Editor’s LetterDECEMBER 2013The holiday season is upon us and what a wonderful time of year to be in Wayne. Between the whimsical decorations that dress up the windows of so many local businesses, and the festive embellishments that line the streets and neighborhoods, I would say this is certainly where you want to be in December. I have always felt that Wayne embodied such charm and appeal around the holidays. I still have a child-like spirit that anticipates the indulgence of stepping into one of the many enchanting shops and peering around at all of the unique treasures that dangle so delicately for me to choose from. I am equally giddy at the thought of walking into one of the numerous restaurants and/or bars that create a merry ambiance along with delightful treats and warm cocktails to truly get anyone in the spirit. I am astounded by how hard so many people work in this community to create a unique and memorable holiday experience for everyone to enjoy. After all, isn’t it the people that have the clout to make a great town? Particularly around the holidays. Wayne may not be Bedford Falls, but I certainly think around this time of year we can come darn close to it!

Make sure to kick off the holidays with the very special annual Christmas Tree Lighting event, followed by the Santa parade on December 6th and 7th. Be mindful to support your local businesses while doing your holiday shopping. You will fi nd a fabulous gift guide within this issue to help with ideas for that special person in mind. Take some precious time to really enjoy yourself with friends and family. Most importantly, never ever lose the holiday spirit that resides in each of us. Holding on to the innocence we all had as children and many of us are reminded of during this time of year, is such a sacred and special thing.

Have you ever experienced a time when you walked into someone’s home and you were welcomed by a dog that seemed to create a sense of positive energy in the room? Or maybe you had a bad day and you came home to a dog that showered you with unconditional love and washed away your worries. What is it about these animals that create such affection and happiness day in and day out? These days I come across so many unique dogs in this job, and I fi nd myself smiling more and more.

I remember the fi rst time I walked into Out There Outfi tters, I had a similar feeling. I was immediately drawn to the cutest black lab I had seen in quite some time. She looked incredibly cozy curled up in her bed by the register. I couldn’t refrain from wanting to run my hand along her slick sheen coat. As I approached her, she looked up at me with the most curious eyes and invited me over so she could squish her head between my legs. I believe this was her way of greeting me to the shop. This adorable dog had me at hello.

I soon came to fi nd out her name was Dolly and her owners, Zeke and Tory Sieglaff, let her tag along with them every day to the

store. The 8-year-old lab has one of the most approachable and friendly demeanors, and you can feel it from the moment you walk into the store. She is simply delightful around customers, and loves being around children. She may even help you fi nd the latest Patagonia fl eece or the hippest snow boots to get you through the winter. When at home in Kennett Square, Dolly’s world is a tennis ball. Each evening as soon as Dolly gets home, she dashes to fi nd the tennis ball and eagerly waits for someone to play ball with her. However, if you take her to a dog park, watch out pups! This pooch is just short of a greyhound the way she darts to snatch any other dog’s ball before they even have a fl eeting chance. Although Dolly may come off assertive in the dog park, she is an incredibly submissive dog in every other way. It is said that she will even roll over if a fl y buzzes around her. She doesn’t like to get in trouble and is an avid rule follower. She is much more interested in pleasing the ones she loves. I have now seen fi rst-hand how this special lab has achieved just that.

It’s funny how simple dogs are…just wanting to make others happy. There is so much we can learn from these wondrous animals.

Jay and Kevin McLaughlin were two 20-something brothers living on the Upper East Side of New York City when they decided to open their first clothing store. “We both had a love for classic American clothing and an entrepreneurial spirit,” Jay says. The first J.McLaughlin store opened in 1977. Now, 36 years later, there are over 70 J.McLaughlin locations across the country. “J.McLaughlin established its roots during a great time in New York, when the Upper East Side was a really happening place,” Jay remembers. “Movies like Annie Hall and Kramer vs. Kramer were being filmed there creating a distinct look…we wanted to capitalize on that by taking traditional

designs and giving them a current twist.” As the J.McLaughlin website states, “The resulting look was more about style than fashion: straightforward, unpretentious, devoid of the superfluous. Silhouettes are timeless with a certain sense of the familiar albeit nuanced with a keen attention to fit and detail.” Jay credits hard work and an instinctive conservative approach to business as the formula behind J.McLaughlin’s success. “We started small and we put in long hours,” he says. “We didn’t act as though we were going to conquer the world in a day which I think ultimately made us successful...When you’re starting out with any business you have to

be careful how you do things; you have to keep working and most importantly, you have to enjoy what you do.” After a few years at their location on the Upper East Side, Jay and Kevin began to feel the itch to expand. They moved into a larger storefront up the block and began to plan the future of their brand. They opened a second store and then a third, expanding just about every other year into towns like Princeton, NJ and Westport, CT. “We moved on at a respectable pace,” Jay says, “and we were sure to never compromise our brand. We’ve always enjoyed being retailers. We’ve always had a passion for what we do and a love for the creative aspect of our brand. Those are key ingredients in making a brand special,” he adds. “My advice for anyone looking to start their own business is to just take the risk. Enjoy what you’re doing, stay true to your formula, and just keep going.” In 2011 J.McLaughlin brought its classic American sensibility to the Philadelphia suburbs, opening a location at the Eagle Village Shops in Wayne. It was a welcome addition to the Main Line community. “What brings our clients back is they all love our brand,” says Caroline, store manager. “Our styles are designed to go from day to dinner as well as coast to coast.” With the holiday season in full swing, the friendly

staff enjoys helping customers find the perfect gifts. “It’s the fi rst thing they look for under the tree,” she says. “Our beautiful red and gold stripe signature wrap topped with our red grosgrain ribbon.”

