Citizens of Garfield County, I was very surprised to see a solicitation on my behalf in the Thursday, December 22, 2011, issue of the Wayne & Garfield County Insider. The solicitation was asking for donations for me to attend a conference in Las Vegas, Nevada in January. The conference is sponsored by the Constitutional Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association. No one from this organization has ever contacted me in regards to attending this conference. I am also very con-cerned about the $1,000.00 fee per sheriff to attend. This seems to be an unusually high amount to pay for registra-tion. I do attend other conferences and training sessions and have never paid anywhere near this amount. Please do not donate your hard earned money for me to attend this conference. I have no immediate plans to attend.

Sincerely,Sheriff Danny Perkins, Garfield County

112th Christmas Bird Count A Big Success!

The Bryce Canyon Christmas Bird Count was held on December 15th with the help of over 25 volunteers and hundreds of students from kindergarten through 6th grade in Bryce Valley and Panguitch Elementary Schools. This was the 6th year in a row that Bryce Canyon National Park has been involved in this long-standing citizen science ef-fort by the National Audubon Society. The Bryce Canyon Natural History Association sponsors this important event that aims to count any and all bird species in the area on one day. The information is used to monitor population trends in bird species from North America and beyond! For more information on the Christmas Bird Count, check out – http://birds.audubon.org/christmas-bird-count. This year’s bird count was dedicated to an amazing lady and friend – Mrs. Marilyn Bulkley. Mrs. Bulkley was a champion of nature, including plants, rocks and all the wildlife that surrounds us in southern Utah. She loved birds and the Christmas Bird Count was one of her favorite activities. More than nature or birds, Mrs. Bulkley loved students and teaching. It was difficult completing the bird count without her, but I could see her enthusiasm in all the excitement demonstrated from students in Panguitch and Bryce Valley! In early December, K-6th classes were given a raptor (bird of prey) as their class “Team Bird” and the students were challenged to learn about their bird and do a project that would teach other students about that raptor. Raptors included the red-tailed hawk, northern harrier and Ameri-can kestrel, among others. Students rose to the challenge and did some great projects! Poster boards, research pa-pers, drawings, Christmas ornaments, fact lists and even an amazing poem were created by the students. Some of these projects are on display at the Bryce Canyon Visitor Center – come and take a look! During the day of the count over 40 species of birds were identified. We added three new species to our count circle list including a white-winged dove located by Kev-in Doxstater (Bryce Canyon Park Ranger) in the town of Tropic. Thank you to the Bryce Canyon Natural History Association, all the students, teachers and principals at Bryce Valley and Panguitch Elementary Schools, and the birding volunteers!! You made the event a huge success. I’m sure we made Mrs. Bulkley proud!

MAKE DRIVING SAFELY A NEW YEAR RESOLUTION

The Utah Safety Coun-cil urges Utahns to make a resolution this year to drive safely and observe traffic rules. This means buckling up everyone in your car on every trip, no matter how short the drive. During the New Year holiday week-end alone, two Utahns may die and many more will be injured in motor-vehicle crashes. To help ensure a safe and happy holiday sea-son the Utah Safety Council offers the following winter driving tips to make your excursions safer.

PLAN AHEAD FOR SAFETY

Schedule a preseason checkup. Ask a full-service mechanic to check your car’s battery and check or change the oil and anti-freeze. The brakes, exhaust system, headlights, heater, defroster, hoses and belts should also be inspected.Get a grip. Brand-new all-season or snow tires will perform better than tires that are nearing their limit of reliable tread wear. It’s equally important to main-tain the air pressure listed by the vehicle owner’s manual. Ask yourself, “Is this trip necessary?” Assess your own physical and emotion-al state, as well as external conditions. Tune in to radio or television broadcasts for weather and traffic news. Assemble an emergency kit. A plastic milk crate or tote bag will hold gloves, a scarf, knit cap, extra cloth-ing, ice scraper, flashlight, flares, jumper cables, wa-ter and energy bars. Other safety items you may want to include are boots, blan-kets, a snow shovel and a snowbrush.

HIT THE ROAD CAREFULLY

Do not drink and drive. Convince friends to stay

overnight, ride with some-one else, or call a taxi for them. Also, be aware of other drivers who may have had too much to drink. Alcohol-impaired drivers drive at inconsistent speeds, change lanes frequently, disregard traffic signs and drive outside of lane mark-ers. Allow extra time. Plan ahead and give yourself plenty of time to travel to your destinations. For high-way conditions, call (801) 964-6000. Buckle everybody up. Before you depart, every-one should be properly re-strained. Children under age 12 should travel in the back seat in an age appro-priate child safety restraint or seatbelt. Be kind to your battery. Make sure the heater, wip-ers, headlights and radio are all turned off before you start the engine. Make sure your vehicle is visible. Remove all snow and ice from the front and rear windshields, headlights and taillights before you drive off. Drive with head-lights on day and night. Use the low beams so that light isn’t aimed or reflected to-

ward oncoming drivers. Slow down and spread out. The three second rule can help you establish safe following distances at any speed. On icy roads, in heavy snowfall or in dense traffic, you’ll need to slow down and double or even triple the three second count to create a buffer zone. Be gentle and deliber-ate at the controls. Avoid braking too hard or abrupt-ly, which can cause one or more wheels to lock. Alter-nately, avoid stepping too forcefully on the accelera-tor, which causes wheels to over spin on slippery sur-faces. Both wheel lockup and wheel spins cause tires to lose traction. If your ve-hicle has an antilock brak-ing system (ABS), do not pump – just brake firmly. The brakes will pulse auto-matically when the system senses that the wheels are locking. Following these safety precautions can help you steer clear of winter driv-ing hazards and enjoy a safe, happy holiday season. For additional information, contact the Utah Safety Council at 801.746.SAFE (7233) or 800.933.5943.

