LOOKING AT THE GREEN WAVETulane faces a quick turn-around as it comes to Starkville for Sunday’s game fresh off a 61-52 road win against Louisiana Tech Friday night. The win improved the Green Wave to 6-1 this season.

Tulane is scoring 63 points per game and out-rebounding the opposi-tion by nearly fi ve rebounds per game. The Green Wave are shooting 38.6-percent from the fi eld, including a solid 34.7-percent clip from be-yond the arc.

Olivia Grayson leads Tulane with a 12.6 ppg scoring average. She also tops the squad in assists (4.4 per game) and steals (2.9 per game). Brett Benzio is coming off a double-double against the Lady Techsters, and she paces the squad with 9.9 rebounds per game and 2.1 blocked shots an outing. Benzio is also scoring 9.9 points per game this season.

FANNING-OTIS COLLECTS MILESTONEMississippi State head coach Sharon Fanning-Otis added another mile-stone to her impressive coaching resume with Wednesday night’s win against South Alabama. The victory gave MSU’s 17th-year head coach the 600th victory of her career in her 36th season coaching.

Fanning-Otis, who had stops at Chattanooga and Kentucky before land-ing in Starkville, owns a 600-445 career record (.574). She is the all-time wins leader in Lady Bulldog basketball history with a 273-217 record.

Fanning-Otis became the 14th active NCAA Division I coach to reach the 600-win plateau.

HOT-SHOOTING DIAMBERSenior Diamber Johnson had her 13-game double-fi gure scoring streak halted against Savannah State, but she picked up the pace again on Wednesday, netting a game-high 22 against South Alabama.

The Pontotoc, Miss., native’s 22-point effort moved her back atop the SEC scoring leaders list with a 17.0 per-game average. Johnson opened the year with a career-best 30 points against Jacksonville State, the most points by an MSU player in the season opener since 2000-01 when LaToya Thomas notched 48 at Memphis.

Johnson sits 269 points away from 1,000. She needs to average around 12.2 ppg over the fi nal 22 games of the regular season to reach the mark.

Johnson was also stellar from the charity stripe on Wednesday, hitting a career-best nine of her 10 attempts. Johnson is shooting 74-percent for the season (37-for-50) and 75.9-percent for her career, a tally that rates fi fth in MSU career annals.

JOHNSON WITH THE ASSISTJohnson has not only been leading the Lady Bulldogs in scoring, but she has also paced the team in assists. After dishing out three assists versus South Alabama, Johnson now has 270 for her career, 23 out of 10th place all-time.

DEFENSE... DEFENSEPart of the reason for State’s 6-1 start to the season has been a stellar ef-fort on the defensive end of the fl oor. MSU has held an opponent to four or fewer fi eld goals in a half on four occasions this season. At home this year, foes are shooting just 28.5-percent from the fi eld.

The Lady Bulldogs have been even more impressive defensively in the last three games. Fanning-Otis’ squad held South Alabama to its lowest fi rst-half percentage of the season (14.7-percent) en route to a 21.5-per-cent total.

Mississippi Valley State, Savannah State and USA combined to shoot just 22-percent from the fl oor. Those teams hit 18.4-percent of their second-half shots and 25.6-percent in the opening 20 minutes.

MISSISSIPPI STATE LADY BULLDOG BASKETBALL • 2011-12 Game 8 - Tulane

ALWAL OFF TO STELLAR STARTFreshman Martha Alwal has enjoyed a stellar rookie cam-paign, including seven points and eight rebounds against South Alabama. The Worthington, Minn., native rates sec-ond in the SEC with 10.3 rebounds per game. She is also av-eraging an SEC-best 3.9 blocks per game, and she entered the week ranked third nationally in the category.

Alwal’s 27 blocked shots are tied for fi fth-most by a fresh-man, fi ve back of the school record (32) set by former All-America LaToya Thomas during the 1999-2000 season.

Alwal has also tallied three double-doubles in her fi rst seven games. Against Mississippi Valley State, she fi nished two blocks shy of a triple-double as she swatted eight shots to go along with 12 rebounds and a season-high 17 points.

That effort came less than a week after she set an MSU freshman record with 22 rebounds against Alcorn State. It bettered the previous best of 20 set by Sandra Butler against Alcorn State (2/28/83) and LSU (1/24/83), and tied LaToya Thomas for fi fth-highest in MSU single-game history (vs. Montana on Dec. 16, 2001).

Ten of her boards came on offense against ASU, the fi rst time an MSU player has grabbed 10 or more offensive re-bounds in a game since Sophie Ratliff pulled in 12 en route to a school-record 26 total boards vs. Shorter College (Feb. 15, 1988).

