To all Work-Based Learning Students:

Congratulations! You have been selected to participate in the Gordon County School System Work-Based Learning Program. It is the beginning of an exciting and rewarding experience as part of your career pathway and workforce experience. Ideally, your job placement will be connected to at least one CTAE course you have taken or are currently enrolled in.

Through participation in Work-Based Learning, classroom learning is combined with work experience. Along the way you will be expected to meet certain standards and assigned criteria. Knowing what is expected of you at school and during your worksite experience will help you to succeed, so take the time to read the following pages carefully. You will be expected to complete assignments and participate in activities like mock interviews and ongoing conversations with your Work-Based Learning Coordinator.

With the honor of being released from school to work on a related job site comes a responsibility involving career commitment and continued effort on your part. The fact that you have been selected shows that you are willing to strive for success and build a foundation for your future career. You are also expected to act as a representative of Sonoraville High School at all times. Participation in this program means you are held to a higher standard of excellence by the school and your employer.

Best wishes as you begin on the new venture. I wish you success and pledge my support in this endeavor.

Warmest regards,

Andrea Walraven, Ed.DSonoraville High School

STUDENT EXPECTATIONS

Work-Based Learning students are expected to excel in three major areas: academic performance, school and workplace behavior, and job performance.

As a WBL student, you must maintain a C average at school and have a 90% attendance record. You may take advantage of many support services to help you achieve these goals, but you have to do the work! Failure to meet either of these goals can result in termination from the program and possible loss of credit for the course.

Participation in this program means that your work site is an extension of the school program. Think of your job site as a remote lab environment. To participate in WBL, you must demonstrate acceptable behavior at school and at the worksite. You are expected to follow the standards of behavior of your local school system as well as those of the employer.

ATTENDANCE POLICY

The WBL experience is designed to instill the importance of positive work habits and attitudes both on the job and in the classroom. You must assume responsibility for regular attendance at your school and your worksite on the assigned day.

Remember, if you do not attend your high school classes you cannot report to the job site except by special permission.

YOUR ATTENDANCE WILL AFFECT YOUR ELIGIBILITY FOR CREDIT.It is also important in your evaluation by both your mentor and teacher.

You must go to work every day that you are required to be in attendance. You are an employee of the business and your mentor depends on you to be at work every day. Your mentor assigns you important work every day and if you are absent then that work is not completed. YOU ARE AN EMPLOYEE OF THE BUSINESS PARTNER and you must follow the same rules as other employees.

If you are sick and cannot attend school/work, you MUST call or text your mentor and WBL coordinator BEFORE you are scheduled to begin school/work that day.

If you know you will be unable to attend work in advance, for example, you must take a test at school, let your mentor and WBL coordinator know well in advance why you are going to be absent and the days you will be absent.

I strongly encourage you to schedule all doctor and dentist appointments outside of your work hours; however, should you have an appointment, let your mentor know PRIOR to the day of the appointment.

If you are absent due to a death in the family, you must call or have someone else call your mentor and instructor. Unexpected absences are considered to be evidence of undesirable work behavior and are STRONGLY

discouraged. No show to work, without a phone call and/or prior approval:

o First Offense -Written Warningo Second Offense -Discipline Referralo Third Offense – Possible removal from the program

Attendance ProceduresNON-DISCRIMINATION POLICY: It is the policy of the School Boards participating in the Youth Apprenticeship Program to offer the opportunity to students to participate in appropriate programs and activities without regard to color, creed, national origin (Title VI of the 1972 Educational Amendments), handicap (Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and PL94-142) or sex (Title II of the Educational Amendments of 1976 and PL194-482).

It is imperative that you understand communication is crucial in your success in the WBL Program. You absolutely cannot attend one without attending the other in terms of school and work. If you do not attend school, you cannot attend work. Your WBL Coordinator will check your attendance regularly.

1. All absences must be approved by both the WBL Coordinator and your Work Supervisor.2. You must contact the WBL Coordinator and your Supervisor prior to your known absence as

well as the morning of your absence.3. You must complete the absence form attached to your time sheet for all absences including

fieldtrips and college visits. If you aren’t at school, you need an absence form documenting.4. Each day you are required to check in or out using the WBL tab in the office. DO NOT use this

method if you are not going or returning from your WBL placement. For example, if you are going to the doctor instead of work you will need to check in as tardy or check out as leaving early instead of WBL.

5. If you have WBL in the morning and you do not attend school, you must check out of school in person with a valid reason. Attendance is counted during school and work.

I am absent:

Work-Based Learning Sonoraville High School

Dear Parent/Guardian:

I am delighted your son/daughter has enrolled in the Work-Based Learning Program for the Gordon County School System. I believe you will find the experiences your son/daughter has this year in the classroom and at the job site will be beneficial to him or her for the rest of his/her life. The purpose of the program is to provide students the opportunity to connect what they learn in school with work-site application in order to enable a smooth transition into the work force and/or postsecondary education after graduation from high school.