DWR TO CONDUCT

ADMINISTRATIVE CHECKPOINTS

The Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) is plan-ning to conduct a number of administrative check-points in Wayne and Gar-field counties in the next few months. Checkpoints provide a means to contact hunters along the state’s transportation arteries. The purpose is to moni-tor compliance with hunt-ing regulations and harvest success. Where necessary, conservation officers can address violations of law, and take the opportunity to educate the public about regulations. Checkpoints will be situ-ated where they may best contact hunters and yet avoid slowing the flow of traffic. It is the responsibil-ity of the DWR to protect and conserve the state’s fish and wildlife. By so doing, the agency fulfills its mis-sion to protect the interests of Utah’s citizens.

Both the Bob Cats and the Lady Cats finished off the year with some one sided victories. The Ladies last Thursday had two games, against Cross Creek and Diamond Ranch JV teams. They came away big winners in both games. Both of these teams are supposed to field Varsity teams next year, but I don’t see how based on their ef-forts this years It does give some of the girls that don’t get much playing time, plenty of fun. The Cats first game of the New Year start on January 3 against the number 1 team in the state Bryce Valley and it will be there. Tropic is only 25 minutes away and they will need all the fan support they can get. Next up will be the always tough Piute Thunder-birds and PHS will host that game and it will be on the 5th. Jan. 6 and 7th Panguitch will be hosting the annual Sophomore Tournament, come on down and see what the future of Region 20 will be. Next week Jan 11 and 13th the girls have two away games, Valley on Wed. and Piute on Friday. The Bob Cats finished off the year with a JV game against Cross Creek and in the evening a Varsity game against Diamond Ranch, which was really one sided, something like 50 points, I hear. The Cats start the New Year off with a game here against Escalante on Jan. 4th and travel down to Valley on the 6th. On the 12th the Bob Cats will have their first big test of the year, they will be hosting the Bryce Valley Mustangs, who are rated very high. This is a must see game. There will be a sophomore tournament down in Val-ley on the13 and 14th. The wrestlers are having a lot of matches, boy do they have to be in shape. Their first match will be here against Kanab on Jan. 11th the next day the 12th at Gunnison, and at UVU for the Rocky Mountain Rumble on the 13 and 14th. Also on the 13 and 14th there a JV tournament at Gunnison. See why they are the tough guys.

PATIENT INFORMATION

Remember, if you have questions, Consult your Pharmacist.

I’ve been preparing a lesson on George Albert Smith, a former president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Teachings of Presidents of the Church, George Albert Smith, 2011). And what I love about this man is that he went out of his way to help others. I mean, delib-erately went out of his way. One time even, he gave his coat to a man working on the streets in Salt Lake City who was freezing cold and did not have a coat. As we approach 2012, let us work to be more like President Smith. Let us deliberately go out of our way to help someone else, even and es-pecially if it interrupts our agenda and daily schedule. Someone in my church recently organized a gift drive for families in need. When these families opened presents given to them, there were tears of joy and gratitude. And for one of these families, a man offered to rent them a home and to work with them on paying rent. Another per-son I know anonymously paid for a student’s tuition for a semester who other-wise couldn’t have afforded to finish her CNA program. And one more friend, as told by his wife, after he served a mission for his church to South America, worked three jobs to sup-

port not only his own fam-ily, but a family he met and became close with while serving in Argentina. Can you imagine working an extra job to support a fam-ily in another country? His wife, by the way, fully sup-ported him doing this. And for me, at least once a year, I go through all my clothes and box up ones’, even my nicest and favorites, for two young women who do not have much. Others have bought a homeless person a meal or groceries or provid-ed them employment. One more man I know, has al-ready made a list of people, once he does well, he will provide for. His list is long, too, with up to 50 names on it of people who have pro-vided for him. And for one of those family’s on his list, he wants to provide a van for them so that they can, for once, drive around as a family in one car. But it’s not just about buying or giving away things to others, it’s about serving like President Smith did. One person I heard of would scrape ice daily from a family’s car windows and clear the driveway from snow after the father had become a paraplegic. It’s been written about how wonderful it would be to bottle up the Christmas spirit so that it could con-tinue to impact throughout

the upcoming year. Author Charles Dickens wrote, “I will honor Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year.” Now’s the time for each one of us to figure out how to bottle up that Christmas spirit so that we can bring it forth into 2012. But these are individual decisions and actions. For President Smith it was, at least on one occasion, giv-ing away his coat. What-ever words and actions you will use to bring forth the Christmas spirit next year, just make sure that they are deliberate and make sure to go out of your way to help those in need. Any if they are your possessions? Make sure they are your nicest and favorite. Airport Mistletoe It was the be-ginning of De-cember. The trip

had gone reasonably well, and he was ready to go back. The airport on the other hand had turned a tacky red and green with loudspeakers blared annoy-ing elevator renditions of cherished Christmas carols. Being someone who took Christmas very seriously, and being slightly tired, he was not in a particularly good mood. Going to check in his luggage, he saw hanging mistletoe. Not real mistle-toe, but very cheap plastic with red paint on some of the rounder parts and green paint on some of the flatter and “pointier” parts, that could be taken for mistletoe only in a very Picasso sort of way. With a considerable de-gree of irritation and no-where else to vent it, he said to the lady attendant, “Even if I were not married, I would not want to kiss you under such a ghastly mock-ery of mistletoe.” “Sir, look more closely at where the mistletoe is.” (pause) “Ok, I see that it’s above the luggage scale, which is the place you’d have to step forward for a kiss.” “That’s not why it’s there.” (pause) “Ok, I give up. Why is it there?” “It’s there so you can kiss your luggage goodbye.”

