We need to participate in that… Times change and so do the needs of students and programs. The West Michigan Theatre Festival (WMTF) is a Theatre Festival designed for students and programs from across the State of Michigan. The goal of the Festival is for students to perform their works for other students, and get feedback and critique that helps performers and technicians improve their craft, their program and help them on their way into College Programs. The West Michigan Theatre Festival is sponsored by Western Michigan University’s Department of Theatre and The Grand Rapids Civic Theatre School of Theatre Arts. Learn from some of the best Theatre Educators in West Michigan about where your production strengths are, and how to improve performance as well. All in a non-competitive and supportive environment. Sowhat’ssodifferentaboutthisFestival?Thebigdifferencescomedowntofivethings;Time,content,critique,awards,andmoney.

TIME:UnlikeotherFestivalsettings,theWMTFopensperformancesupto60minutes.YourOneActcanbreatheandnotbeundersuchatighttimeconstraint.TakingplaceinearlyFebruary,usetheWMTFcritiquetohelpimproveyourproductionformoreperformances.ContactFestivalAdministrationifyourproductionneedsmorethan60

minutes.Theonlyissueifyourproductionislonger,itmayimpactyourcritiquetime.CONTENT:ThereisnooverridingthemeofcontentattheWMTF.BringaComedy,aDrama,aMusical,whateveryourstudentsareworkingon.Isyourprogramsmaller?Evenclassroomproductionshaveaplaceonourstage.Iscuttingapieceproblematicforyou?BringoneactofyourMusicalinstead.Noshoworprogramistoobigortoosmall.Theonlylimitationplacedonyourproductionisoffstagestoragespace,andhowbigatruckyoumightneedforscenery.

CRITIQUE:Cliniciansworkwithyourstudentsonyourset,inthespace,immediatelyfollowingyourproduction.Cliniciansworkspecificactingmomentswiththecast,anddealwiththeactualtechinthespace.The30minutecritiqueisconductedbyTheatreProfessionals.EachproductionwillhavetwoClinicians,onewhosefocusisActingandPerformance,theothersisDesignandStagecraft.

AWARDS:Everyparticipatingschoolfillsoutballotsnominatingperformanceandtechfromeveryotherproductionforrecognitionawards.Yourstudentsarethevoicethatisheardinrecognizingotherstudentsandtheirproductions.

MONEY:Thereisonlytheannualonetimeparticipationfeeof$250.ThisfeehelpsoffsetFestivalcostssuchasclinicianfees,participationawards,mailings,Websitefees,etc.Youmaynothaveashowinproductionbutyourschoolcanstillparticipateasspectators.SchoolsthatwanttotakeupaSpectatingroleonlypaya$100fee!SpectatingSchoolsgettosubmitawardballotsandparticipateinanyworkshopsthatareoffered.

That’stheWMTFinanutshell.Non-competitive,yetrewarding.AFestivalsettingthataimstoimprovestudents&programs.Twodaysofschoolsperformingtheirbestwork.Workshopsintroduceactorsandtechnicianstonewskills&techniques.There’sroomformoretowatchshows,learn,andmakenewfriends.
