PASTOR STEVE RATH “Start Spreading the News”

You’ve likely heard it said that

good news travels fast, and why

shouldn’t it? Who doesn’t get

excited at hearing word of at the

announcement of a new birth, a

great accomplishment, or some

outcome that lifts our spirits and

put an extra spring in our step?

When the news that travels is the

“Good News” of the gospel then

the truth in the saying is even

more true. In the relationship that Jesus formed with his

disciples, Luke tells of an important story in Jesus’ mission:

1 After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and

sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and

place where he was about to go. 2 He told them, “The

harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the

Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into

his harvest field. 3 Go! I am sending you out like lambs

among wolves. 4 Do not take a purse or bag or san-

dals; and do not greet anyone on the road.

5 “When you enter a house, first say, ‘Peace to this

house.’ 6 If someone who promotes peace is there,

your peace will rest on them; if not, it will return to

you. 7 Stay there, eating and drinking whatever they

give you, for the worker deserves his wages. Do not

move around from house to house.

8 “When you enter a town and are welcomed, eat

what is offered to you. 9 Heal the sick who are there

and tell them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to

you.’

16 “Whoever listens to you listens to me; whoever re-

jects you rejects me; but whoever rejects me rejects

him who sent me.” 17

The seventy-two returned with

joy and said, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in

your name.”

There’s much to be said about the meaning Jesus had in

mind here, but suffice it to say that sharing the love of God

with others who were ready to

hear it became a blessing to those

who received it as well as those

who told it. Like the cities and

towns that surrounded the base of

Jesus’ ministry, our world can

seem hostile to God’s love, but

when we dare to get a bit closer

we discover that God’s Spirit will

direct us to those whom he has

prepared for us to meet.

Living the words of Jesus can be indeed a most joyful life,

and regardless of age or place, all of us can discover that

we take the message of Jesus in many ways:

Have you been one who’s paid a visit to one of our

homebound members or sent them a note or card

reminding them of God’s love?

Have you collected a bag full of groceries for a local

food pantry or donated items to a local mission

project?

Do you have opportunities in your job to witness to

those who might be “at risk” in our community?

Sometimes just offering a kind word and a smile to

those you meet can brighten their day. Who can-

not do that a bit more with each day?

The list and its possibilities are endless, but know that

wherever you go, the opportunity to spread the glorious

news of the Gospel goes with you! You have discovered

the joy of giving a sharing the Kingdom of God. Thank you,

thank you, thank you! (That’s my way of cheering you on

with words!)

With each new day, pray that God might lead you to those

whom he wants you to meet, to go to the places he needs

to go, to do the work that he’s called you to do. Start

spreading the News and the world will never be the same

again. God stories are everywhere!

Joyfully yours and His,

Pastor Steve

Sunday, June 9 everyone is invited to wear red

in celebration of our Pentecost celebration.

Churches that employ liturgical colors generally use red on Pentecost as a symbol of power and fire of the Spirit. For Christians, Pentecost is a

holiday on which we commemorate the coming of the Holy Spirit. Before the events of the first Pentecost, which came a few weeks after Jesus’ death and resurrection, there were

followers of Jesus, but no movement that could be meaningful called “the church”. Thus, from a historical point of view, Pentecost is the day on which the church was started. This is also true from a spiritual perspective,

since the Spirit brings the church into existence and enlivens. Thus, Pentecost is the church’s birthday!

Mortgage Reduction Challenge

Jerry McCreery, Chair of Finance made the following announcement Sunday, March 17: The late Dale and Joan Landis will give a gift of $100,000 to be applied to the Family Life Center mortgage principal. This gift is contingent on matching funds from church members. The church will receive this gift if we match it dollar to dollar. The maximum gift is $100,000. If we fall short of the $100,000 and match a portion, the gift will match our donations. We can donate more than the $100,000 gift, but donations over $100,000 will not be matched. The challenge to match the gift dollars will run through December 31, 2019. During this time the church will continue to make the monthly mortgage payment. Our matching dollars will be above and beyond our 2019 pledges and regular giving. Check or cash donations can be put in the Sunday collection plate and must be designated to the mortgage principal either on the giving envelope or check. Donations will be tracked and communicated during the challenge. At the end of each month, all designated Mortgage Reduction Challenge donations will be forwarded to the mortgage company and applied to the mortgage principal. As of May 24, 2019 we have a total of $22,970.00 Look for the “Challenge Thermometer” out in the Narthex area!

