The different parts of a clockYou can see the numbers 1 to 12 on the clock face. There is a number for each hour. If a clock does not have any numbers, there will be slightly thicker lines where the numbers would be and between them the-re will be 4 smaller lines.

The gap between the lines is one minute.

There are 5 minutes between one big line and the next big line.

Telling the time precisely to the minute, the minute handthe minute hand

The big hand on the clock shows the minutes.

The minute hand takes 60 minutes to travel right round the clock. This means that the clock face is divided up into 60 equal parts to show the minutes. If you want to know the exact time, then you will have to read off the minutes correctly!

The hour hand

The little hand on the clock shows the hour. In one hour it moves from one number to the next. The hour hand takes 12 hours to go right round the clock – this is half of a day.

There are 24 hours in one day.

This means that the hour hand goes round the clock face twice every day!

The full hour in a whole day (with 24 hours)If our clock has a clock face and hands we can’t tell whether it is 12 o’clock midday or 12 o’clock during the night. The hands are in exactly the same position at 5 o’clock in the morning as they are at 5 o’clock in the afternoon, which is also known as 17:00!

Digital clocks – there aren’t any hands! Digital means that numbers are used to show the time. As a result, digital clocks don’t have hands! Clocks with hands are also known as “analog clocks” as opposed to digital clocks.

Digital clocks show 24-hour time! Analog clocks only show 12-hour time!

The display on a digital clock is made up of different fields, which can be light or dark.

In the example on the left, some of the fields have been switched off, so that time 8:45 is shown.
