In this activity you are comparingtwo countries

(One developed and one developing)

Population Pyramids can…Compare males vs. females in a population

Compare different age groups in a population

Page 6: We can compare different countries to see these differences. Human Population Growth Although the human population as a whole is growing at an amazing

Let’s review...

1. What is the most populated age group in this population?

3. About how many children in this population are under the age of 5? How many are female?

2. Predict what age group will be the most populated in 15 years.

Page 7: We can compare different countries to see these differences. Human Population Growth Although the human population as a whole is growing at an amazing

Let’s review...

1. What is the most populated age group in this population? The most populated age group is those between 20 and 24 years in age.

2. Predict what age group will be the most populated in 15 years. Assuming that there is not a major growth period in this population in the next 15 years, the group that is currently 20-24 years old will be in the 35-39 age group.

Let’s review...

3. About how many children in this population are under the age of 5?Approximately 12.5% of the population is 0-4 years old. How many of them are female?

Looking on the left side of the pyramid in the 0-4 age bracket, about 6% of those under age 5 are female.

United States vs. Nigeria - 2005

Age DistributionThe largest portion of Nigeria’s population are 15 and under. The largest portion of The U.S.A’s population is between 40 and 50. Since more of the population in Nigeria will move into reproductive years, Nigeria will experience more rapid growth than the U.S.A.

United States vs. Nigeria - 2005

Nigeria still shows a high death rate. Out of over 137 millionPeople, only about 2 million survive beyond 70.( approx. 1.4%)

The US has a much larger percentage of persons over 70.

In Nigeria, men and woman have equal life expectancy, while in the US, more women survive above 70.

Task 2 – Compare the changes in both countries from 2005 to 2025.

Examine the predicted changes - in both countries.

Identify the major changes.

Does your developing country change in a similar way to your developed country?Different ways?

Explain.

Find the significant changes in this 20 year span.

Task 3- Describe 3 factors that affect the populations of the countries you researched.

Consider…

- immigration/emigration - population density

- family planning - literacy

- status of women - disease• Etc…

• BE SPECIFIC TO THE COUNTRY • In Nigeria – Disease has an impact on life expectancy

(47 years). Specifically, there are 2.6 million people living with AIDS, and Nigeria has one of the highest rates of Lassa fever (find out what it is – if you don’t know)

Page 14: We can compare different countries to see these differences. Human Population Growth Although the human population as a whole is growing at an amazing

You can support conclusions with data – such as population density

The population density of Nigeria is 150,927 / sq.kmThe population density of the USA is 32,259 / sq.km

How might this affect the spread of disease?

• Final Task – Explain how one technological advance might affect the predicted change in one population from 2005 to 2025. Is it positive or negative? Provide EVIDENCE!

• Example The demands of massive population growth on wood for cooking

causes rapid deforestation in Nigeria. The burning of wood fuel is burdensome and has a far-reaching negative global impact. These global trends will lead to environmental destabilization leading to deforestation and global warming. Science strongly supports the fact that deforestation for agricultural and fuel use is changing weather patterns, causing soil erosion, and depleting plant and animal life. Solar ovens (cookers) offer a powerful solution to the effects of deforestation, and can have an enormous positive impact on the everyday life of millions of people in Nigeria by improving their nutrition, health, quality of life, and increase their life span.
