What is the Danger of Lightning?

There are a number of natural forces that can present danger for otherwise healthy people. One of those is lightning. Recently a California man was killed on a beach from a lightning strike. Lightning striking a person is rare but it happens. This article will provide some information about the potential (pun intended) danger that lightning presents. Lightning is common. It is reported that lightning strikes the earth 8 million times a day. It strikes the U.S. on average about 60,000 times daily; however, not all lightning reaches the ground. It is the cloud to ground strikes that pose a danger. The highest rate of cloud to ground strikes in the U.S. is in Florida. Wisconsin does not have as many strikes as southern and coastal states partly because lightning is rare in cold weather and several months in Wisconsin are cold, but lightning is present and can pose a danger in the warm months. So what is the chance that someone will get hit by lightning? Generally it is reported that one in 500,000 to one in a million people may be injured by a lightning strike. In Wisconsin it is closer to the one in a million risk. It is reported that 10-30 percent of lightning strikes will be fatal. The lightning strike can directly hit a person, which will generally cause the heart to stop as the jolt of electricity passes through the body. However, injuries can occur from strikes that happen close by. The flash can injure the eyes, the noise can rupture eardrums, the percussion can knock people down, and the electricity conducted through objects can cause burns and muscle damage. Of all the things I have seen and taken care of over the last 30 years, I have yet to see a serious injury from

lightning. I hope I never do. If lightning injures someone, immediate care can be life saving. People who have been hit by lightning are not electrically charged. They can be touched and given first aid and CPR. The first thing to consider is whether it is safe to stay in the spot where the strike occurred. It would be wise to try to move them to a safe area because, contrary to the old saying, lightning can strike twice in the same place. In fact, it is reported that the Empire State Building in New York City is struck about 100 times every year. The best way to avoid a lightning injury is to be wary of the weather conditions and seek shelter if it appears a storm is brewing. Generally, thunder will be heard, warning that an electrical storm is approaching. The best place to be is in an enclosed building away from metal pipes, away from phones attached to a ground line (cell phones are OK), and not in contact with concrete floors or concrete walls because the concrete may have wires or metal reinforcement or metal pipes in it. A car with rubber tires with the windows rolled up is generally considered safe. Vehicles with open windows or shelters without walls and windows are not safe. If you are in the water, get out or if in a boat, get to shore. If in an open field find a low spot and crouch down but try not to lie down. Avoid tall trees or poles that can attract a strike. If on a golf course and you are wearing metal spikes take your shoes off and put your club down. Fortunately, lightning in-juries are rare. Mother Nature is powerful and deserves our respect. Someone who has a great fear of lightning is known as having astraphobia. I am hoping that you are not or will not become an astraphobe but I am suggesting you give lightning its due respect. Stay healthy my friends.
