Headworks: Attention to detail is the key to optimum efficiency Our machines for the further processing of extracted

(recyclable) materials present a sound overall concept for the first stage when employed in com-bination with our screens and sieves, conveying systems and shut-off devices.

The central task of the inlet works/headworks is the separation of coarse solids such as rocks, wood, foliage, sanitary products, toilet paper, etc. and also grit and grease. Reliable pre-treatment of the wastewater is crucial for all subsequent treatment processes. Blockages and obstructions are prevented in downstream biological and/or physical processes and the plant as a whole is relieved.

Here optimally matched gap width and sieve hole diameters are of particular importance. For a convincing result in municipal and industrial applications these must be perfectly adapted to the respective medium, flow rate and local installation conditions. Reliable conveying systems and shut-off devices ensure the intake/discharge and transport of water and solids.

In addition to individual components, the Aqseptence Group also develops individually designed complete solutions.

It is crucial for the subsequent treatment and recycling processes that solids are efficiently separated from industrial or municipal wastewater. Therefore, the Aqseptence Group provides products which can be ideally adapted to suit the respective requirements and conditions.

Primary and Secondary ClarificationPrimary and secondary clarifiers are designed to remove scum and solids from wastewater. The Aqseptence Group develops robust, low wear scraper technologies for the removal of sediments in circular and longitudinal tanks, which are suitable for a wide range of installation conditions and requirements.

Passavant® Scrapers for longitudinal tanks

Passavant® Scrapers for circular tanks

The sludge is removed by blades or suction pipes while scum is removed from the surface of the clarifiers. The scrapers move at a very low velocity to avoid a renewed disturbance of the sediment from the bottom of the tank.

Biological Treatment:The heart of the wastewater treatment process Downstream of the mechanical pretreatment, carbon

and nitrogen compounds as well as phosphate remain dissolved in the wastewater which have to be removed in biological processes. As these substances are natu-ral fertilizers, their untreated discharge would result in an overfertilization of water bodies and therefore have far-reaching consequences for the ecosystem.

In order to remove these harmful substances, the wastewater undergoes a number of individual pro-cesses. The nitrification process requires an oxygen rich environment to enable carbon degradation and oxidation of ammonium to nitrate. In the subsequent denitrification phase this nitrate is converted to nitro-gen and thus removed from the water. The removal of phosphate is supported with an anaerobic environment in the Bio-P-Phase.

The sludge-water-mixture from the biological treat-ment moves on to the secondary clarification where the sedimentation of sludge takes place and the clarified water will be discharged into the receiving water bodies or into an additional treatment stage.

The Aqseptence Group benefits from many years of experience in the field of wastewater treatment and provides a wide range of concepts and technologies for the entire biological treatment of modern waste-water treatment processes: from aeration technology in the aeration tank, process control engineering and optimization to robust and almost turbulence-free scraper technology for circular and longitudinal tanks.

The highly complex requirements of the biological treatment must be considered, evaluated and implemented in its entirety under varying environmental conditions. The Aqseptence Group develops custom-made concepts to ensure stable biodegradation processes and to comply with modern demands for resource and cost efficiency.

Aeration Technologies

Aeration tanks and the respective aeration equipment are the core of modern biologi cal wastewater treatment plants. Modern wastewater technology needs efficient aeration systems which ensure a high level of technical flexibility with maximum oxygen enrichment values.

Passavant® Fine Bubble Aeration Bioflex®

Biological treatment is aided by microorganisms which remove dis-solved substances. Aeration sys-tems are important as they create an oxygen rich environment and promote the mixing of the sludge and water.

The Aqseptence Group offers a wide range of efficient aeration systems for oxygenation of acti-vated sludge which are designed to meet various challenges. Sub-merged fine bubble aeration and

surface aeration are the most com-monly used aeration systems. As a supplier of both systems, we are aware of the application limits and can design and use our prod-ucts according to your specific requirements.

Our technologies are character-ized by their constantly high level of oxygen enrichment, durable construction and application flexibility.

System solutions for energy and process efficiencyThe various – partly counter-directional – processes in wastewater treatment plants place heavy demands on technical implementation procedures. A comprehensive approach is, therefore, required to ensure efficiency in the implementation of optimization measures. This is the only way to concurrently achieve the highest level of cleaning performance, stable degradation processes and minimal energy consumption.

The efficiency of wastewater treat-ment plants is determined by optimal tuning of all prevailing conditions such as, for example, ammonia-values, concentrations of substances, the use of precipi-tants and the required energy in-put. We develop transparent and user-friendly systems to efficiently optimize and coordinate your specific treatment processes. Apart from the tailored oxygen input control for the aeration process, we supply a large num-ber of additional modules (process water dosing, precipitant dosing, recirculation control, sludge age control, etc.) and also solutions for pond treatment plants.

Our systems run with high oper- ational reliability, have flexible measuring technology and achieve optimal process results with low energy consumption and reduced operating costs.

Therefore, climate-damaging CO2 emissions can also be reduced. Hundreds of wastewater treatment plants are already profiting from our holistic approach to the optimization of their processes.

Sludge Treatment:Environmentally-friendly disposal and extraction of raw materials

In the primary clarification stage, sewage sludge accrues when organic substances are degraded. This has to be purified, recycled or disposed of, but currently there are no competent standard proce-dures for further processing. In some countries the disposal of sewage sludge is carried out at landfills, for example, whilst in others some of the sludge is used as a biological fertiliser in agriculture.

As an unrestricted disposal of sludge is no longer possible at every location and the pollution levels of the “fertilizer” are a cause for environmental concern, the demand for efficient and sustainable concepts for sludge treatment is increasing.

