Potential program elements were compiled based on: resolution of site issues noted in Conditions Assessment, and ideas generated for Churchill Park through previous consultation sessions with City staff and the public, completion of survey questionnaires, and communications from individuals.

These included suggestions for new facilities and activities, as well as areas for general improvement and enhancement of the park.

Workshop Responses: ConsensusElements that PSAG members like about the alternatives include:

• Retaining the community gardens & expanding with community support.

• Naturalization / reforestation along the park perimeter to buffer existing forest.

• Preservation / repurposing of the lawn bowling clubhouse and opening it up for summer community activities. Many were in favour of an open air addition such as a deck or patio with shade structure.

• Moderately sized gazebo / picnic shelter for social gatherings, size, location, style and type of material is subject to further discussion.

• Play structure for older youth, e.g. climbing net, rock climbing structure.

• Adding shade structure, vine covered trellis, or strategic tree planting.

• Support for a teaching / story garden. No strong opinion on inclusion of a butterfly garden.

• Formalizing after hours use and/or expanding on existing school parking lot (if provision of additional parking is deemed essential, this was noted as the preferred option as it offered a beneficial solution for both school and park, and made the least impact on green space).

Workshop Responses: UnresolvedIssues that remain contentious and unresolved (for a relatively small

number of participants) include:• Development of an accessible, multi-use path system. Most supported a

single connecting pathway between Parkside Drive and Marion Avenue to resolve circulation. There were varied levels of support for pathway surfacing. Some prefer no formal pathway at all.

• Inclusion of a perimeter pathway system. Some support was expressed for a looped path system around outer edge of the park. Natural surfacing was preferred, except for important connections such as along Parkside Drive.

• The type and configuration of the sports fields. Some like the current configuration, including the retention or reinstallment of a third ball diamond, others preferred the alternative configurations.

Development of ConceptsAll responses were gathered from the PSAG meeting and workshop exercise and were analyzed by the design team.

The responses were summarized and used to formulate 3 new concepts for public review and comment.
