The season of Lent, which gives us time to examine and assess howour discipleship is living up to the call of our baptism, continuesthrough March 31. To help guide us, our Sunday morning adultChristian Education time is following the pattern of the promiseselders and deacons make when they are ordained and installed by thecongregation. Because ordained ministers differ from other baptizedmembers in function only, the questions they consider in preparation

members in function only, the questions they consider in preparationfor their ministry can benefit yours and my ministry, too.

All ministry is a gift from Jesus Christ. The ministry of Jesus Christ isthe basis of all church ministries; our standard, as the Body of Christ,is the pattern of the One who came “not to be served, but to serve”(Mark 10:45), and who taught “as one having authority” (Mark 1:22).

All Christians are called through their baptism to this ministry ofservanthood, which we call discipleship, in the world. The focus ofour discipleship is based on the needs of our location, our interestsand gifts, yet is always rooted in the ways of Jesus Christ in spirit andoutreach.

Here are the topics we’ll consider in March:

March 4 – Ordering the Church

March 11 – Friendship in Christ

March 18 – Peace, Unity, and Purity

March 25 – Energy, Intelligence, Imagination, and Love

Family Promise Week

It was a quiet Family Promise (FP) Week. After

Page 11: We can make a difference together - westoverhills.org · Mary Beth Sanders Gocin from the Extension Service has been teaching ... Rev. Sally Johnson and Candice Misenheimer ... food

It was a quiet Family Promise (FP) Week. Afterthe first day, only one family was still in theprogram, but what a delightful mom and threeyear old daughter they were. Monday wasValentine making day with Mary Chrisman’screative guidance. The favorite activities thenext four days were making play doughcreations and playing in the gym. SusanMauney was a friendly and helpful FellowshipFriend on Tuesday. Allen and Kathleen

McNamee were favorite friends for playing in the gym and conversation around thedinner table on Wednesday. A number of folks volunteered but were excused because wehad so few guests.

However, meals still needed to be prepared and our Presbyterian women cooked somedelicious suppers. St. Paul’s Methodist members prepared two of the evening meals, andPulaski Heights Presbyterian Church pizza is always delicious on Fridays. We are delightedthat they partner with us when we host Family Promise families.

Because of donations to the Family Promise fund, we were able to take the FP family tothe circus on Saturday. It was Star’s first circus and she was wide-eyed taking in the wholeexperience. Mom Lynn and daughter Star even got to ride on the same elephant withLyric Rogers, who was Star’s Fellowship Friend of the week from Westover. NancyPassini, John Mac Leod, and Mary Chrisman chaperoned and made sure everyone hadfun.

All in all, over three hundred volunteer hours were recorded by many church members tomake sure we provided nutritious meals, a safe and comfortable place to sleep, and awarm and welcoming haven for a family who was temporarily without a home of theirown. Thank you, Westover Hills volunteers!