Christmas Turkey One year at Christmas, Mom went to my sister’s house for the traditional feast. Knowing how gullible my sister is, Mom decided to play a trick. She told my sister that she needed something from the store. When my sister left, Mom took the turkey out of the oven, removed the stuffing, stuffed a Cornish hen, and inserted it into the turkey, then re-stuffed the turkey. She placed the bird(s) back in the oven. When it was time for dinner, my sister pulled the tur-key out of the oven and proceeded to remove the stuffing. When her serving spoon hit something, she reached in and pulled out the little bird. With a look of total shock on her face, Mother exclaimed, “Patricia, you’ve cooked a preg-nant bird!” At the reality of this horrifying news, my sister started to cry. It took the family two hours to convince her that turkeys lay eggs.

Earth Science Class The teacher of the earth science class was lecturing on map reading. After explaining about latitude, longitude, degrees and minutes the teacher asked, “Suppose I asked you to meet me for lunch at 23 degrees, 4 minutes north latitude and 45 degrees, 15 minutes east longitude?” After a confused silence, a voice volunteered, “I guess you’d be eating alone.”

Liturgical Response In our Anglican church, each service begins with a greeting. The officiating clergyman says, “The Lord be with you.” The congregation used to respond by saying, “And with thy spirit.” But, with the modernizing of the liturgy, the minister now says, “The Lord be with you,” and everyone responds with, “And also with you.” One Sunday a visiting bishop went to a church where the sound system was known to be old and unreliable. As he approached the microphone, he tapped it several times and finally said, “There’s something wrong with this!” Without hesitation, the whole congregation answered faithfully, “And also with you.”

Living Large We were four frugal young teachers. But a couple times a year we treated ourselves to the best Manhattan had to offer. As we approached the famous restaurant Lutece, we questioned whether we were dressed perfectly. Could we pass as urban sophisticates? The maitre d’ met us at the door, all smiles and bows. When he took my raincoat, I began to look over the cozy little bar and anticipate the charming basket of pastry that was our appetizer. Then the maitre d’ returned to our group, gingerly holding a fabric softener sheet that had fallen from my coat sleeve. “Madam,” he said, “Your Bounce.”

Identifying Athlete’s Foot Athlete’s foot, also known as tinea pedis, is a fungal infection that can appear in several forms. Perhaps you have noticed the area between your fourth and fifth toes has become infected, with fissures, cracking, and a wet look and feel, with whitening and/or thickening of the skin. Itching may be so severe that it requires almost constant scratch-ing. There may also be an intense, foul odor. You may notice that other spots on the foot are involved as well. Perhaps the sole and sides of the foot are affected with small blisters, scaling, swelling, and open crack-ing. Your toenails appear white or brittle, with crumbling and cracking of the nail. The nail may even lift up from its nail bed. Finally, tinea pedis that is not cured tends to be less intense during the winter and may seem to almost disappear. However, with the beginning of late spring or summer, it may return again and again unless a total cure is achieved. How Can You Treat Athlete’s Foot? There are many noninfective conditions that affect the foot, such as psoriasis and poison ivy. If you are unsure whether your problem is athlete’s foot (i.e., symptoms differ markedly from those previously explained), you should visit a physician. Your pharmacist may also be able to recognize the presence of athlete’s foot. Once athlete’s foot is confirmed, you may treat the problem with nonprescription products. Generally, OTC products are safer than prescription products, as they have fewer side effects. Used properly, nonprescription products may also cure athlete’s foot. Your pharmacist can provide full counseling information on treatment options for athlete’s foot. You must read the labels carefully and follow all directions provided. Some products (e.g., Lotrimin AF Cream, Micatin Spray Liquid, Tinactin Cream) can be used in anyone aged 2 years and above, but they must be used twice daily for 4 weeks to produce a cure. Another product (Lotrimin Ultra Cream) must only be used in those aged 12 years and above, but it can cure athlete’s foot between the toes in 1 week if used twice daily or in 4 weeks if you choose to use it only once daily. However, it will not cure athlete’s foot on the bottom or sides of the feet, which is known as moccasin type. Lamisil AT Cream can also cure athlete’s foot in those aged 12 years and above. The spray pump and solution forms only cure the condition between the toes if used twice daily for 1 week, but the cream can also cure the infection on the bottom and sides of the feet when used twice daily for 2 weeks. A newer product, Lamisil AT Gel, can cure athlete’s foot between the toes of patients aged 12 years and above when used just once daily for 1 week. This presents enhanced convenience in use, as no other product cures this quickly when used only once daily. With such an array of OTC options available to treat and even cure ath-lete’s foot, it is always a good idea to ask your phar-macist for a recommenda-tion for the most appropri-ate product.

Think back to when you were first falling in love with your spouse. Do you re-member hiding your faults? Don’t feel too bad, he or she was doing the same. Do you also remember ignoring his or her faults or viewing them in a positive light? Looking back now, you have a better idea why they say love is blind. One positive by-prod-uct of this condition was how your level of respect grew for him or her. As we notice all the good things about people, our level of respect for them increases. As respect grows, we find it easier to listen to what they say, talk in a respectful tone of voice and treat them in a respectful manner. After your wedding day you probably started to let your guard down a little. You no longer tried so hard to hide your faults. At the same time your spouse was doing the same thing. It be-came much easier for you to notice his or her faults rather than overlook them. As you began focusing on your spouse’s faults, your level of respect began to erode. You may have noticed the side effects in how you spoke, listened and treated him or her. As respect erodes, con-tempt grows. Contempt will poison your marriage and bring with it pain and mis-ery. Both respect and con-

tempt are built up by what YOU choose to dwell on. People who dwell on the faults of their spouse often try to change their spouse to meet their own expecta-tions. Ultimately, this route is met with bitter disap-pointment and frustration as each attempt creates more resistance and ultimately fails. Others choose to use their energy on becoming used to their spouse with all of his or her faults. Ultimately, they are rewarded with a healthy and happy marriage. Is this approach for ev-eryone? Of course not. One example of a fault that should never be tolerated is physical violence. Victims of domestic violence should seek professional help im-mediately. The number of people who have faults that should never be tolerated are rela-tively small. For the rest of us, tolerance can bring more joy and happiness into our marriages.