As a member of the program, your son/daughter will be leaving school early in order to go to work or either coming in after first block in the morning. He/she will receive one unit of credit for each class release period for the program in each semester enrolled.

The program demands a lot of responsibility on the part of your son/daughter in arriving daily safely to the worksite and also keeping up with their notebook/portfolio. It is the student’s responsibility to be in class every day and to be in attendance at the worksite daily. The student is responsible for following the school’s attendance policy. He/she may have no more than five absences per semester. If he/she is absent more than five days in the semester from school/worksite, then he/she must provide documentation for absences for the program before credit may be granted.

Your child has received a copy of the Work-Based Learning Parent Orientation PowerPoint. Please review the document and sign, to indicate your permission for your child to participate in the program.

I look forward to a successful year working with your son/daughter. If you have any questions concerning the program, please don’t hesitate to call.

Sincerely,

Andrea Walraven, Ed.DSonoraville High SchoolWork Based Learning [email protected]

CAREER RELATED EDUCATION PROGRAM COURSE SYLLABUS cont.

To ParentsYou can check your son/daughter’s progress on Infinite Campus. If you do not have a code, please see someone in the Counselor’s office to assist you. Progress reports are available every 4 1/2 weeks. If you have any questions, feel free to contact the instructor.

Program Rules Secure a work permit before reporting to a part-time paid job/internship and complete all necessary documentation

paperwork. Be regular in attendance at school and on the job. Excessive absences and/or tardies will affect your final grade and will

require written documentation. Go to work only when attending class at school. The student must be counted present for school that day in order to go

to the worksite. Obtain the coordinator's permission prior to terminating a job or internship experience. Remain under coordinator's supervision during class periods designed for work whenever unemployed. Report immediately to the coordinator any job termination/job problem. Not entertain personal visitors while on the job or use the phone unless necessary for an emergency situation, and then

will ask permission from my supervisor. Risk being dropped automatically from the program because of incompetence or negligence on the job and receive a

grade of 50 for that grading period. Learn to ask questions at place of employment and during the related class or instruction when you do not understand

certain instructions and procedures related to on-the-job training. Bring in check stubs and/or weekly wage reports to verify work hours and rate of pay. If in a non-paid internship

placement, students will need to complete attendance reports. Keep all forms, reports and assignments up-to-date and turned in on time or as directed by the coordinator. Strive to maintain passing grades in all school subjects never using the Career Related Education program as an

excuse for obtaining special privileges or as an excuse for not getting work done or serving detentions for other teachers.

Be evaluated during each grading period on my skills, knowledge, traits, attitudes, and attendance, at school and on the job.

Notify employer via text message, phone or email by 8:00 a.m. if you are going to be absent from work. Schedule time off for special events related to school several days in advance

Provide own reliable transportation to and from work. Parents or guardians will assume the responsibility for a student’s safety and conduct from the time he/she leaves school until he/she reports to the job; likewise, from the time leaving the job until arriving home.

Be attentive and cooperative in class and on the job, accepting any guidance and counseling cheerfully. Leave campus upon completion of the regular school day unless I have permission for official school business from a

teacher. If caught on campus, discipline procedures may be administered. Learn and abide by the rules and regulations established by the employer. Respond to all electronic communication (text, voice message, email) in a timely manner, preferably within 1 hour. Attend Future Fest (fall Semester) and/or Rising Professionals (Spring Semester).

Dear Employer:

On behalf of the Career Related Education Work-Based Learning Programs in Gordon County, I would like to thank you for your willingness to employ and evaluate our working students.

At the beginning of school, there are a number of forms that the school must have on file for these students since they are receiving the same unit of credit for this course as English, Math, etc. Each student will need to have this letter, an early release understanding/insurance verification form, a training agreement, and an initial training plan signed and on file. These forms will require your signature.

The training agreement explains what is expected of all parties involved in this program and the training plan identifies tasks that the student is now performing or learning on the job.

In the past, we have had a slight problem with excessive absences from school with some students. We realize this is not your concern; however, we would like to solicit your help to remedy this problem. A student who is absent from school for the day is not allowed to participate on the job for that day. If a student is absent, I may call you to confirm whether or not the student reports to work.

If the student has reported to work, the school will deal with the situation according to the program policies. We have informed the students that it is their responsibility to adhere to this policy and we appreciate your cooperation in this matter. Hopefully, working together, these students will become more productive and dependable employees and citizens of the community.

Each grading period, the student or Work-based Learning Coordinator will bring a job evaluation form to you to be completed. You should be able to fill it out in approximately five minutes. Your comments about the student-employee are always important.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation. I hope you will find that students in the Gordon County Career Related Education Work-Based Learning Programs do an excellent job for you. Please feel free to call if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Andrea Walraven, Ed.DSonoraville High SchoolWork-Based Learning [email protected]