Alwal had 14 points and 11 rebounds in a Nov. 14 win against Xavier, hours after being named SEC Freshman of the Week for an 11-rebound, 10-block debut against Jack-sonville State on Nov. 11.

Alwal’s 10 swats against the Gamecocks set a new sin-gle-game school record, passing Chanel Mokango’s nine against Ole Miss on Jan. 11, 2009. Alwal became the fi rst Lady Bulldog freshman since Robin Porter (2006) to register a double-double. The last time a Lady Bulldog opened the year with back-to-back double-doubles was Sharon Thomp-son in 1997-98.

LADY BULLDOG BLOCK PARTYAlwal’s 10 blocks against Jacksonville State led a block party for Mississippi State in the contest. The Lady Bulldogs swat-ted a school-record 14 shots, bettering the previous best of 13 set by the 2006 squad against Mississippi Valley State.

BETT COMING ON STRONGAfter averaging 4.8 points and 2.5 rebounds per game through the fi rst four games of her senior season, Catina Bett has begun to come on strong over the fi nal three games.

After scoring a season-high 11 points and pulling in eight rebounds Wednesday night, Bett has averaged 8.3 points and six rebounds while blocking seven shots over her last three outings.

Johnson had 14 fi rst-half points and three assists on 5-of-9 shooting from the fi eld.

Thanks to 41.2 shooting on the offensive end, the Maroon and White eased into a 36-18 advantage at halftime.

An Ashley Brown layup capped a 9-0 run for the Lady Bulldogs over the fi rst two minutes of the second half. The lead pushed past 30 points on a 3-point basket by Shamia Robinson. Robinson’s tray capped another 9-0 run and ran the advantage to 59-28 with 12:28 left in regulation.

The lead grew to as many as 38 in the closing minutes.

For the contest, the Lady Bulldogs hit 31 of 72 shots from the fi eld (43.1 percent), 5 of 18 shots from 3-point range (27.8 percent) and 17 of 30 shots from the foul line (56.7 percent). Mississippi State overcame a sluggish start to post a 66-48 victory over Alcorn State in a women’s basketball game played Thursday night at Humphrey Coliseum.

The Lady Bulldogs shot 29.4 percent in the opening half and only led 24-15 at the break. The lead was still only seven points midway through the fi nal half before a game-deciding 13-3 run.

Senior Diamber Johnson paced the Lady Bulldogs with 14 points, her 11th-straight game in double fi gures going back to the 2010-11 season. She was one of three MSU players in double digits, as Porsha Porter and Kendra Grant tallied 13 and 11, respectively.

Freshman Martha Alwal fi nished one point shy of her third-straight double-double as she paced the MSU defense with 22 rebounds, a mark that tied LaToya Thomas for fi fth-most in a game. Still, the Lady Bulldogs were rarely threatened in the game’s fi nal 20 minutes.A 3-point basket by Grant – one of fi ve by MSU in the contest – placed the hosts on top, 33-19 with 15:35 left in regulation. From there, Alcorn State responded with an 11-4 run to climb back within, 37-30.

A 13-3 run by the Lady Bulldogs moved the lead back out to 50-33 with 7:32 left in regula-tion. A 3-point basket by Porter capped the monster run.

For the contest, the Lady Bulldogs hit 26 of 67 shots from the fi eld (38.8 percent), 5 of 16 shots from 3-point range (31.3 percent) and 9 of 20 shots from the foul line (45.0 percent). The Lady Braves hit 18 of 55 shots from the fi eld (32.7 percent), 2 of 8 shots from 3-point range (25.0 percent) and 10 of 21 shots from the foul line (47.6 percent).

Mississippi State parlayed a brilliant defensive effort and a career-high 18 points from Ashley Brown into a 56-42 victory over Savannah State Saturday afternoon at Tiger Arena.

The Lady Bulldogs (5-1) only allowed three second-half fi eld goals. MSU was nursing a 26-25 lead at halftime. Savannah State (3-2) did not convert its fi rst fi eld goal of the fi nal half until 7:26 remained in the contest.

Brown went 7-for-9 from the fi eld and 4-for-5 from the free-throw line as she bettered her pre-vious personal-best of 17 set last season against North Texas. Brown came one rebound shy of a double-double as she pulled in nine boards, including six on the offensive glass.

For Fanning-Otis, this was career win No. 599. Fanning-Otis is now 599-445 in 35 seasons of coaching Division I basketball. With one more victory, she will become the 14th active coach in Division I women’s basketball with 600 or more victories.