When you focus on your spouse’s positive traits and exercise tolerance with his or her faults, your respect for him or her will grow. You will find it easier to lis-ten, speak, and treat him or her respectfully. For the next three weeks make a list each day of ten positive things your spouse did. You can also take a trip down memory lane and in-clude things he or she has done in the past. Each night share a few items on your list with your spouse. In addition, make a list of four positive traits your spouse has. Each time you find yourself dwelling on your spouse’s faults, begin think-ing of this list and add to it. As you complete these two activities the level of respect you feel towards your spouse will increase and you will experience more joy and happiness and less pain and misery in your marriage.

We did have a white Christmas after all. What a wonderful Christmas it was, so many kind people mak-ing this a good Christmas for kids in our little area of the World. It has been along time since Christmas fell on Sunday and the 3 Wards combined service brought out the largest turnout I have seen in a long time. The 3 Wards Choir sang so beautiful it brought tears to my eyes. Rebecca Hol-brook who played the piano for one of the numbers is student at PHS, and is 15 years old. Kathleen Coo-per and John Yardley spoke of Jesus and the promise He brings. This was such a wonderful experience and as a thought maybe it should become a tradition, having a Panguitch City service on Christmas re-gardless of what day it falls on. What better way to cel-ebrate Christ’s birth than at Church. The Brett and Lisa Tay-lor Family are back from Alaska, along with their kids. Brett is a former Bishop and worked for the school district and Lisa was the 2nd grade teacher at the Elementary. Their daughter Shelby was married in the Alaska LDS Temple in An-chorage, on December 17th and there will be a recep-tion for Shelby and her hus-band Conrad Nelson here at the 2nd Ward LDS Church on January 7th, from 5:00 to 8:00. Welcome home Taylor’s. Also back is Dean and Angeli Sheffer. Dean went up to SLC to try his hand at being a long haul truck driver. In the couple of months that he worked he drove in 37 states. Dean is a Lion and handles the alu-minum cans for the Club. About 60,000 cans are sold to sponsor two $600 schol-arships for 2 seniors at the High School graduation. Please don’t throw trash or plastic bottles in the bins. If you have cans in with your trash, please just put it in the trash bins. One last event for the Year of 2011 and that’s the Beach Party at the Triple C on Saturday the 31st. Ev-eryone is invited and all are

welcome to this fun event. There will be food, enter-tainment, blowup slides, money pit and free bingo. This is a family affair and come on out to close out the Year with your friends. $25 for a family or $5.00 /person. Reflecting on the Year, many of the events that make living in Panguitch, again came off well. Start-ing with the Easter Egg Hunt, the fastest 15 minutes of fun there is. The Quilt Walk Festival again was a huge success and after 14 years Claudia Crump and Pat called it a day. The Bal-loon Fest just keeps getting bigger and this year’s glow on Main Street was the larg-est ever and the crowd was huge. The Gem Theater opened after being shut for 40 years and their home made ice cream is second to none. Having a theater in town is a real plus, my wife and I haven’t been to a movie in years. July 4th and the Fire Fighters fire-works are a great tradition. The Fiddlers were in town again and are always fun to hear. The 24th had the larg-est parade in a long time and the Lions Club took the Fire Fighters place in cook-ing lunch while the Fair building is in use. The Gar-field Co. Fair is the last big event of the summer and a lot of great entries in the various events that make up a County Fair. There was a fish catch, horse shoes, Commissionars free lun-cheon and last but not least the Lions Clubs demoli-tion derby. In November the Veterans Day dinner and the Panguitch City Thanksgiving dinner were all events that make Pan-guitch “A Home Town to brag about”.. All summer long the County Building has been

under construction and is taking shape and hopefully this huge undertaking will be finished by next sum-mer. We had a great win-ter with plenty of water, so much so they were running out the water of from lake to get it down so it wasn’t running over the dam. The head gate along the bottom failed, after who knows how long it was in place and the water continued to run till October, when the lake was low enough to replace the gate. The plus from all of this water was that the Piute reservoir is still full, along with Yuba Lake which is filled to the max. The gate has been replaced and the Lake is again refilling. World Wide, last March there was an earthquake off the coast of Japan and the resulting tsunami killed about 20,000 people and destroyed their nuclear re-actor. Last weeks paper reported that it will take at least 40 years to clean up the mess. The radiation is so bad that they have to invent robots to do the job. Japan is going to phase out their reactors over a 20 to 30 year period. Osama Bin Laden was taking out by our Navy Seals, in a well thought out plan, that went really well, with no injuries to any of our men. Osama was a ghost for 12 years and this was a great coup, to take him out, he was responsi-ble for thousands of deaths throughout the World. The best news of the year was our troops are out of Iraq and the 222nd is home safe for the Holidays. The Oettings wish you all a happy New Years and peace and good health, be with you. There will not be a column next week; we will be at a family reunion. Mack O.

