2012 Report to Our Community

we are your futureWe are your foundation

To our community of supporters The Latino Community Foundation (LCF) is yourfoundation; we are your future. And, that future beginsnow.

California is home to the largest number of Latinos inAmerica. At 14 million they are nearly 40% of thestate’s population. Latinos are young, with an averageage of 27. Demographers estimate that by 2015Latinos will be the largest ethnic group in California. This is a phenomenon that already exists in Californiapublic schools, half of all public school students are Latino.

LCF began as a vehicle to increase philanthropicinvestments in critical issues facing the growingLatino community. These issues include: significanthigh school drop-out rates, low family wages, pooraccess to resources, and crowded housing. We knowthat dedicated individuals with a common focus canand do make a difference.

Your financial support and commitment has meantthat, together, over the last five years, we haveinvested $2.2 million in California’s Latinocommunity. Investments go to amazing organizationsrun by tireless leaders that educate, employ, feed, andprovide health care services to hundreds of thousands

of Latino children and their families. From Fresno toHollister to Concord, LCF now funds work in tencounties in California.

Our journey is just beginning. California faces ashortage of almost a million college-educated workersby 2025. The future of the state’s workforce is directlylinked to the educational outcomes of Latino studentswho are in school right now. Parent surveysconsistently point to the fact that Latino parents havehigh aspirations for their children. We must turn these aspirations into reality for the sake ofCalifornia’s future.

LCF’s partnerships are growing stronger. A betterfuture stands before us if we work together to invest incommunity leaders who champion innovative solutionsand advocate for systems that will yield greateropportunities.

The board and staff thank you, our donors andcommunity partners for your support. We hope as youreflect on this report, you can continue to imagineways we can work together to build a better future forCalifornia.

I align my passion and pocketbook to make a difference inthe lives of Latino childrenand their families. Giving tothe Latino Community Foundation has been a perfect opportunity for me toinvest in solutions that aretackling tough issues in ourcommunity.” Isabel Valdés

LCF is an agent for change There is no doubt that Latinos are pivotal to thesuccess of California. Solutions that build skills, resources, and opportunities are not easy. LCF investsin solutions that fundamentally change the lives ofLatino families.

Investments are one piece of the puzzle. The otherpiece is to spark partnerships that bring leaders, ideas, and funding collaborations together to empowercommunities.

This spark led to a $1,000,000 investment in eightnon-profit organizations that together contributed tostatewide gains in broadband Internet access. On theground, partners reached 35,000 Latino families withculturally-focused messages about the benefits ofhaving a computer and Internet access at home. Theytrained over 5,100 very low-income, primarily Latinamothers who had never used a computer, connectingthem with hands-on computer application skills. Thesewomen have learned invaluable skills such as how to

use the Internet to support their children’s education,to find health information, and to look for jobs.

This important collaboration, with support from theCalifornia Emerging Technology Fund and FederalReinvestment and Recovery Act funds, has led todemonstrable outcomes. Recent data from the PublicPolicy Institute of California shows an increase amongLatinos in home broadband Internet access from 39%in 2009 to 58% in 2012.

It has meant that in the Mayfair neighborhood of SanJose a mother was so inspired by the training that shewent out and bought a computer and connected it tobroadband Internet, giving her three school-agechildren a new tool to help with schoolwork. Sheenrolled in community college courses online and isnow working to obtain her associates degree. This isthe power of community-driven solutions.

Latino Community Foundation plays the role as ‘connector’ between their funded community partners and outside resources. Leveragingtheir role as a foundation andthought leader, LCF introducestheir community partners to experts and resources that areoften out of reach. This is how positive impact is multiplied.”Ezra Garrett, PG&E

LCF solves immediate and long-term issues This year LCF completed its four-year Children andYouth Initiative. Through the Initiative, its flagshipprogram, LCF committed $1,000,000 to increaseeducational opportunities for Latino children inCalifornia.