Imagine a short, but powerful service with warm welcomes, hospitality, a meal, conversation, worship and communion! Welcome to the new Sunday Supper – a special service where everyone will “Belong. Be Loved. Be Fed.”

We know that when people gather at God’s Table (a sacred and time-honored tradition), doubters and disciples share in a tradition that’s been practiced for over 2000 years. We want everyone to experience and share the love of Jesus, as we live our lives like him!

The goal of Sunday Supper is to offer a simple worship experience for those preferring a different type of devotion and connection to God. All are welcome to attend, including people who may have little or no church experience, those who are lonely, or those who just need a meal. The table is open (shared meals are the best meals) and a space is reserved for everyone. All means all.

Sunday Supper’s components are a meal, message and music. The meal is prepared by church members. The message will be a short, “kid-friendly” object lesson relatable to the entire family. Prayer, communion and music are integral pieces of the experience.

Sunday Supper is not big into dogma or creeds. It is intentionally low-tech. We are trying our best to connect with God; to love God and people. We want to live like Jesus.

Sunday Supper welcomes faith questions and doubts. Sunday Supper will be a fun event with a family atmosphere. It is a place to listen and talk about things that really matter. Hopefully, it changes lives and strengthens the community.

Preparation is key to efforts starting a new project. Much time, effort, research and reflection have been part of our Sunday Supper planning. Since October, the committee has met on a regular basis.

Every person on the committee knows the significance of trying to do things well and address the details. The committee has examined efforts of other dinner churches, and one dinner church has even been visited.

The committee knows Sunday Supper is something

we will all “grow” into. The heart of Sunday Supper is not telling people what they should want, but reminding them who they are.

Join us June 2nd at 5:00 PM for the

FIRST SUNDAY SUPPER!

The committee would like to treat the first Sunday Supper like a dress rehearsal, essentially a trial-run that allows us to work out the details. This will give us a chance to evaluate and improve. In July, Sunday Supper will be open to all!

How can you help?

• Be a part of the experience.

• Prayer, encouragement, support of the effort, and becoming involved are good ways.

• Individuals or groups can volunteer to be the kitchen crew.

• You can be on the Sunday Supper team as you desire.

We need YOU to attend! To be accurate, we need an RSVP to the office by May 26th if you plan to come to the June 2nd Sunday Supper. (Of course, we will have extras for those who forget to RSVP!)

Please come and help start the Sunday Supper Journey on June 2nd. Be curious!

I will betroth you to me in faithfulness. And you shall know

the Lord. ~Hosea 2:20 There are two kinds of people in the world: those who like surprises and those who do not! Sometimes for me, it depends upon what the surprise is!

Life can be full of happy surprises like birthday parties or double rainbows after a thunderstorm! Or perhaps, like me this week, you heard from a long lost friend from high school days!

But life also can include some not-so-happy surprises: the appearance of black mold in the basement, a large dent in your car when you come out of the grocery store, or maybe your dog decided to leave an unwanted deposit on the sofa while you were away on that errand!

Hosea 2:20 describes a happy surprise, a very happy surprise. In this verse, God expresses the depth of his love and commitment to his people. His promise carries all the intensity of a wedding vow. What makes this commitment of faithful love so surprising?

The rest of this small book makes it clear that the people who first heard Hosea speak were pretty much unlovable. God's love was "old news" to them. Despite all the blessings their nation had enjoyed from God's hand,

KRISTY SCHOOLER Prayer Ministry

the people went on living lives of spiritual apathy.

The Lord was angry with their sin. It was an anger born of passion and

compassion. His heart longed for them to repent and return to him before it was too late.