The Wolf Den of Cub Scouts welcomes new Cub Scouts. Dallon Clarke and Ty Slaven. They are sad to lose Quayden Tebbs, Kage Ott, and Kelby Jessen who will be moving onto the Bear Den. Good luck boys and lots of success in your Bear work. Our theme for January is Positive Attitude. It is important that our cub scouts learn about having a positive attitude when fac-ing the many trials of life! Miriam Wagstaff is cur-rently in Ecuador where she will spend three weeks over Christmas. The Wag-staff Family will hold their family Christmas when Miriam gets back home. She had the opportunity to go with Randy & Jimena Barton, Randy is the son of Brant and Shanna Barton of Tropic and his wife Jime-na is from Ecuador. They are staying with Jimena’s parents. Miriam has been studying Spanish with Jime and this was an unexpected and wonderful opportunity for her to get some language immersion and get to know people from another coun-try. She calls home daily and lets everyone about the enjoyable and interesting experiences she is having. Miriam also plays viola with the with the Lyceum Chamber Ensemble, an all-strings youth orchestra directed by Denise Willey and hosted by American Heritage School located in

American Fork. Miriam also just received word that she successfully auditioned for a viola spot in the “Su-zuki Youth Orchestra of the Americas” which will take place in Minneapolis the end of May 2012. SOYA comes together on even years as par of he inernaion-al Suzuki conference. Con-gratulations to you Miriam. She is the daughter of Clay and Rebecca Wagstaff of Tropic and the granddaugh-ter of Melvin and Virginia Wetzel of Henrieville and the Fred Wagstaff’s of Can-nonville. Steven Littlefield is coming home this year to Tropic, the first time in six years, to have Christmas with his family, the Wallace Orton’s and Marion Little-field’s. With his service in Iraq and Afghanistan he has been very busy away from home. His roommate Kev-in is coming with him so it will be a great Christmas. What a pleasant day it was on Christmas. Very mild weather and lots of families visiting. As we celebrated the birth of our Savior and spent time with family and friends it was a great Christmas. It is also wonderful to see the mili-tary folks getting to come home to spend the Christ-mas season with their fami-lies. We owe them a great debt of gratitude and wish them well in their life back in the States.

Hope everyone had a Very Merry Christmas. Please call or email your news so we can share with you. Thanks VS.

Ida C. Kennedy went to be with her Heav-enly Father and family on December 22, 2011 in Helena, Montana. She also graduated from Lo-gan High School LDS Seminary in 1947. She came from a very tight knit family who spent their summers in Juniper and the remainder of the year in Burley, Idaho and Logan and Hyde Park, Utah. She was espe-cially proud of her ability to operate the farm machinery from the age of eleven. She said that the only thing she never learned how to do was to milk cows, something she never regretted. Riding horses and caring for live-stock a great love of hers. Both in school and her church, she was active in choir groups, glee club, softball, and various social orga-nizations. She was also interested in drama and speech club activities. Her interest in music continued through-out her life and she also was actively in-volved in numerous church activities and organizations for the rest of her life. She had an abiding faith in and love for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She loved health care, and worked in that field for over twenty five years. She also adored her work in the tourism trade, par-ticularly as a guide in various national parks. She worked in Bryce National Park, Yellow-stone National Park, Zion National Park, and at the Princess Lodge on the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska. Ida worked driving school buses and as a bus aide up until she had a stroke, also during that time she provided love and care for students of the Helena, Montana School District. There wass lots of coming and going taking place right brfore Christmas. Last minute shoppers making a mad dash to Wal Mart, etc. But the important thing is that fam-ily members came, from all over, to be with their family for Christmas. Garrison Lyman is home with his parents, Richard and Debbie Lyman. Brent and Patrice Cottam will have all their family here: Reggie and Shondelle Gillins and family, Ryan and Tari Cottam and family, Chad and Jordon Cottam and Nathan and Elisa Lyman, who will also share their time with Rich-ard and Debbie Lyman. Joe Brotherson, grandson of Jackie and Larry Withers came from Texas. Kaden Griffin, son of Brent and Kathy Griffin got home from his mission just in time for Christ-mas. Keaton Durfey, son of Dirk and Eva Durfey will be home from his mission by the time you read this. Students from SUU who are home are Brace Grif-fin, son of Quinn and Doneen Griffin and Mike Munson, son of Karen and Reed Munson. Peter Christensen, son of Chris and Jenifer Christensen, has been home from his mission for a while and will be going to SUU in January. Everyone was invited to the “Back to Bethlehem” pro-gram and party Dec. 19th. Nearly everyone was dressed in robes and attire for the trip. There were Wise Men, Shep-herds, animals, Mediterranean food served from tents, lots of little angels singing Christmas songs, Roman Soldiers gathering up canned food, brought by the congregation for a food drive. A depiction of Joseph and Mary and the birth of baby Jesus, as well as beautiful displays and the decora-tions almost made you feel like you were right in Bethle-hem. Many people were involved with the planning for this program and the cultural hall at the stake center was filled with people. Brent and Patrice Cottam hosted a party at the Phillips 66 Station/Subway, Dec. 21, for all their employees, from both Escalante and Boulder. And a good time was had by all! The Elementary School presented their Christmas Pro-gram on Tuesday, Dec. 20. The name of it was “The Elves’ Impersonator.” The scen-ery was terrific. So bright with all the Christmas colors. The “Elfis” was played by Jacob Harrison, who did a good impersonation of a Christmas Elvis Presley. Santa Claus was played by Cody Hatch and Mrs. Santa by Lori Torg-ersen. All the others sang and danced up a storm. They even invited the audience to join them in their last dance and, I hate to say it, but the kids out did their parents and Grandparents! Marlene Stowe was the director and with the help of the teaching staff they put on a good show! A few people have had to see the doctors on clinic day and Margie Spencer and Danielle Ganz both had surgery. So, hopefully everyone is all fixed up and ready for the holidays. We wish those who are having health problems

a speedy recovery and hope they can enjoy the holidays. We send condolences to Jen and Mark Aliprandini. Jen’s mom, Rose Marie Krall, passed away on De-cember 10 at her home here in Escalante. Jenifer and Shannon Steed had a Santa party at the “Cowboy Blues Restau-rant” On Dec. 22nd. They had an all you can eat spaghetti, salad and garlic bread meal and free photos with Santa. It was very well attended. Russell and Carol So-rensen came from St. George to spend a night with Carol’s parents, Pratt and Arcola Gates, and re-turned home on Christmas Eve. I heard a cute joke just the other day: There was this little boy who had a part in his Christmas pag-eant. His lines were: “Be-hold, I bring you tidings of great joy!” But by the time he was supposed to speak he had forgotten his lines. But, not blinking an eye, he said, “Boy, have I got great news for Y’all!” Out of the mouth of babes! I was delighted last Fri-day to receive a Christmas e-mail from Elder Tom and Sister Kay Hatch who are on a mission in Johhanesburg, South Africa. Isn’t it great that they get the news from us that far away? They said to tell all their good friends in Escalante “MERRY CHRISTMAS.” Please remember to call me with your News! “Merry Christmas” and I hope the “New Year” will be good to all of you.