The teams played a nip-and-tuck fi rst half. Neither team led by more than six points in that half, while the lead changed hands on three different occasions. An 8-0 run over the fi rst four minutes of play lifted the Maroon and White to an 8-2 advantage. The run was capped by a 3-point basket from Kendra Grant. The lead still remained at four before Savannah State reeled off a 7-0 run of its own.

A 3-point play by Jasmine Kirkland gave Savannah State a 13-12 lead, and the Lady Tigers ran the lead to three as MSU went more than seven minutes between baskets before Ashley Brown hit a layup to break the draught. A 3-point basket by Porter put the Lady Bulldogs up four before they eased into halftime with a 26-25 lead.

In the fi nal half, Savannah State hit only 3-of-21 second-half shots and committed six of their 10 turnovers. A 12-1 run allowed MSU to sprint out to a 38-26 advantage with 16:37 left in the contest. The lead stayed in the double fi gures range before Gaynor ran it to 14 on an old-fashioned 3-point play. The free throw make meant MSU led 45-31 with 10:19 left.

MSU would build the lead to 15 on two different occasions before posting the victory.

For the contest, the Lady Bulldogs hit 19 of 51 shots from the fi eld (37.3 percent), 4 of 18 shots from 3-point range (22.2 percent) and 14 of 18 shots from the foul line (77.8 percent). The Lady Tigers hit 12 of 48 shots from the fi eld (25.0 percent), 2 of 12 shots from 3-point range (16.7 percent) and 16 of 28 shots from the foul line (57.1 percent).

MSU held a 43-31 rebounding advantage. The Lady Bulldogs had eight assists and 13 turn-overs, while the Lady Tigers had two assists and 10 turnovers.

In addition to Brown’s career-high 18, Diamber Johnson, Porter, Grant and Gaynor each add-ed eight points. Johnson had a team-high three assists, while Bett blocked four shots.

Mississippi State women’s basketball coach Sharon Fanning-Otis joined some elite company Wednesday night. Fanning-Otis recorded career victory No. 600 as the Lady Bulldogs won their third straight with a 63-47 victory over South Alabama at Humphrey Coliseum.

Fanning-Otis becomes one of 14 active Division I coaches with 600 or more victories. A former head coach at both the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga and the University of Kentucky, Fanning-Otis is now 600-445 in her 36 seasons as a Division I head coach.

In her 17th season at MSU, Fanning-Otis has posted a 273-217 record. Fanning-Otis has led the Lady Bulldogs to 11 postseason appearances, including the only six NCAA appearances in the program’s history.

The Lady Bulldogs (6-1) were rarely threatened after erasing an early 7-2 defi cit. MSU scored the game’s next 19 points, while holding South Alabama (5-2) scoreless for 9 minutes, 26 seconds.

The Lady Bulldogs shot only hit 1-of-11 3-point shots in the opening half but did shoot 40 percent overall, while building a 29-17 halftime advantage. Defensively, MSU held South Ala-bama to 14.7 percent shooting in the opening half, as the Lady Jaguars at one time missed 13 straight shots and fi nished 5-of-34 for the half.

South Alabama closed within 36-30 on a 3-point basket by Jennifer Johnson with 14:19 left in regulation. The hosts tacked on the next six points to reestablish a 42-30 lead with 11:34 left.

The lead would grow to 14 before South Alabama took advantage of heavy foul trouble on MSU to close within eight on two different occasions. Strong free throw shooting and a reemerged inside presence allowed the Maroon and White to close out a third straight win against the Lady Jaguars.

For the contest, the Lady Bulldogs hit 23 of 52 shots from the fi eld (44.2 percent), 2 of 13 shots from 3-point range (15.4 percent) and 15 of 22 shots from the foul line (68.2 percent). The Lady Jaguars hit 14 of 65 shots from the fi eld (21.5 percent), 4 of 26 shots from 3-point range (15.4 percent) and 15 of 24 shots from the foul line (62.5 percent).

MSU held a 46-40 rebounding advantage. The Lady Bulldogs had fi ve assists and 17 turn-overs, while the Lady Jaguars had seven assists and 13 turnovers.

Johnson paced the Lady Bulldogs with 22 points, while Porsha Porter and Catina Bett each added 11 points. Porter and Bett were both slowed by foul trouble with each player fi nishing with four fouls. Bett had a team-high eight rebounds and three blocked shots, while Johnson had three assists.

South Alabama received 16 points from Mansa El and 13 points from Sarda Peterson.