What shall I do with you, O Ephraim? What shall I do with you, O Judah? Your love is like a morning

cloud, like the dew that goes early away. Hosea 6:4

The people didn't think it was any big deal. The Lord, through his prophets, said something entirely different.

Isn't it easy to fall into the same apathy, the same nonchalance, in our relationship with our Lord? Our unfaithfulness isn't a surprise to Jesus, but it saddens and dismays him. Still, he doesn't give up on us. His love never fails us.

The sad and not-so-surprising truth is that we are great sinners. The happy and truly surprising truth is that we have a very great savior!

Thank you, Jesus for your great love, faithfulness, and salvation. Teach us to live in daily repentance, forgiveness and faith.

Keep Praying and Praising, Kristy Schooler

“Living out Christ’s love by responding to our neigh-bors’ needs.”

As spring marches into summer, Good Neighbors in the Vil-lage continues its ministries of ramp-building, home helps, chair volleyball and senior lunch. We’re also celebrating the conclusion of a third year of the LU After School Program and the beginning of what I’ve dubbed the Healthy Kids Food Box Project — a different approach to addressing the food needs of area children during the summer than we’ve tried before. A grant from South Central Power Company will help us provide healthy whole foods and kitchen instruction/tools to families of school-aged children who enroll in the 8-week program (June and July). The grant will primarily be used to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and proteins. We’ll provide several 30-minute kitchen demonstrations and food tastings to show some simple strat-egies for turning whole foods into economical meals the whole family will enjoy and thrive on. We expect to learn some cooking know-how from participants, as well.

All of our programs are volunteer-driven and staffed by members and friends of several Baltimore/Thurston area churches. Anyone can volunteer to be a Good Neighbor. If one of our programs interests you, leave your name and number with Darcy at the Christ UMC office, 740-862-4343, and we’ll return the call, often the same day.

Our major need is for volunteers. We need the ears and hands of experience. And sometimes we just need individu-als who are willing to learn something new or to share some-thing they know but take for granted, such as a competence

in creating healthy meals out of simple, wholesome in-gredients.

• We need people of any age to help with the Healthy Kids Food Box Project and the After School Program when it resumes in August. Our kids especially enjoy working with high school students.

• We need teens and adults interested in helping to build ramps or in learning how. This would be an excel-lent project for area youth fellowship groups to plug into.

• We need handyfolks to assist with simple home re-pairs for neighbors who need a helping hand and don’t have other options or resources.

We are grateful to Pastor Rick Stuhmer for his contribu-tions of wisdom and vision and practicality to Good Neighbors while serving New Zion United Methodist Church. He has answered a call to serve a church near Marietta starting in July and has therefore resigned as a GNIV trustee. We will miss you, Rick!

If you would like a stack of Good Neighbors business cards to give to people who may need our services or to potential volunteers, let me know. Our next board meet-ing will be our annual potluck at 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 5 at New Zion’s picnic shelter. Any-one is welcome to attend.

JIM THOMPSON Outreach & Missions

Backpacks for Buddies

Tammy Harris, teacher and coordinator of this effort at the Middle School, sent us the following message. “I know I've said this before, but I can't thank you enough for all you've done for the kids in our school. It is appreciated by many.“

Christ Church did two food drives for the kids. Another time, a donation of $130 was used for more food. Let’s continue our efforts next school year. Each kid we serve is a person of sacred worth, has gifts, assets, and abilities to share.

Let’s start an Outreach Potholder Project!

An effort is underway to do a worthwhile outreach project and at the same time have fun making a craft. Faette and Wesley Smith have made 150 potholders that were sent to the Tree of Life United Methodist agency in Mission, South Dakota which we help support monetarily through Coins for Missions. Tree of Life director, Linda Gariot, says folks on the Rosebud Reservation love them. You may have made potholders as a hobby yourself! You can go online at Harrisville Designs to see our source of materials. If you would like to join the effort or make a monetary donation for materials, let Jim Thompson know. There is no telling where and what this craft project could accomplish.