DEATH CAN COMPLICATE TITLE TO ASSETS

You or someone you know may own unmarket-able assets as a result of the death of a previous owner. The asset may be real es-tate, stock in a corporation or some other asset. The title is unmarketable be-cause the property is in the name of the deceased indi-vidual. Many times when some-one dies owning property in his or her name, the surviving family members do not take the necessary steps to clear title to the property. Although this is

common, it can create fu-ture problems. If a parent, grand-parent or some other an-cestor died with real es-tate, stock or other assets in just his or her name and no probate proceeding was commenced, the assets are likely still in that person’s name and presently unmar-ketable. The assets cannot be sold or transferred be-cause title is in the name of the deceased. If someone dies with a will, the will states who is to serve as personal repre-sentative of the deceased. If there is no will, the in-testate statute of the state where the property is locat-ed specifies the priority for who is to serve as personal representative. Many families know of assets within their family that were owned by a fami-ly member that died. Often, the family does not know

what to do about the assets. In some situations, the as-sets may have significantly increased in value. Family members are often relieved to know there is a process to clear title. Determining the heirs of a deceased individual usu-ally involves several steps. Although the process can be involved, it rarely gets easier with the passage of time. Fortunately, with a little effort and sometimes a brief genealogical review to determine the heirs of a deceased property owner,

property that is presently unmarketable can once again be sold or transferred. Jeffery J. McKenna is a lo-cal attorney licensed in three states and serving clients in Utah, Nevada, and Arizona. THE FOLDED NAPKINA Truck Stop Story

I try not to be biased, but I had my doubts about hir-ing Stevie. His placement counselor assured me that he would be a good, reliable busboy. But I had never had a mentally handicapped employee and wasn’t sure I wanted one. I wasn’t sure how my customers would react to Stevie. He was short, a little dumpy with the smooth facial features and thick-tongued speech of Downs Syndrome. I wasn’t worried about most of my trucker customers because truckers don’t generally care who buses tables as long as the meatloaf platter is good and the pies are homemade. The ones who concerned me were the mouthy college kids traveling to school; the yuppie snobs who secret-ly polish their silverware with their napkins for fear of catching some dreaded “truck stop germ”; the pairs of white-shirted business men on expense accounts who think every truck stop waitress wants to be flirted with. I knew those people would be uncomfortable around Stevie so I closely watched him for the first few weeks... I shouldn’t have worried. After the first week, Ste-vie had my staff wrapped around his stubby little fin-ger, and within a month my truck regulars had adopted him as their official truck stop mascot. After that, I really didn’t care what the rest of the customers thought of him. He was like a 21-year-old in blue jeans and Nikes, eager to laugh and eager to please, but fierce in his at-tention to his duties. Every salt and pepper shaker was exactly in its place, not a breadcrumb or coffee spill was visible when Stevie got done with the table. Our only problem was persuading him to wait to clean a table until after the customers were fin-ished. He would hover in the background, shifting his weight from one foot to the other, scanning the din-ing room until a table was empty. Then he would scur-ry to the empty table and carefully bus dishes and glasses onto his cart and meticulously wipe the table up with a practiced flourish of his rag. If he thought a custom-er was watching, his brow would pucker with added concentration. He took pride in doing his job ex-actly right, and you had to

love how hard he tried to please each and every per-son he met. Over time, we learned that he lived with his moth-er, a widow who was dis-abled after repeated surger-ies for cancer. They lived on their Social Security benefits in public housing two miles from the truck stop. Their social worker, who stopped to check on him every so often, admit-ted they had fallen between the cracks. Money was tight, and what I paid him was probably the difference between them being able to live together and Stevie be-ing sent to a group home. That’s why the restaurant was a gloomy place that morning last August, the first morning in three years that Stevie missed work. He was at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester getting a new valve or something put in his heart. His social worker said that people with Downs Syndrome of-ten have heart problems at an early age so this wasn’t unexpected, and there was a good chance he would come through the surgery in good shape and be back at work in a few months. A ripple of excitement ran through the staff later that morning when word came that he was out of sur-gery, in recovery, and doing fine. Frannie, the head wait-ress, let out a war hoop and did a little dance in the aisle when she heard the good news. Bell Ringer, one of our regular trucker customers, stared at the sight of this 50-year-old grandmother of four doing a victory shim-my beside his table. Frannie blushed, smoothed her apron and shot Bell Ringer a wither-ing look. He grinned. “OK, Fran-nie, what was that all about?” he asked. “We just got word that Stevie is out of surgery and going to be okay.” “I was wondering where he was. I had a new joke to tell him. What was the sur-gery about?” Frannie quickly told Bell Ringer and the other two drivers sitting at his booth about Stevie’s surgery then sighed: “Yeah, I’m glad he is going to be OK,” she said. “But I don’t know how he and his Mom are going to handle all the bills. From what I hear, they’re barely getting by as it is.” Bell Ringer nodded

