Ian Haubert was named Valedictorian by earning the distinction of being the number one ranked senior scholar for the graduating class of 2018. Haubert earned this distinc-tion by carrying a 4.283 weighted grade point average and earning a nearly perfect 1580 on his SAT. Haubert is the son of Kenneth and Kathleen Haubert and plans to attend Kettering University to major in the Engineering field.

SALUTATORIAN Hannah Ehrhardt

Hannah Ehrhardt was named the Salu-tatorian by earning the distinction of be-ing the number two ranked senior scholar for the graduating class of 2018. Ehrhardt earned this distinction by carrying a 4.318 weighted grade point average and earning a 1490 on her SAT. By Vera [email protected]; 810-433-6823 Eric Dovre, a 2002 graduate of Holly High School, and his family are exactly where they want to be — living in Holly and making a difference in the community. After high school, Dovre attended Ferris State University and enrolled in its Professional Golf Management Program. “I graduated in 2006 with my degree in business and membership with the PGA of America. “During my time at FSU, I walked on to their men’s golf team, and in my first collegiate tournament recorded a hole-in-one. I also earned all-conference honors as a walk-on my senior year,” he said. Dovre said he spent about 10 years in the golf industry, five as a PGA professional where he played tournament golf, provided golf instruction, and helped run multiple high-end golf facilities across the country. “I was an accomplished tournament player, but my competitive playing career was cut short by low back issues with my lumbar spine,” he said. “I’ve had back problems for as long as I can remember and unfor-tunately the back is a pretty important area of the golf swing. The long and short of the diagnosis I’ve been given was that golf was no longer a viable option for a career.”

Holly grad brings love of golf home for scholarships

Despite his physical challenge, Dovre said golf is still one of his passions, even though it is no longer his career. “Golf has always been a big part of my life, and one of my greatest achieve-ments was being inducted into the Holly Athletics Hall of Fame in 2017,” Dovre said. “Being recognized for my accom-plishments in golf is such an honor, and one I am very thankful for.” In 2009 Dovre and his wife, Cara, a 2005 graduate of Holly High School, created the Growth of the Game Scholarship. It is awarded annually

to graduating seniors from the boy’s and girl’s golf teams in Holly for achievements on the golf course, in the class-room, and with commu-nity involvement. “I was the recipient of a similar award for golf when I was a senior in high school, and found out years later that the award was no longer in existence for financial reasons. “That is why we started our version of the scholar-ship, so that Holly golfers

could feel the same sense of accomplish-ment that I did when I won the award,” Dovre said. “We held our fundraiser golf outing on June 9 and with the funds raised this year for our winner we have reached the $20,000 mark since inception. Many of our past winners have gone on to play college golf or pursue golf as a career. After leaving the golf industry in 2011, Dovre got into banking and finance. “It turns out that a business degree came in handy after all,” he said. Dovre said he met his wife at Holly High School. “She is my rock,” he said. “I was a senior when I first met her and didn’t know right away that she was only a freshman. By the time I found out it was too late, I was already head over heels for her. We will be celebrat-ing 10 years of marriage this fall and we’ve been together for 16 years, since my senior year in 2002. “We have two children,” Dovre said. “Nora is 4 years old and Lincoln is 16 months. Nora will be in Pre-K at Holly El this fall. Lincoln will be at Holly El,

too, once he is old enough.” Before returning to Holly, during his golf days, Dovre said he lived and traveled all over the country. Some of those places include New York, New Jersey and Arizona. Once Cara and I were ready to start our family it was a no-brainier to come back to Michigan and Holly, I couldn’t imagine a better place to raise our kids,” he said. In his spare time, Dovre said he loves to, of course, play golf, but in moderation because of his back. “My family and I love to go for walks, especially to downtown Holly on Wednesdays in the summer for the Classic Car Shows. We also love to travel, and spend time at the pool or on the boat. Both of our kids fish and

love the water. We are passionate about Michigan State athletics and attend many football and basketball games in East Lansing.

Advice for 2018 HHS graduates “I had the privilege of being the key note speaker a few years back at the HHS senior awards assembly and one of the biggest messages I had for the graduating seniors was to always be open to change. Even the best laid out plans often go awry, so being flexible and able to adapt will go a long way as you take on whatever is next. Embrace the change as a positive, take it as a new challenge, not as negative. Having that attitude will help prepare you for the real world. Good luck and Go Bronchos!”