Today, Jay and Kevin are still very much involved in all aspects of the business. “We reached our dream,” Jay says. “But it’s very important that the brand stays true to who we are. We treat it just like we did 36 years ago - with a lot of enthusiasm and care.”

Wayne’s Old Fashioned Christmas CelebrationThe Most Anticipated Holiday Event of the Yearby Diane Jiorle

The Wayne Business Association presents the Wayne Hotel’s Old Fashioned Christmas Celebration! You’re fun weekend starts Friday, Dec 6th with The Wayne Old Fashioned Christmas Tree Lighting Celebration. Saturday, December 7th brings the Santa Parade. Launching the holiday season with these events has been a Wayne tradition for over 20 years.

Magical horse-drawn carriage rides bring you back to a Dicken’s Christmas wonderland Friday night on S. Wayne Ave at 5:30 PM. A magician’s tricks will put a smile on your face before the ride. The South Wayne Victorian homes are beautifully decorated for the season. Lighted luminaries along the route add to the ambiance of this magical ride. The

carriage rides are my favorite way to start the Christmas season. The trot of the horse’s relaxed pace brings a peaceful feeling on the old fashioned horse drawn carriages. Some of the most beautiful homes of the Main Line add to the enchantment of the ride with bright holiday décorations. It is a tradition I look forward to every year.

Friday night, more activities at the Radnor Firehouse on S. Wayne Ave. will keep your children busy before the Tree Lighting. They can design their own original ornaments to take home and hang on the tree. Ever popular face painting will be part of the festivities at the fi rehouse. Christmas carols fi ll the air as Valley Forge Military Academy & College Choir, community groups, Radnor Cheerleaders and the Girl

Scouts will serenade you. Sing along if you like. A Christmas Carol theme is continued with a toy soldier available for photos with you and your kids.

The evening’s events lead up to the highly anticipated Wayne Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, at 7:30 by the Wayne train station on N. Wayne Avenue. Wayne’s very own Vernon Odem, the 6ABC Action News reporter, will lead the community in the exciting count down. The energy from the crowd is amazing. The entire intersection is fi lled with kids of all ages counting down the numbers and cheering together when the bright tree lights go on. Then the crowd joins in singing Christmas carols. Everyone is so excited—people love it.

Saturday morning Santa offi cially comes to Wayne. Santa’s parade begins at 10 AM on Lancaster Ave near Aberdeen Ave. Radnor High School Marching Band, Cheerleaders and Valley Forge Military

Academy Field Music Group march with Santa down Lancaster Ave to The Wayne Hotel. Children can share their wish list with Santa and have their pictures taken on the veranda of The Wayne Hotel until Noon. “Paramour will serve complimentary house-made hot chocolate and fresh cookies to all who attend. A Marine soldier will be present collecting Toys for Tots,” says David Brennan, General Manager of the Hotel.

Please bring an unwrapped gift for Toys for Tots on Saturday. That is the only donation requested for all of this holiday entertainment. The drop box will be available through mid-December at the Wayne Hotel.

How Not to Survive the Holidaysby Emi Kirschner

Ready or not, the holidays are here, and whether you haven’t thought too much about it or have everything nailed down, at some point or other most of us feel a little stressed out about getting it all done. All the chaos, shopping, decorating, parties, friends, family, travel and - all that food, it’s a lot. I’ve seen a bunch of “Stress-Free Holiday Survival” newsletters fl oating around in email space, and to me, just surviving isn’t what the holiday season is all about.

How do we fi t it all in? The answer: Don’t.

I’m a big believer that if you aren’t enjoying what you are doing then you shouldn’t do it. And I’m not saying not to pay your bills or do laundry… necessary things still need to happen. But what if you entered the holidays feeling energized and looking forward to all the hub-bub? What if you weren’t concerned about gaining weight or managing your time between sending out holiday cards and trying to attend three parties in one night?

I’d like to suggest one thing: Shift Your Thinking.

You get to decide how you want to spend your time and what you eat. It’s your time and your life, so decide how you want your time to look, what will make you feel most fulfi lled and how important your long term health goals are.

I’m not suggesting that a strict routine be kept or that anyone deprive themselves of a cherished indulgence. The key here is to choose what is really worth indulging in.Everyone is different, so set some priorities.Decide what events, traditions, etc. are important and focus on those. Every year right around Thanksgiving we decide what traditions we want to repeat and what new things we want to include, what we want to make time for and who we want to see. We also talk about what things we want to let go of, like is decorating every square inch of the house necessary or will a few outside lights do the trick?