LCF partnered with 16 Latino-based organizations thatserved over 50,000 Latino children and their families, with grants that ranged in size from $10,000 to$25,000. Funds focused on increasing earlyeducation opportunities for children ages 0-5,supporting parent engagement in children’s learning, providing pre-natal health care for young mothers, andpreventing teenage pregnancy so young people stayengaged in and finish high school.

LCF invested with an eye to the future. We chosepartners with deep community roots that are devotedto long-term outcomes such as 1) ensuring moreLatino children are able to enter school ready to learn,2) guaranteeing all students graduate from highschool, and 3) empowering parents to engage andsupport their children’s education.

This model required that we stay involved and investedin communities over time. This commitmentstrengthened partnerships and allowed LCF to targetand advance new opportunities.

One such community is the City of Richmond inContra Costa County. Richmond’s Latino populationhas grown from 26% in 2000 to nearly 40% in 2010.In 2008, LCF was the first funder of The LatinaCenter’s pilot program, Primero Nuestros Niños/OurChildren First.

Careful reflection among The Latina Center’sleadership triggered the need to adjust their servicesand focus greater attention on preventive measures foryounger children. With an initial $15,000 grant fromLCF, The Latina Center launched a 12-week parentingclass that has now engaged over 500 Latino parents todevelop strong emotional, social, and educationalabilities among young children in the community.

With LCF support, The Latina Center has successfullyimplemented and expanded this proven model ofsuccess, receiving significant funds from other countyand corporate partners. Primero Nuestros Niños is nowa core element of The Latina Center’s mission, makinga meaningful difference in the lives of thousands ofchildren in the Richmond community.

LCF maximizes your investment LCF invests in strong anchor organizations that delivermultiple, critical services to hundreds of thousands oflow-income families in three core areas 1) Childrenand Youth, 2) Family Financial Empowerment, and 3) Healthy Communities.

Together these trusted community partners:

• Provided 6,723 Latino children ages 0-5 withstructured early education programs that preparedchildren to enter school ready to learn.

• Increased the ability of 8,706 parents to engage intheir children’s learning and improve parent-childrelationships.

• Connected 20,298 young people withcomprehensive programs that delayed pregnancy andsupported strong, youth development.

• Connected over 5,100 Latino parents with digitalliteracy and broadband Internet access.

Community partners also participated in a learningcommunity to strengthen organizational capacity. Thisadditional support from LCF directly resulted inimproved service delivery (among 80% of partners),increased partnerships among organizations (among67% of partners), and increased organizationalbudgets (among 60% of partners).

In 2012, LCF invested in 10 California counties:Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco, SantaClara, San Mateo, San Benito, Santa Cruz, SanJoaquin, and Fresno. The following represent LCFinvested partners for 2011-2012. CHILDREN AND YOUTH

Imagine if LCF could double its investmentSince 2008 LCF has invested $2.2M, impacting thelives of nearly 100,000 Latino children and theirfamilies.

For every $42 dollars invested in the Latinocommunity, LCF partners are able to provide one ofthe following services to a family:

• A multi-week program to at-risk youth; or

• A 6-week kindergarten preparedness course; or

• A basic computer skills course; or

• A 10-week parent training class.

Imagine if we came together and doubled or tripledLCF investments over the next five years. Thisexpansion could broaden and deepen current impactin California. LCF will continue to make grants toleaders and neighborhoods at the intersection ofservice delivery and neighborhood change.

It also means LCF will be able to increase resources tosupport a groundswell of leaders coming together toadvance and advocate for Latino children and theirfamilies through the launch of the California LatinoAgenda. The issues we face in California go beyondfunding services to meet immediate challenges. It istime to invest in a diverse network of parents andorganizations to come together to build democracy inthis dynamic, multicultural State.

By integrating and growing community assets –investing in leaders, culturally-grounded solutions, andcommunity engagement, we will build a brighter futurefor California

This is a reality that you can make happen.