Summer Blood Drive Scheduled

Dana Hoisington announces a Red Cross Blood drive on Thursday, July 25th, 2 - 7pm in the Fellowship Hall. Dana says the goal is 18 - 21 donations, but donations are usually down during

the summer months but like to have more than that. A sandwich and other snacks will be waiting when the donors are finished and have a little rest period before heading out for the rest of their day.

A Small Group Volunteer Opportunity

Foundation Dinners, a long-running dinner program in Lancaster for the needy, has an opening for volunteers for a current opening

for the second Thursday of every even month. So it would be June 13th and then every Thursday of every even month after that. If you are interested please let Jim Thompson know. Three to four volunteers are needed from 3:30 to about 5:15 to 5:30. It consists of prepping salads, desserts, and serving clients. After that it's just general cleanup which usually takes about 30 to 45 minutes.

Books for Africa

Information about donating books is at The Connection Center. The drive runs throughout June.

Mission Thought... “When a person gives a poor man shoes, does he do it for the poor man or God? He should do it for God, The poor will often be ungrateful, and you will lose heart if you rely on immediate emotional rewards for your work. But, if you do it for God you will never be discouraged.” Frances Perkins Jim Thompson Missions & Outreach Chair

PRESCHOOL Preschool News

We are currently gearing up for

the 2019-2020 school year. Our

full-day Pre-K classes filled up

quickly, but we still have a few

openings in both our Pre-K and

Preschool half-day classes. We

anticipate these openings being

filled in the next few weeks, so if

you have a child, grandchild,

friend or neighbor who may be interested in the preschool,

please let them know that information and forms are

available on the website or to email us at

[email protected].

This past school year Diley Hill Animal Emergency Center

dropped off canvas and paints to the preschool and invited

us to make some artwork for their clinic. Each class

painted multiple canvases and used their handprints or

fingerprints to make various animals such as cows, bunnies,

fish and pigs. They turned out awesome! If you’d like to see

their artwork, you can visit our Facebook page where we

posted pictures of them. Here are a couple of the canvas

paintings.

We still have Anthony Thomas candy bars for sale. Please

contact Jennifer Lodge if you would like to buy some or sell

a bag of 30. Thank you!

Safety Ministry Team has obtained

several copies of the “Fairfield County

Telelog” from the Fairfield County

Family, Adult & Children First Council.

This brochure has many resources with

contact information. It covers almost anything you could

think of from Adoption Services, Clothing, Day Care,

Health Services, Support Groups, Mental Health,

Transportation and many more. Copies of this brochure

have been placed at the Connection Center. Please

obtain a copy if you feel it could be of assistance to you or

someone in Fairfield County.

There are still openings for the next CPR class. The

signup sheet is at the Connection Center. The next class

has not yet been scheduled by Kasey Farmer, but he is

aware of our eagerness to have the class soon. This will

most likely be the last class until later in the year – so

please fill those openings! This is for youth as well. If

you have any questions, please contact Mardi 614-256-

0566.

The Safety Ministry Team has

made a recommendation to the

Trustees and it was agreed upon to

change the keys to our facilities and

some offices. It has been

determined that there is currently a concern for

accountability for the keys that have been distributed

in the past. The Safety Ministry Team will now be

responsible for the distribution and documentation -

continuing with a focus to improve in making sure

our facilities and congregation are safe. A continued

discussion with the Trustees is pending and once a

plan is obtained this information will be shared in the

near future.

Fathers’ Day Video--Pictures

Needed!!!

For Fathers’ Day , we would

like to prepare a video that

includes pictures of fathers

and their children--you &

your father, or you (if you're a

father) & your children.

Please email your high-resolution pictures to

the church office by June 9.

If you don't have digital pictures, we can scan

them. Be sure to label your picture

so we can be sure to get it back to you.

Master’s Gardeners

After many rainy days with some warm sunshine

thrown in here and there, the church gardens are lush

and full this spring. The flower beds are all adopted

and maintained by the gardeners.

We have some areas that we

could use some help with either on your own to take care of or to assist when

needed.

If you would like to help with the church

gardens, contact Louise Smith at 740-

862-6018.
