Part of our Christian ethos is looking after our world – we sing this hymn in our school assemblies to remind us of our responsibilities.

Children take part in lessons where they can investigate and discover ecological issues – from the youngest in Reception to the

oldest in Year 6.

Children in Year 3 made scarecrows from recycled materials to stop the birds from eating the seeds they had planted.

Year 1 made windmills as part of their science investigations in discovering the power of the wind.

Our school has a garden where we continue to grow vegetables and flowers.

Reception/ Year 1children explore the soil looking for minibeasts.

plot before they can plant the seeds.

We encourage the children to be involved in our community by reducing, recycling

and re-using waste through positive action by taking part in local initiatives.

The School has it’s own recycling bin and each class has responsibility for recycling their own waste paper.

Recycling Yellow Pages Directories

Year 4 won the inter-school competition for the class who brought in the most directories with a total of 277! They won a bird watching book and a board game based on an environmental theme.

Everyone was asked to bring in old Yellow Pages directories for recycling – we collected a total of 13 wheelie bins full!

Yellow PagesRecycling Competition

We collected a total of 13 wheelie bins full! Blackpool council presented us with the “Bronze Beech” award and £100 prize money for our efforts.

The Greenfingers appeal asked each child in our school to grow sunflowers and be sponsored for each centimetre of height. This is to raise money to provide sensory gardens for children in hospices around the U.K.

• discuss ecological issues that are relevant to school

•Pass on information to others

Sustainable TransportChildren at St. Nicholas’ school take part in “WOW!” -Walk on Wednesdays. Some children and staff cycle to school – we have our own bike shed! Staff are invited to participate in Blackpool’s Green Miles initiative run by Blackpool Council.

Future Projects

Our school is growing and with the new School build we are planning to do more by :-

• Introduce more facilities for recycling schemes• Involving the local Community in our recycling • Have gardens for each class• Re-use materials for Art & Design projects• Design and develop an eco-garden• Becoming a sustainable school• Be awarded the Eco-schools Green Award• Encourage more children to walk to school or come

by sustainable transport
