Wisdom 1:13-15; 2:23-24. Psalm 30:2, 4, 5-6, 11, 12, 13.
2 Corinthians 8:7, 9, 13-15. Mark 5:21-43. Fear and Faith. Two stories today told by Saint Mark. Both start in fear. Fear by the woman touching Jesus’ cloak and making him unclean. Fear by Jairus over his dying daughter, who regrettably dies before Jesus gets to her. Jesus words to both: faith saves; have faith.
♦ What am willing to do in faith to get some needed action, some blessed relief?
♦ How can I boldly be about asking God for what I (think I) need?
♦ How can I comfort someone facing the death of one they love?
“Jesus, make my heart like unto Yours, or rather transform it into Your own Heart that I may sense the needs of other hearts, especially those who ae sad and suffering. May the rays of mercy rest in my heart” (Diary, 514)
Brothers and sisters in Faith, grace, and peace to you. This
weekend my heart is filled with gratitude to God! Firstly, I am welcoming Michael Halbrook to Saint Elizabeth Parish, Granite City as Deacon. Dear Deacon Michael, in thanksgiving, “I give thanks to my God at every remembrance of you, praying always with joy in my every prayer for you, because of your partnership for the gospel from the first day until now. I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work in you will continue to complete it until the day of Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 1:3-6).
Secondly, I thank God that I am back to my home away from home! Thank you for your prayers, support, encouragement, and for the gift of faith shared with me and Fr. Iggy who covered me while I was away. Thank you, Fr. Iggy, for your priesthood shared.
It was Thursday, May 13, 2021, when I took the 24hour flight to my biological home in the village of Kahengyere, Nyakyera Town Council in Ntungamo District in a small country called Uganda known as the pearl of Africa. Uganda small as it is (the size of the State of Oregon) is now a home to about 40 million people.
Uganda has always been the pearl of Africa; Winston Churchill popularized the phrase in his book My African Journey (1908). Churchill recounting his journey through lands only just beginning to feel the impact of the West, writes: “For magnificence, for variety of form and color, for profusion of brilliant life - bird, insect, reptile, beast - for vast scale - Uganda is truly the ‘Pearl of Africa’.” Uganda is as a fairy tale, with unique environmental attributes and the moderate climate due to the country's location on the equator.
Well, this is my home, where I spent 30 days of my annual vacation. It felt so good to be with family, interacting with Nephews and Nieces – some who have grown without seeing me, and only to be introduced to them by their parents as “UNCLE FATHER”.
Words are not enough to describe Uganda, and the good feeling you get when you land there, all you need is to see the country for yourself, touch and be touched by the faith of the peoples there.
When I left Uganda on Saturday, June 19, there were
new restrictions announced by the Government of Uganda (due to the new wave of COVID-19) on June 6: All schools closed, communal prayers are suspended, public gatherings are banned, social gatherings must have no more than 20 persons, All inter-district public and private transport is suspended and the curfew (9:00pm-5:30am) remains in place. They need your prayers!
As the gospel relates this weekend, we have two interlocking narratives – the woman with the hemorrhage and the girl’s father, both with a single core: FAITH. They both run to Jesus, much as they are not disciples of Jesus they are satisfied through their faith, that is if they could touch the wellspring of life or be touched by Him there would be restoration of the fullness of life.
Let us pray this weekend that we might have access to Jesus’ heart and healing. Jesus left us the Eucharist, that if we ever had a problem or in need of healing, he is there to help. Jesus Christ challenges us to create a society that values life and rescues people from all forms of death and dying. With our faith let us stir and inflame the hearts of all the peoples, and allow God’s grip on each one of us, so that the God of life who is undying, imperishable can heal us and the world as He calls us to walk in the light of Christ which is life itself.
Together with Christ’s Mission, Fr. Alfred Tumwesigye

