth that can be utilised to produce warming and / or cooling energy.
This means that waste water is an innovative source of energy that can heat more than 10 % of all buildings in Germany. With modern heat exchangers and heat pumps, warming energy extracted from waste water can be used for heating buildings or tap water.

Phosphor recoveryIn Germany, about 42,000 tons of phosphor accumulates in sewage sludge and waste water per year. However, phosphor should not be present in water areas as the eutrophication damages the fl ora and fauna.
Up to 40 % of the phosphor can be recovered (approximately 15 tons of phosphor from 1,600 tons of dried sewage sludge). This is an interesting market, because there are only about 70 years worldwide reserves of phosphor, which is irreplace-able in the fertiliser market.

Production of industrial carbon dioxideIn connection with the “Factory of the Future” programme, EVN is running a pilot project at the Dürnrohr power station. Here carbon dioxide is washed out of the smoke gas, result-ing in a highly concentrated form of clean gas. This can be liquefi ed and sold as a valuable raw material.
The gas represents the starting point for many chemical syn-theses. It is used for the production of methanol, plastics such as polycarbonates (e. g. for DVDs), pain killers (e. g. aspirin), content for fi re extinguishers, certain laser techniques and of course for soft drinks.

Locations and ProjectsThe project business of WTE Group comprises a total of 94 projects, of which 81 are already completed. This means that WTE Group has responsibility for around 16.5 million PE of sewage and 1.1 million PE of drinking water per year. Additionally, about 25 % of largely international projects are operated under the leadership of WTE Group.