Just don’t forget to make some time for yourself. Keep some quiet time to recharge for you. Your enjoyment level will increase signifi cantly.

Emi’s background as a personal chef and catering/event planner gives a unique perspective of food. Her philosophy is that healthy food can taste amazing and can fi t into anyone’s busy life.

As for navigating all the goodies that seem to be so plentiful this time of year, a few suggestions:

• Eat something healthy before going to parties or events and please don’t starve yourself all day thinking that will offset the extra calories you eat when you’re out. Your body doesn’t work that way. Not being overly hungry when you’re at a party will help you from overeating in those settings where it’s usually more challenging to make healthy choices.

• Keep moving. Being consistent with your exercise routine will help you de-stress and boost your energy levels.

• The holidays aren’t the holidays without some super delicious treats. I’m going to presume we all know that scarfi ng down the whole cheesecake isn’t the best idea. Be mindful of what you choose to enjoy and really take the time to enjoy it. Savor every bite. Think about what, how much and how often indulging in that special treat is going to make you feel and how it will affect your longer term health goals.

And a few facts, just for good measure:It takes an extra 500 calories each day, or 3,500 calories a week, to gain a pound. That sounds like a lot, but when you look at the below, extra calories add up quickly:

• One cup of eggnog – without added liquor – has about 350 calories and 19 grams of fat.

• One cup of champagne has about 182 calories.

• One 4 oz. serving of red wine has about 100 calories.

• 4 21⁄4” homemade chocolate chip cookies, 320 calories

• (3) 3” homemade frosted sugar cookies, 330 calories

• 1⁄8 slice of 9” homemade apple pie, 410 calories

Since our last contact with the Wayward Traveler, his quest for the holy grail, The Quintessential Cocktail, has in no way diminished. It continues albeit under different circumstances. Having survived his last encounter with the elusive cocktail he has again reviewed his situation and readily acknowledges that he is indeed up for the challenge.

As our man ambles around Wayne he becomes enamored with the lovely decorations that permeate the neighborhoods in preparation for the festive Christmas Season. Lights sparkle on sidewalks and streets. Shops display their holiday wares. People of all ages stroll through the downtown Wayne area with good neighborly cheer and greeting one another with well meaning tidings of the season while portraying a lovely camaraderie as they shop and purchase gifts for their friends and families. It does not take long for our old codger to become imbued with this wonderful spirit. However, while being overcome with this aura of well being his bones and body begin to react to the chill in the air. He suddenly realizes that he must seek out a place that will provide warmth and ambience to not only dispel the chill in his bones, but more importantly to instill the spirit of the season within himself.As he meanders aimlessly contemplating

his next move he suddenly comes upon an establishment that from all outward signs is a place which can provide him with tonic which he so desperately needs. The White Dog Café appears in his path with a door open and as welcoming as none other during this most lonely time of year for a Wayward Traveler far from his original surroundings. In no time at all our man is snuggled at the bar in his customary seat in the corner. He orders the famous Dirty Dog Martini which immediately warms the sinews in his old bones. Before long he has introduced himself to others at the bar. In his usual good spirited manner he offers to buy everyone at the bar a drink, and goes with a round of the Seasonal Sparklers concocted with sparkling white wine, St. Germaine and seasonal fruit puree. Undoubtedly this friendly gesture has a quick result in bringing his new found friends into a more jovial spirit and awareness of the special feeling of the season. He explains to the gathering crowd, who by now had all toasted his well-being, that his presence in the town of Wayne is necessitated by his pursuit of the perfect cocktail. At once, a voice at the other end of the bar acknowledges this statement by exclaiming that our man is indeed the Wayward Traveler because his notoriety has appeared in Wayne’s newest and most popular publication, Wayne Magazine.

As the drinks are consumed with alacrity and stories of the holidays are told, it becomes apparent to all that the holidays are a time of giving to one another and for all of us to share this special period with family and friends. The Codger receives this empathic feeling with great appreciation as he downs one more Dirty Dog martini filled with handmade vodka, pickle brine and house-made pickles. Slowly a feeling of loneliness begins to engross his being as many of his new found friends leave the White Dog in order to go to their homes, leaving our man to his own devices at the bar. He orders eggnog filled with spirits of the season, but as he does so he becomes impacted with the fact that while his quest for the Quintessential Cocktail is indeed what presently consumes him, it is not the most important challenge at this time of year. He becomes nostalgic remembering his early years of upbringing. His heart becomes warm as he recalls his mother’s apple pie and turkey dinners fixed with all

the trimmings. The loving memories of the family gathered around the Christmas tree singing carols and exchanging gifts. He suddenly realizes that he is alone far from home. The people in Wayne who he has befriended, all upstanding citizens, are now with their families, a place where he too belongs.

The Old Man now realizing the difference in what is truly important throws back his last cocktail and announces to the only person left at the bar, the bartender, that he too will recognize and celebrate the spirit of Christmas. Our traveler immediately returns to his family and friends in New York. His quest for the grail will temporarily be put on hold while he attends to more important matters.