With, my Sister Evelyn, and children
It is a little surreal to be writing my first bulletin column as “Deacon” Michael. My heart is overflowing with such a deep sense of gratitude. Over the last 10 days on my Facebook profile, I’ve shared a daily “Top 10” of what I’m grateful for at the conclusion of 6 years of formation. I share the “Top 10” for you here too (in no particular order)…
#10: All who have prayed for my brother candidates and me. It’s been humbling to hear of the constant flow of those who hold us in prayer while in formation.
#9: My brother candidates & classmates… those who have come and gone during our time in formation. We have formed an amazing brotherhood that I know we will carry through the rest of our lives, supporting each other in ministry.
#8: My Pastor-Supervisors from my pastoral formation assignments, Fr. Jeff, Fr. Jeremy (& the Oblates of the Virgin Mary), and Fr. Alfred. I have been blessed with wonderful mentors in how to approach pastoral scenarios in parish life.
#7: The people of the diocese who give so generously to ACSA and now to our parishes to constitute the Parish Community Tithe. Not only has it provided for the formation program, but keeps the beautiful Villa Maria on Lake Springfield, where we gathered for class one weekend a month, open and thriving.
#6: Our Professors & formation team. Our formation team from our diocese saw to every aspect of our formation, and we were blessed with amazing professors, experts in their fields of study, from around the country to teach us everything a few credit hours short of a Masters degree in Pastoral Theology.
#5: The parishioners of my pastoral assignments, who are an inspiration in living out our faith, and doing all that we can to build vibrant parish communities and find ways to reach out to, serve, and evangelize our cities.
#4: My Spiritual Director, Fr. Pat. Only he and Suzanne saw me at a few of the moments when I was frustrated with a class assignment or something else, and ready to throw in the towel. He has also been a wonderful guide in my discernment and in my continued growth in the spiritual life.
#3: My family. Whether it was a weekend when Suzanne needed to be with me at the Villa, or a night when I was out writing a paper and we needed backup to her taxiing the boys from activity to activity – to every other imaginable form of support, Suzanne’s and my whole extended family have been generous and active in helping support us on this journey.
#2: Suzanne & the boys, who have sacrificed the very most to support me in following this call. At the same time, I am eternally grateful for how this journey has enriched our marriage and the faith life of our family. Suzanne absolutely amazes me every minute of every day. THANK YOU to my favorite woman and four boys in all of God’s creation. I love each of you to the moon and back – especially you, my wife, partner, and very best friend, Suzanne.
#1: GOD, who always moves first, always provides, and is always faithful, merciful, and just. It was God’s call that put me on this journey, and God’s love and grace that brought it to this point. Through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, may I always live up to and fulfill the demands of this call and be a humble and gracious servant of Christ, His Church, and His People.
Domine non nissi Te… Lord, nothing if not you. Yours in Christ the Servant, Deacon Michael Halbrook
Join us for a new retreat experience exploring the richness of the Eucharist and the Mass. The retreat will be held at Villa Maria Retreat Center on Lake Springfield, August 6-8. For more information, contact Michael Halbrook: [email protected] or 618-877-3300 x1005.
Our parish sent home “gift” copies of The Search to school families as a summer activity. You can sign up to experience it too. Invite a friend and contact the Parish Office to sign up! It’s as easy as picking up a booklet and watching the videos on FORMED, or joining with or pulling together a small group to go through The Search together. Watch it yourself, as a couple, as a family, and/or invite friends over to watch it with you.
Sun. June 27, July 4 & 18: No gathering July 11-15, 7-9pm: Totus Tuus at St. Elizabeth (high schoolers) July 25: Gathering at St. Elizabeth, 6:30-8pm Rocks and Parents, please join us at Vespers/Adoration for 1 hour 7-8pm on Sunday evenings at St. Elizabeth when we do not have a Gathering. We are planning a group activity in June. Stay tuned! Also, mark your calendars for Totus Tuus July 11-15 – see information earlier in the bulletin. Watch our FB Group (GC Rock Youth Group) or GroupMe for any changes or additions that may come up. Questions? Rita 972-4022, Woody 876-7551, or Dawn 709-3565

The food was fantastic as always and it was nice to be able to gather and enjoy a meal together. Just 3 short months to our next one, so get ready!!

You may visit the parish website or Facebook page to schedule your photo date as well. Photo dates will be August 10-14, 27 and 28. Every family photographed for the directory will receive a copy of the directory and an 8x10 portrait at no cost. So please, sign-up today! ORDINATION OF DEACON MICHAEL HALBROOK- On Saturday June 26, at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Springfield, Bishop Paprocki will ordain our very own Deacon Candidate Michael Halbrook at 10 a.m. In addition to this being livestreamed through dio.org/live, the cathedral is now open to full capacity! You are welcome to attend the ordination in person. Michael will assist at his first Mass as Deacon on Saturday at 4:30pm here at St. Elizabeth and there will be a reception on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at Columbus Home.
RELIGIOUS ITEMS FOR SALE- Some of you may have noticed a new display case in the Harmony Room. In it you will find a number of religious items for sale. Our hope is to expand this very soon to offer this service to our parishioners or others in the community. If you want to look closer or even buy something, please contact the parish office.
PETER’S PENCE COLLECTION- Please prayerfully consider supporting this year’s collection to support the ongoing activities of the Holy See and contribute to the charitable works of the Holy Father on behalf of those who are most in need. 4:40 FOR SEMINARIANS- Six months ago, the diocese launched a campaign called 4:40 for 40 Seminarians. We invited the entire diocese to pray a Hail Mary every day at 4:40 so that, with the help of Mary, we can have 40 men answer the call to be a seminarian for our diocese. If you have been faithfully praying every day, thank you! If you are just hearing about this, we invite you to jump on board. May is the month of Mary and we know with her help, anything is possible! PRAY BIG! BULLETIN SPONSORS- This week we would like to thank Knights of Columbus Tri Cities Council #1098. 618-877-4250
SENIOR LUNCHEON- Thank you to Granite City Mayor Michael Parkinson for coming out to speak with our parishioners who attended the senior luncheon on June 16 in the Harmony Room. Mayor Parkinson shared his vision for the future of Granite City and answered questions for over an hour. THANK YOU- To those who have made additional contributions to this year's Parish Community Tithe (PCT), formerly ACSA, since the latest weekend appeal, THANK YOU! You contributed an additional $3,295 since the weekend appeal. Our balance is currently $3,901. Please prayerfully consider sending in your contribution. Any shortage will come out of regular parish contributions. Forms and stamped-addressed envelopes are available in the Gathering Space and at the Parish Office.