thoughtfully, and Frannie hurried off to wait on the rest of her tables. Since I hadn’t had time to round up a busboy to replace Stevie and really didn’t want to replace him, the girls were busing their own tables that day until we decided what to do. After the morning rush, Frannie walked into my of-fice. She had a couple of pa-per napkins in her hand and a funny look on her face. What’s up?” I asked. “I didn’t get that table where Bell Ringer and his friends were sitting cleared off after they left, and Pony Pete and Tony Tipper were sitting there when I got back to clean it off,” she said. “This was folded and tucked under a coffee cup.” She handed the napkin to me, and three $20 bills fell onto my desk when I opened it. On the outside, in big, bold letters, was print-ed “Something For Stevie.” “Pony Pete asked me what that was all about,” she said, “so I told him about Stevie and his Mom and everything, and Pete looked at Tony and Tony looked at Pete, and they ended up giving me this.” She handed me anoth-er paper napkin that had “’Something For Stevie”’ scrawled on its outside. Two $50 bills were tucked with-in its folds. Frannie looked at me with wet, shiny eyes, shook her head and said simply: “Truckers!!” That was three months ago. Today is Thanksgiv-ing, the first day Stevie is supposed to be back to work. His placement worker said he’s been counting the days until the doctor said he could work, and it didn’t matter at all that it was a holiday. He called ten times in the past week, making sure we knew he was com-ing, fearful that we had for-gotten him or that his job was in jeopardy. I arranged to have his mother bring him to work. I then met them in the park-ing lot and invited them both to celebrate his day back. Stevie was thinner and

paler, but couldn’t stop grinning as he pushed through the doors and head-ed for the back room where his apron and busing cart were waiting. “Hold up there, Stevie, not so fast,” I said. I took him and his mother by their arms. “Work can wait for a minute. To celebrate you coming back, breakfast for you and your mother is on me!” I led them toward a large corner booth at the rear of the room. I could feel and hear the rest of the staff follow-ing behind as we marched through the dining room. Glancing over my shoul-der, I saw booth after booth of grinning truckers empty and join the procession. We stopped in front of the big table. Its surface was covered with coffee cups, saucers and dinner plates, all sitting slightly crooked on dozens of folded paper napkins. “First thing you have to do, Stevie, is clean up this mess,” I said. I tried to sound stern. Stevie looked at me, and then at his mother, then pulled out one of the nap-kins. It had “Something for Stevie” printed on the out-side. As he picked it up, two $10 bills fell onto the table. Stevie stared at the mon-ey, then at all the napkins peeking from beneath the tableware, each with his name printed or scrawled on it. I turned to his mother. “There’s more than $10,000 in cash and checks on that table, all from truckers and trucking companies that heard about your problems. Happy Thanksgiving.” Well, it got real noisy about that time, with every-body hollering and shout-ing, and there were a few tears, as well. But you know what’s funny? While everybody else was busy shaking hands and hugging each other, Stevie, with a big, big smile on his face, was busy clearing all the cups and dishes from the table.... Best worker I ever hired. Plant a seed and watch it grow.

ASK A SPECIALIST: Pucker up this Holiday and Enjoy Citrus Fruits

There is an abundance of citrus fruits in food stores this holiday season. The prime harvest time for most of these fruits is in the late fall and early winter months, which makes the holiday season a peak time for enjoying these healthful foods. Citrus fruits are full of vitamin C, which helps maintain a strong immune system and helps protect against scurvies. Citrus fruits promote heart health and reduce the risk of some chronic diseases. They can also aid in cancer preven-tion and are useful in dia-betes sugar level control. Citrus fruit skin is high in essential oils used in flavor-ings or as fragrant essences in aromatherapy oils, cos-metics and soaps. Other im-portant nutrients found in citrus fruits are fiber, folate, lypocene, potassium, Vita-min B6 and polynutrients. Each fruit color provides different nutrients that our bodies need. It is important to include a variety of col-ors every day for these im-portant nutrients. Consider this information.• Red contains antioxidants that help fight heart disease, cholesterol and some can-cers. • Green provides phyto-chemicals to help protect

eyes and prevent cancerous tumors. Greens have essen-tial vitamins including fo-late, minerals and fiber.• Orange and yellow con-tain beta-carotene that is es-sential for a good immune system and is rich in Vita-min C, folate and Vitamin A. • Blue and purple provide phytochemicals which are antioxidants that protect against cancer and disease. The blue and purple also provide Vitamin C, folic acid and fiber.• White provides allicin, sulfaforaphanes, polyphe-nols and phytochemicals that help in fighting can-cers, lowering blood pres-sure and cholesterol. Citrus fruits are also an object of beauty and decor. A bowl of fresh fruit makes a great centerpiece. It can also remind you that select-ing a piece of fruit rather than candy or cookies is a wise choice. It is smart to keep fresh fruit within reach to encourage daily consumption. The food guide pyramid recommends that you have at least four servings of fruit a day. This may be in the form of juice, fresh, canned or dried fruits. There are many ways to increase fruits in your daily diet. Add oranges and lem-ons to water and allow in-

fusing overnight. Add fresh lemons and limes to drinks. Eat half a grapefruit ev-ery morning for breakfast. Have a citrus snack every day. Prepare salads using citrus fruit with lettuce and spinach. Top entrees with a fruit sauce. As the peak fruit season begins to level off, you may want to try home canning your own grapefruits and oranges. This simple and fast process provides you with home-canned fruit that makes a wonderful break-fast fruit mix and prevents the waste of fruits. Begin by selecting firm, sweet grape-fruits and oranges. Peel and remove the white tissue. Break the fruit into sections and fill jars with the fruit. Next, fill jars with water or hot syrup. Water works well, but a light syrup of 1 cup sugar to 4 cups of water provides an enriched flavor. Pour the liquid over the fruit in the jars, leaving one-half inch headspace. Apply the lids and rings and process pints or quarts in a water bath for 15 minutes for an elevation of 2,000 to 4,000 feet. Adjustments will need to be made for other eleva-tions. Further information can be found in the Blue Ball book or from your county Extension office.

