Women’s Christian
Temperance Union
and The National
American Woman
Suffrage Association
How It started for the WCTU
In 1879, Frances Willard was the new president of the Women’s
Christian Temperance Union. The women’s christian temperance
was organized to deal with issues with their homes and families.
The women deal with politics. They touch on topics that deal
with women suffrage.
Women Voting rights
Wyoming state allowed women to vote in national elections in
1890. They were the only state that did allow women to vote.
Lots of women were glad that the WCTU started because they
felt particularly vulnerable to the effects of drunkenness.
Problems in the home
Women needed a name for themselves, feel more important,
independent and not always depend on a man. Women suffered a
lot, as well as their children when alcoholism came about. A man
would spend money, time drinking instead of taken care of
household. The women needed to take a stand and not be second-
class citizens. The group WCTU was just for women. Women
took action against society and work on putting a stop to
alcoholism. Alcoholism is a when a person has a problem
drinking, excessively. Some men at that time were uncontrollable
drinkers.
Women work ethic
The WCTU also joined the Knights of Labor to help women get
better working conditions. A lot of beauty saloon began to open
giving the women less harsh work. In 1884, Willard argued that
women needed to vote to protect home and their families. From
the 1890s to the early 1900s, the WCTU had accomplished some
good such as women being evolved in the political action, women
speaking, lobbying, drafting legislations, running and organizing
charitable institutions. Also the WCTU had over 200,000
members, that number was small and still so much more work to
do.
National American Woman
Suffrage Association
In 1890, the women National American Suffrage Association
came about to continue the fight. Women were able to vote in
four states like Wyoming, Colorado, Idaho, and Utah by 1896.
Women who launched NAWSAElizabeth Cady Stanton was a American activist born on November 12, 1815. She help
lead women’s right movement and also wrote the Declaration of Sentiments as a call to
arms for female equality. Susan B. Anthony born in February 15, 1820 was an
American social reformer. Together they launch the National Woman Suffrage
Association in 1869. They fought for women to be able to vote in more states. The
fourteenth and fifteenth amendment granted voting rights to African American males
but not to women of any race. The AWSA thought that women and men should be able
to vote local but national. The NAWSA fought for twenty years for women the right to
vote national. By 1920, all women were able to vote national.
Conclusion I think that the WCTU were more effective in resolving issues,
problems by trying to help solve problems at home. If the men
have a problem at home, solve that first, then that will show a
change on society. Focusing on the problems and trying to fix
first. They made more opportunities open up for women when
they took a stand to make a change and show how important
women and children are in a household. Start changing problems
locally then going national will be a smoother transition. Fix the
problems in your home, your state, then come together as a
union. The NAWSA would not have been able to be recognized
without the WCTU support of the “home protection” ballot.
