Are you Padworth?

We invite you to join us at Padworth College – ‘a school which celebrates individuality and embraces global citizenship’ – to be part of a school with a difference. Our students are unique individuals and open-minded global citizens, and our aim is to empower each and every one to be a citizen of the world.

What is unique about studying at Padworth ?

Our educational philosophy is based on the Oxford University tutorial model of teaching, with small informal classes and a personal, first name basis.

A programme of learning is devised for each individual student that reflects career aspirations, as well as personal interests and ability.

Our class sizes are small for optimum learning and to encourage student-teacher interaction.

We embrace the mind-set of global citizenship.

Our student body, representing approximately 30 different nationalities, celebrates cultural diversity.

We combine a traditional British, well-balanced curriculum with a modern and unique approach to learning.

We provide challenging and in-depth study as preparation for entrance to top universities.

Our boarding, with its strong focus on pastoral care and student welfare, ensures there is a balance of academic study alongside recreational and social activities.

We are located close to London and Heathrow International Airport, in an historic country estate in the middle of a picturesque and safe environment.

A School with a Difference

Padworth College was founded in 1963 by Oxford University tutor, Peter Fison, and a group of Oxford dons whose vision was to bring Oxford’s educational philosophy of tutorial teaching to school-level education. Our founders saw the potential for a different, modern approach to learning in contrast to rigid, traditional teaching meth-ods, which allowed little room for individuality.

Our aim is to uphold the innovative vision of our founders to offer a truly unique educational experience – based on small classes in a personal, informal atmosphere, which focuses on each individual’s personal talents. We aim to develop reflective, creative and caring thinkers with a worldview based on open-mindedness, intercultural understanding and respect. Since our founding we have remained true to our mission and kept our founding principles at the heart of what we are and what we do.

Celebrating Individuality

Individuality is celebrated through our highly differentiated learning approach. Students are encouraged to be who they are, develop their own personality and explore their strengths and weaknesses. Our policy of no school uniform is part of this vision.

We create an atmosphere where students are encouraged to engage actively in what they are learning and to be reflective and creative in their thinking. Our approach to learning is enquiry-based and inter-active. Students and teachers are seen as equal partners in the quest for learning – participation, engagement and enjoyment are key!

Each student follows his or her own individual and unique pro-gramme of learning, determined not by age but where each student is in terms of their knowledge. It is a flexible system that aims at challenging on the one hand and supporting on the other. Students are not tied into a particular level for a pre-determined amount of time, acknowledging that we are different and all learn at different rates. Central to this is the development of each individual’s potential.

At Padworth, students benefit from small class sizes. There is a strong expectation that our students are here to work, to achieve their potential and to become broadly educated as a preparation for university and life. Our students are challenged, supported and guided so that they develop a clear sense of purpose and direction for the future.

The entire school community operates on first name terms. By re-moving the “Sir/Miss’’ barrier, an atmosphere of mutual respect and learning together is created. Students are steered towards taking responsibility for themselves, their community and their learning on the path to adulthood. Becoming a citizen of the world in the true sense of the word is the goal.

Embracing Global Citizenship

We encourage our students to develop a view of the world based on open-mindedness, intercultural understanding and respect. At Padworth, we embrace the mind-set of global citizenship. The world is our extended classroom – our educational village.

We celebrate global enrichment through the diversity of our student body which makes us the school we are – a place of learning where students regardless of nationality interact with each other in har-mony. All students are united by one common goal: to gain a unique Padworth education.

Our students leave Padworth as confident young adults who have not only achieved excellent academic results, but have also gained a genuine insight into what it means to be a world citizen.

We are accredited by the Independent Schools Council, by the British Council for the teaching of English as an Ad-ditional Language (EAL) and are a member of the Boarding Schools Association.

Our valuesAt Padworth every individual matters. There is an unspoken, unwritten code of conduct that reflects our core values: respect, tolerance and a genuine care for each member of the community. We are a community which celebrates differences through learning from others.

Our educational philosophy aims at Helping students to gain a deep understanding of their subjects

and develop the skills to apply their knowledge to different contexts

Enabling students to learn how to think, make sound judgements and respond to questions and challenges – active learners

Allowing students to pursue their individual academic interests within the context of their subject to develop their independence and joy of learning

Nurturing a close relationship between student and teacher to support each student’s overall personal development

Our BoardingBoarding, with its strong focus on pastoral care and student welfare, ensures there is a balance of academic study alongside recreational and social activities. Our school is essentially a boarding community with a global perspective. We welcome students from all over the world and cel-ebrate cultural differences in our diverse community. Our day students are an integral part of this community and enjoy the benefits of having time and space to develop their skills, interests and friendships. At Padworth, we provide a safe environment in which to live and learn. Languages and Cultural Awareness open the Door to the World

Teaching in small groups and our interactive approach to learning provide an ideal environment for language learning. The diverse lin-guistic and cultural background of our students means that language acquisition happens all the time. Outside the classroom our interna-tional atmosphere is a unique place where languages can be applied and practised. Every student is given opportunities to exercise their individual language skills and develop confidence in learning a new language. Our British students enjoy studying modern languages as part of their curriculum.

English as an Additional Language (EAL)Our language programme is embedded in our differentiated learning approach tailored to the individual requirements of every student. Our highly qualified EAL department (DELTA certified) aims at de-veloping and improving each student’s English knowledge using an interactive teaching style. International students are evaluated and placed accordingly in one of three levels based on their command of the English language: E1 Beginner (following the Cambridge Key English Test (KET) curriculum), E2 Intermediate (following the

Cambridge Preliminary English Test (PET) curriculum), E3 Advanced (following the IGCSE English as a Second Language (ESL) curriculum). This is a flexible system where students are monitored regularly to allow for a personalised access to English language support. Sixth Form students are prepared for IELTS (International English Language Testing System) as this is an entrance requirement for universities in the United Kingdom.

‘Student Tandems’We celebrate our unique way of learning languages by encouraging ‘Student Tandems’ for linguistic and cultural exchange. Our teacher-led ‘Student Tandems’ are face-to-face encounters in small groups. ‘Tandems’ give students the possibility to learn a new, foreign language from a native speaker as a two-way exchange. This reflects the cultural awareness shared by all at Padworth.

Life Beyond Padworth – Higher Education and Careers

We provide challenging and in-depth study as preparation for entrance to top universities in the United Kingdom.

Students are encouraged to identify areas of interest and aptitude early on in Year 9, with a view to choosing the most appropriate subjects and career pathway. During Years 10 and 11 (GCSE), careers guidance is supported through the Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) programme and tutor groups, providing opportunities for individual discussions with students.

In the Sixth Form (Years 12 and 13: A Level/Business Foundation), care is taken to ensure that all students are guided carefully in their choice of A Level subjects appropriate for their intended field of study and career intentions. This is especially important for those wishing to study subjects where there is high demand for university places, such as Law or Medicine. Students are helped and supported with their applications to universities through UCAS.

Our University and Careers Adviser gives comprehensive individual assistance to each student. Preparation for entry to Oxford and Cambridge universities is also provided.

We have an excellent track record of placing students in leading universities, especially in the United Kingdom, and are committed to giving every possible assistance to students in our care and former students should they require further assistance. The university desti-nations of our students can be found on the school website.