IMMIGRATION PROBLEM? by Arthur Bacon

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Referring to Sheldon Richmond’s libertarian es-say on immigration in the November 17 Insider, the fact of significant immigra-tion into the United States is a very large and impor-tant issue, and in as much as it is usually phrased as a “problem” we all need to be vigilant about age-old tech-niques of fear-mongering, scape-goating, and partisan politicking as solutions to “the problem.” Notwithstanding the fact that when we talk about an immigration “problem”, we are referring largely to emigration from Latin America, mostly Mexico, I would like to say a few things about immigration in general, some of which are not altogether politically correct. The English come to mind as the first to give offense. They are courte-ous, diligent and smart…but that accent! OMG! This is why I don’t like the Eng-lish immigrants. They can come here and just because of that stupid accent they can get a job anywhere. Just listen to the radio and at least once a day you will hear somebody speaking with an English accent with absolute authority about un-derwear, soap, automobiles or foreign policy. Try go-ing to England and getting a job based solely on your American accent. Lol. And then there are some groups of immigrants which are definitely not the nicest people in the world, such as the Russians. I lived in a Russian neighborhood in San Francisco for a year and I can assure you that as a generalization, they have cultivated impoliteness to a high art. It is as though they simply cannot abandon a long history of oppression and suspicion; first, hun-dreds of years under the Czars and then 75 more ter-rifying years under Soviet tyranny. You just want to grab every one of them and shake them and say, “Look pal, you’re in America now; no Gulags here, know what

I’m saying? Its okay to smile and you don’t have to cheat and you don’t have to always be looking behind you, and by the way, you can shake my hand after our game of pool.” The Chinese aren’t al-ways the most affable people on the planet either. How does one learn to be affable when you live in a totalitarian state with a bil-lion other people all trying to get on the same street-car or buy the same loaf of bread? Despite a vener-able and ancient culture the Chinese never discovered the concept of the queue. When opportunities are limited social Darwinism kicks in at every juncture: in stores, at work, in school and on the playground. Ev-ery top math and science student in California last year was Chinese. The Chi-nese probably have a hard time translating the impor-tant American maxim, “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” And talking about an im-migration problem, what about them Kenyans? They come here with a fake birth certificate… and the next thing you know…they are president! Vietnamese immigrants are unique. We bombed them, shot them and na-palmed them and now they love us. Viet Nam is a favorite travel destina-tion and whatever isn’t made in China is made in Viet Nam. San Francisco streets are lined with Viet-namese restaurants and half the doctors and dentists are Vietnamese. I keep wonder-ing what is wrong with the Iraqis and Afghans…just let us bomb and shoot you for a few years and then you too can come to America and go to the University of Cal-ifornia and become doctors and lawyers and have res-taurants on Clement Street. What’s so hard to figure out about that? When I was working con-struction in Syracuse, New York back in the Sixties,

there were still unflattering epithets abounding about the Wops…I mean, the Da-gos…I mean the Italians. I never understood what all the brouhaha was about be-cause I love spaghetti and pizza and my father was always playing Rossini and Verdi. I do know that Ital-ians living here in America are nice compared to the wops in Italy. Go figure. So anyway, back to the Mexicans. I love Mexi-co and Mexican people. I picked fruit in eastern Washington one summer and despite years of ath-leticism I could not keep up with those Mexicans. Later, in California, I often hired Mexicans to do the hard work I was too lazy to do and it was like letting a genie out of a bottle; voila, the job was done! Mexico is the twelfth largest country in the world and their cul-ture is rich with native and Spanish roots. Our econo-my cannot function without them. Period. One thing I love about Mexicans is that they want to come here and be Americans…unlike their Russian and Cuban coun-terparts who are always complaining and dreaming about the old country. I think we should do like the Dutch (Goodle: Neth-erlands immigration video) and give all immigrants a pass-fail examination about America and if they don’t like it, they can go home. We should tell the Russians to smile and stop cheating. We should tell the Chinese to stop pushing to the front of the line; there is enough food for everyone here. We should tell the Brits to speak American for crying out loud. We should tell the Muslims that if they insist on wearing all those robes and masks their kids are never going to be able to play basketball. We should tell the Mexicans to bring along some really good rec-ipes instead of the boring, stupid tacos, rice and beans we always get at Mexican restaurants.

Historically, all peoples (nations) have resisted/de-spised immigrants: Caesar fought the Gauls and the Spaniards hated the Moors. But in both instances, the “invaders” hugely enriched their new countries. Here in America we have expe-rienced several waves of immigrants which have in-spired heated controversy, most notably the Chinese and Italians in the Nine-teenth Century. And we conveniently forget that the early English settlers loathed the Irish no less than the Irish would later loathe the Italians. The xe-nophobic rhetoric always remains the same…. “igno-rant, lazy, jobs, corruption, culture and crime”. I mean, joking aside, no immigrants are gonna be perfect and usually it takes a while for them to fit in, speak the lan-guage and learn how to play baseball, buy a house, get in debt, run for office and make a fortune. Lets face it, we still live in the “land of opportu-nity” and there is no stop-ping “the hordes” from wanting to come and live in the greatest country on earth. And, meanwhile, what about Wayne County and southern Utah? People are kidding themselves if they don’t think that this is one of the most incredible places on the planet. When the secret gets out…well, it has…check out Moab. That is the future. By the way, when Moab was a still a lit-tle mining town in 1950, the world population was three billion. Last month the world population reached 7 billion. Hmmmm. Too bad Kepler 22-b is 600 light years away.
