We are stronger together!
“IMAGINE NO MALARIA!”
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), every 2 minutes in Africa, a child dies of malaria. The fact
of the matter is that malaria is entirely treatable if you have timely access to drugs and health care. But, that's a big
“IF”. Most people in Africa don't get the treatment that they need.
God who “so loved the world” always turns our hearts outward to our neighbors near and far. Our founding
Methodist minister, John Wesley, said: “The world is our parish.” Our United Methodist Church has built hospitals and
clinics across Africa for the past 160 years. But, those hospitals need more equipment and lifesaving medicines to
treat people infected with malaria.
In 2008, the United Methodist Church joined the global movement against malaria by embarking on the
"Imagine No Malaria" fund raising campaign. Our denomination pledged $75 million. Our CaliforniaPacific Annual
Conference pledged $3 million.
GOOD NEWS! We are making a difference. Many more children in SubSaharan Africa are surviving malaria
since the “Imagine No Malaria” campaign was launched. WHO reports that since the year 2010, malaria death rates
in Africa have fallen by 67%.
God who “so loved the world” calls the people of Africa God's beloved. They are our brothers and sisters. So
let us extend our help. Harris Church has dedicated Sundays, February 21st & 28th to be accepting your special
offerings for “Imagine No Malaria”. As little as $10 can save a life! Let us make our checks to “Harris UMC” and
write “INM” on the memo line.
We are all in this together !

Donation For Mission Programs Of Harris
In early September Mr. Robert (Bob) Garrett who was in Hawaii under contract to the Honolulu
Aerial Rail Transit (HART) said that he would like to donate his 2007 Mercedes-Benz C230 to Harris for the
Bazaar. With thanksgiving to God, this news was gladly accepted.
The car was delivered to Harris UMC in early December when Mr. Garrett returned to California. It
was sold under a sealed bid process on December 19. During the time Mr. Garrett was in Honolulu, he
participated in some of the Harris activities.
Harris UMC is grateful to Mr. Garrett for donating his car for mission outreach. Special thanks are
also extended to those who assisted in the receipt, sale and transfer of the donated car.

HARRIS PRESCHOOL NEWS!
Last month the staff and children returned after a two week Christmas vacation. We were so excited to
welcome four new students in the beginning of the month. The children adjusted nicely back into the routine of
being in school again after such a long break.
We are excited that our staff members were able to participate in various professional development
opportunities including CPR and First Aid training/re-certification, safety procedures, and strategic planning for
the future.
This month we look forward to exploring feelings and celebrating Chinese New Year and Valentine’s Day!

Harris Covenant Missionary Speaker
Jonathan McCurley, missionary with the General Board of Global Ministries
of The United Methodist Church, will speak at the March 13, 2015 Worship Service
at 10:45 am. Jonathan is assigned to the Asian Rural Institute (ARI) in northern
Japan where he serves as the Community Life Coordinator.
As a part of this worship service, the One Great Hour of Sharing Offering will
be taken. This offering supports the work of the United Methodist Committee on
Relief (UMCOR) which is a major funding partner for the Asian Rural Institute.
Also noteworthy is that 2016 marks the fifth anniversary of the Tohoku
earthquake. ARI and Global Ministries of which UMCOR is a part, are strong
mission partners, and the relationship has intensified in the aftermath of the March 11, 2011 Tohoku earthquake
and tsunami that devastated this Japan region. The United Methodist Committee on Relief has provided major
financial support for ARI’s involvement in responding to this Tohoku earthquake.
The Asian Rural Institute seeks to build an environmentally healthy, just, & peaceful ecumenical ministry
in which all persons can live to their fullest potential. ARI is rooted in the love of Jesus Christ. It trains rural
leaders for lives of sharing & work in grassroots communities, primarily in Asia, Africa, and the Pacific region. It
emphasizes sustainable agriculture, sound ecological practices, leadership & community development. Since
1973, ARI has trained over 1,000 women & men from more than 50 countries throughout Asia & Africa.

A
THOUGHTFUL MOMENT
FROM YOUR STEWARDSHIP
TEAM…..
One of the wonderful things about each
New Year is that it brings with it a sense of new
beginnings, 365 days of promise & possibility!
Some of us use this time to bring freshness to our
lives. We may decide to de-clutter the junk drawer or
closet, remove the negatives from our diets & try to
develop a healthier lifestyle.
As part of the Harris UMC Ohana, changing or parting
with some things for a season may also help to de-clutter
your spiritual life. Doing so helps to make room for a new
vision in response to God’s everlasting love.
For example, some of us worship in the same pew
surrounded by the same friends year after year. Choosing to
worship from a new seat may give you a different perspective
of the worship experience AND it may change the people you
interact with each Sunday! How well do you know the
people on the Mauka or Makai side of the sanctuary???
Let’s step out of our comfort zone, make a
change, begin a conversation with someone you
don’t know very well, and see what happens!!

IN MINISTRY TOGETHER!
New Years’ Resolutions…have you made any? I have subscriptions to food magazines with lots of pages
marked for recipes that I want to try (the photos are so yummy looking!). The stack of magazines is high but I end
up cooking or baking the same old things…just to save time or because I can’t find that one new recipe that looked
so good! So, my resolution this year is to try one new recipe a month.
What about our commitments to God’s ministries? Like cooking the same dishes, we may be in the comfort
zone of serving in the same ministry team or supporting the same project(s) we’ve participated in year after year.
God loves us for that, but could it be possible that God also gives us new opportunities to grow and serve no matter
what our age or situation? I think so! After all, God is dynamic, life-giving and there is so much that needs to be
done to bring hope and peace to our world.
What is your new found passion? What new gifts can you share? Who needs our help? Talk to others, to
me too, and communicate your dreams. Let’s continue to grow together by sharing our ideas, passions and gifts as
we discern God’s call to love our neighbors. Can this be a New Year’s resolution that we take seriously? To keep
my New Years’ resolution, I plan to share a new recipe with you monthly. Here’s the first one…..
Bon Appétite!

KEY LIME PIE
Pie Crust: Buy a prepared 9” pie crust. Or make your own - In food processor or bowl place 1 1/3 c sifted flour, ½
tsp. salt, ½ c Crisco. Pulse or cut to small pieces. Sprinkle ice water and combine to make soft dough. Roll out and
place in pie dish, flute edges, prick pastry with fork. Heat oven to 400˚. Bake crust on a rimmed baking sheet 20-25
minutes or until firm and slightly brown. Cool. Reduce heat to 350˚.
Filling:
4 large egg yolks – whisk until slightly thickened, about 1 minute.
1 14oz. can sweetened condensed milk – gently whisk into egg mixture until combined
½ c Key lime juice (bottled or from fresh key limes) – whisk in above.
Pour into cooled crust, spread evenly. Bake on a rimmed baking sheet for 20 minutes – the filling will be only
partially set. Cool to room temperature then refrigerate until the filling is completely set, at least 5 hours.
Top the pie:
1 ½ c cold heavy cream
1 oz (1/4 c) confectioners’ sugar
¾ tsp. vanilla extract
With electric mixer, beat cream, sugar and vanilla on med.-high speed to firm peaks. Spoon over the filling swirling
attractively. Slice and serve.