Regardless of subsequent disposal methods it is advisable to prepare the sludge for downstream processes from an economic point of view. Separation procedures play a central role in which solids are removed from the water phase. Sludge treatment is necessary to reduce the volume and mass of sludge which accrues in the wastewater clarification process and to improve the possibilities for further utilisation. The effectiveness of the separation process has a decisive influence on the volume of sludge to be transported and disposed of.

With these aspects in mind the Aqseptence Group develops a wide range of systems and machines for sludge thickening and dewatering processes.

Increasing demands on the quality of wastewater, growing concerns regarding the disposal methods used to date and the need to retrieve raw materials from wastewater currently provide the framework for the planning of sustainable treatment technologies.

25

Page 26: Water Treatment Systems - irp-cdn.multiscreensite.com · water bodies or into an additional treatment stage. The Aqseptence Group benefits from many years of experience in the field

Sludge ThickeningSewage sludge is continuously produced in the course of wastewater treatment, which is either utilized in further processing or disposed of. A rapid concentration of the solids and a reduction of the sludge volume are the basis for the efficient treatment and disposal of sewage sludge in downstream processes.

Passavant® Gravity

Thickeners

The quantity of primary and sur-plus sludge is reduced as a result of sludge thickening procedures and therefore, disposal costs are lowered. Special stirring and scraping mechanisms reduce the water content of the sludge in the sludge thickening tank and en-able a continuous removal of still pumpable, free-flowing sludge into a collection hopper. Mechanical thickeners are used when rapid thickening is required for sludge which cannot be stabilised. These are suitable for both high and low throughput volumes and enable a high thickening concentration in an economic process with low poly mer consumption.

With its Passavant® Gravity Thickeners and the Passavant® Belt Thickener FluX-Drain, the Aqseptence Group offers particu-larly economic solutions for your specific application requirements.

In addition to the planning and installation of entire fully opera-tional sludge thickening plants, it is possible to easily integrate our systems into existing structures.

Dewatering is one of the most important processes in the entire sewage sludge treat-ment. As the burning of sewage sludge or its disposal at a landfill site, both involve costs. Sludge dewatering pays off particularly when several tons accrue each day.

Sludge Dewatering

28 Sludge Treatment

Page 29: Water Treatment Systems - irp-cdn.multiscreensite.com · water bodies or into an additional treatment stage. The Aqseptence Group benefits from many years of experience in the field

After the sludge has been stabilised and thickened, as far pos-sible, it still retains a fluid consistency. The mechanical sludge dewatering process then enables the separation/removal of a portion of the sludge water and thus reduces the total volume. Flocculating agents are added which effect a separation of the water from the sludge as a result of different electric charges.

Sewage sludge can be used in agriculture, in so far as it complies with statutory sewage sludge reg-ulations. The disposal methods are either burning or landfill sites depending on the local framework conditions.

The Aqseptence Group provides economic sludge dewatering pro-cesses which achieve optimal re-sults with low polymer consump-tion. The technical procedure involves the separation of water in a continuous process with a com-bination of separation by gravity and by pressure. Mechanical de-watering is always recommend-ed when there is a demand for

economically viable volume and weight reduction with a maximum possible solids concentration, com-bined with an optimal yield of clarified water.

Our machines are universally adaptable and therefore, are amongst the most utilized sludge dewatering machines worldwide.

Micro-Screening: The final step towards clean water

With its rotary drums, micro screens and underdrain systems for gravity filters, the Aqseptence Group offers effective and economic solutions for water purification, wastewater treatment and the process-ing of recyclable material.

Micro-screening is based on mechanical processes. Various screening technologies form the basis for the separation of liquids and solids and are decisive to the success of practical appli cations. The screening is either statically or dynamically, whereby both pro-cesses can be effected in a continuous or discontin-uous mode. Rotary drums and underdrain screens are employed for micro-screening in gravity filter systems.

Micro screen systems with rotating drums are an effective and economic alternative to conventional rakes and screens in municipal wastewater technology applications.

Our underdrain systems are suitable for use in the purification of drinking or process water and also as a third clarification stage or for complex filtration applications.

Micro-screening is the last stage in the water intake procedure and plays a particularly important role as downstream installations such as pumps and capacitors must be reliably protected against break-downs. Solids and/or contaminants are separated from the liquid phase and removed for disposal or recycling.

31

Page 32: Water Treatment Systems - irp-cdn.multiscreensite.com · water bodies or into an additional treatment stage. The Aqseptence Group benefits from many years of experience in the field

Rotary Drum and Fine Screening SystemsRotary drum screens separate, filter and sieve floating matter and particles from liquids, pro-cess water and wastewater. Each rotary drum screen is specifically designed for the respective application. A differentiation is, therefore, made between screen types which are loaded internally or externally. When ultrafine particles have to be filtered out of flows of water and waste-water, micro-sieving/screening technologies come into play.

Rotary Drum and Fine Screening Systems

Noggerath® Rotary Drum Screens

The Aqseptence Group has a broad portfolio of internally and exter-nally loaded rotary drum and micro screen systems, which have been successfully employed for many years in the separation of solids and liquids in municipal wastewater treatment plants and for the treatment of industrial process water.

The heart of the internally loaded screen design is a robust rotating drum in which the solids are re-tained, carefully dewatered and then discharged from the system. Externally loaded rotary drums are particularly suitable for float-ing, greasy and sticky solids which can be reliably separated via the surface of the rotary drum screen.

Rotary Drum Screens and Micro Sieves are an effective and eco-nomic alternative to conventional screening systems in municipal

wastewater treatment plants and are excellently suited to the treat-ment of surface water. Micro drum screen systems can be used in a wide range of applications as they offer the possibility to utilise di-verse meshes made of a wide vari-ety of materials.

Our micro screens can reliably filter out the finest particles from flows of water and wastewater with a convincingly high separa-tion performance and low cost in continuous operation.
