Dear Alumni and Friends,

I am happy to provide each of you with Wilmington College’s 2020-21 Annual Report. I hope you find this publication both informative and inspirational as we share key accomplishments against the backdrop of our sesquicentennial (150th) year.

I am blessed and honored to serve you as the College’s 19th president and my family and I and are excited about the future here! I’ve gained some keen insights and had some great experiences that reinforce why Wilmington College is such a special place.

I appreciate having met some of you virtually in my affinity group conversations as well as those I’ve met in person. I look forward to hearing more of your stories to learn about how WC continues to resonate in your lives.

2021 Philanthropists-of-the-YearBob & Sharon Touchton

When Robert E. "Bob" Touchton, Class of '65, retired as a judge with the Social Security Administration in 2005, he mentioned to his wife, Sharon, they should find a new house a bit closer to Wilmington. They settled on Maineville in northeastern Cincinnati, which would allow for an easy drive to Bob's alma mater since he was a member of the Alumni Council and planned to take in the occasional Quakers basketball game.

Little did Bob know then that he would be making that drive on a regular basis, sometimes daily, for years. Indeed, he quickly became a fixture on campus and checked all three boxes of an extraordinarily engaged alumnus, which include offering the gifts of (1) time, (2) talent and (3) treasure.

The College asked Bob to join the Board of Trustees from which he took a hiatus to serve for 18 months as interim vice president for advancement. Meanwhile, Bob called upon his legal knowledge and business savvy in teaching a popular business law course for many years as an adjunct faculty member. He returned to the Board in 2009 and continued as a member, including several years as chair, through 2018.

All this time, Bob frequently attended basketball games — in fact, he scheduled his business law classes on Wednesdays to coincide with home contests. He and Sharon also have regularly attended WC Theatre shows, enjoying them so much they've frequently brought groups of WC friends and members of their church to Wilmington for dinner and a show. The couple also has been consistent donors for the past 35 years. They have seen the significance of supporting specific projects and campaigns while also always supporting the Annual Fund.

Bob has spoken many times at the New Student Convocation urging the freshmen and transfer students to embrace their Wilmington College experience as life-transforming. When he spoke representing the alumni community at Commencement, new graduates heard a similar message of how their time at WC would resonate throughout their lives. He's also appealed many times in gatherings of fellow alumni to support their alma mater as they hearken memories of their time at WC: "We can all point to two or three faculty or staff members and several friends from Wilmington College that have made a difference in our lives, persons that spurred us on, inspired us and helped make us what we are today."

2020-2021 Sam Marble Society InducteesSam Marble, President of Wilmington College (1947-1959), was a visionary leader. It was his foresight that allowed for the construction of Marble Hall largely with student labor. The legacy that Sam Marble created has served as a solid foundation for College growth and as a model of involvement and service for generations of students, faculty, and administrators. We honor his foresight and vision with the naming of our most important philanthropic society, The Sam Marble Society. This society recognizes those individuals who have made the choice to remember Wilmington College with a gift from their estate, retirement plan or by creating an endowed fund at the College. Like Sam Marble’s vision all those years ago, these individuals are creating the foundation for Wilmington College’s future.
