Shortly after prohibition ended, Wathen Medley was producing bourbon, much of which was contracted out by larger houses.Wathen discovered that some barrels were superior to others due to their location in the warehouse. The birth of Highland Queen was in 1893, when Roderick Macdonald decided to set up in business for the first time. He hadpreviously served as an apprentice to other successful businesses in the Scotch Whisky Trade, and his key desire when hefounded his own business was to gain a reputation as a whisky blender of the finest rank. The company was known asMacdonald & Muir Ltd.
Within 10 years of starting his business, Roderick Macdonald had developed his blends to the stage where he believed hecould successfully enter the production field. This resulted in the acquisition of the Glenmorangie Distillery in Tain to supplythe whisky for the base of his famous Highland Queen blend.
Coupled with whisky from this famous distillery were other first class Highland Malts, which he considered essential toproducing an outstanding blended Scotch Whisky.
The taste is light bodied and sweet with the honey and apples initially detectable on the nose picked up on tasting. There isalso a liquorice taste present at the back of the palate, which remains into the finish, which is short.

COLD is located at 22-24 Bride Lane, just off Fleet Street, in London – at the foot of the steps to St Bride’s Church.
COLD Story
Back in 1836, Charles Dickens set the Pickwick Papers in the area and it’s easy to imagine the members of the Pickwick Club,escaping the hustle and bustle of Fleet Street, to meet in a local gin-shop to plan their next adventure over a glass of thenew & sophisticated London Dry Gin.
However, although gin was becoming increasingly popular around this time, changes in legislation and taxation, had, bythen, led to the closure of all of the hundreds of small distilleries in the City of London; the last one shut up shop in 1825.
Scroll forward 187 years, to 2012 – gin is going through another renaissance driven, at least in part, by the new micro-distilleries producing a variety of small-batch artisan gins. It was time for gin-making to come back to the City.
Suitably inspired, Jonathan Clark installed two large copper stills – nicknamed Jennifer & Clarissa – into his cocktail bar –setting them behind floor to ceiling plate glass. COLD’s first gin is a City of London Dry Gin – very clean, crisp and burstingwith citrus flavour.
The COLD Bar served its first G&T at precisely 1858 on 20th December 2012 – 1858 being the year of the first gincocktail…

For every batch of vodka produced in a single still, there are three parts. The first part is known as the “heads”. These toxic,bitter alcohols are discarded. The “hearts” flow next. We collect these naturally sweet spirits one batch at a time. The finalpart is the “tails”. Most distillers recycle these musty alcohols to increase their yield. Not Boyd & Blair. We bottle only thehearts.
(80º) Slightly sweet aromas of white potato intermingle with notes of starch and parchment.
The slight natural sweetness and creamy viscosity inherent to the potato meets mid-palate flavors of cocoa bean, maple andhoney. The aftertaste is graceful, solid and simply delicious.
The owners of Boyd & Blair, Barry Young and C. Prentiss Orr, give new meaning to the phrase “handmade by locals.”Produced from an original mash using locally-grown potatoes, this batch-distilled vodka is produced by hand; in other words,without the use of automated controls. As Still Master, Barry chooses the more expensive and labor-intensive route and onlyuses the “heart of the run”, which he cuts based on taste and experience.
