2012 was a significant year for Attention Homes! Renovation and expansion began on our Runaway & Homeless Youth shelter, our annual Kaleidoscope fundraising bash broke previous attendance and fundraising records, and our Inaugural Sleep Out for Homeless Youth, in conjunction with Homeless & Runaway Youth Awareness Month in November, made for a very busy and successful year.

Attention Homes serves runaway, homeless and at-risk youth who hang precariously from life’s safety net. Over the past 12 months we have increased funding to support our services by 35%, from $441,188 in 2010 to $591,222 in 2012. This is es-pecially significant considering these tough, economic times. Your generosity and volunteer support helps us meet our pro-gram needs as demand for ser-vices continues to grow.

This year’s April Grand Re-Opening of our shelter capped some of our recent history’s most heady times. The 2,200 square foot living space expansion to our 88-year old, north Boulder facility showcases two newly enlarged great rooms, added emergency beds and a big, commercial-style kitchen. Our renovation offers homeless youth more doorways to health, education, employment and added security.

With your support in 2012 we made impactful dif-ferences in many youths’ lives. Eighty-one percent (91 residents) of homeless youth living in our Run-away & Homeless Youth shelter went back home to their families or found long-term housing. Corre-spondingly, youth referred to us by social services living in our Adolescent Residential Care program received emotional and behavioral support in a safe, structured, home-like setting.

In 2012 we provided 558 unduplicated youth with 8,869 days and/or nights of shelter and residential care throughout the agency. It appears we are on a pace to serve an even higher number of at-risk youth in 2013.

It is vital we engage with you and the larger com-munity to help solve youth homelessness issues by providing transitional and permanent housing services. Boulder’s lack of real affordable housing, prices many people out of the local housing mar-

ket, especially young people. Attention Homes, other agen-cies like ours and local housing agencies are working to fix this problem.

Attention Homes is working in common cause with state, county and other local strategic efforts to end youth homeless-ness. We are using the State of Colorado’s Pathways, our City and County’s Ten Year Advisory Homelessness Group, Boulder County’s 10 Year Plan Advisory

Board and the City of Boulder’s housing data along with other best practice initiatives, to develop ser-vice options to help eliminate youth homelessness. Help us open more doors and achieve this grand goal. We can do it together!

Attention Homes provides opportunities for at-risk youth to change their lives. We offer shelter, community-based living and teaching of life skills necessary for an independent future.

Our goals are to help youth:

• Build behavioral, emotional and career-related pathways for success• Reunite with their families• Become self-sufficient

Accomplishments

In 2012, we set aggressive goals to forward the mission of our organization to help youth. Here is what we accomplished last year:

Served 530 unduplicated youth in the Runaway & Homeless Youth program in 2012, an increase of 171% over the total number of youth served in 2011

Commenced renovation and expansion of our Run-away & Homeless Youth shelter to more efficiently and safely meet the needs of the homeless population

Raised $617,000 to fully fund the renovation and expan-sion of the Runaway & Homeless Youth shelter

Increased overnight emergency shelter services to youth up to age 21

Ensured every resident in our Adolescent Residential Care program was enrolled in an educational program or school

Achieved every projected outcome goal in the Adoles-cent Residential Care program

Enlarged the size of our board to better extend our com-munity reach and representation of client needs

Increased organizational giving to almost $600,000 in 2012 from $422,000 in 2011 to help fund growing pro-grams

Implemented our Inaugural Sleep Out for Homeless Youth event

At Attention Homes, we help kids succeed!

After living in a series of foster homes, treatment facilities and detention centers, I had given up and started doing drugs. I was placed by social services with Attention Homes after I left rehab. The staff here helped me stay off drugs and develop healthy behaviors to deal with my issues. I was eventually placed with a really great foster family and now I try to be a role model to my younger siblings. With-out Attention Homes, I’d probably be living on the streets. Adolescent Residential Care Program Review

Our RES program served 28 unduplicated youth in 2012 and achieved the following outcomes:

• 29 or 83% of residents who lived in the program 3 days or longer (35 residents) demonstrated improvement in target behaviors

• 26 or 96% of residents who lived in the program 30 days or longer (27 residents) demonstrated life skills improvement

• 24 or 89% of residents who lived in the program 30 days or longer (27 residents) and needed educational assistance had a 94% or higher attendance rate at an accredited education, GED program or trade school

I was a messed-up kid with lots of problems. When I got to Attention Homes the staff worked

really hard to get me straight. They showed me how to deal with my anger at my biological and

foster parents. The counselors helped me enroll in school and taught me better study habits. My

caseworker was always with me making sure I followed the rules and attended my counseling

sessions. I can’t imagine where I’d be without Attention Homes.

Attention Homes’ Adolescent Residential Care (RES) program offers a safe, structured, home-like setting to at-risk youth, ages 12-17, placed through social services departments as a result of family disruption or other crises.

Provide abused, neglected and troubled youth placed through social services with residential, behavioral and case management services that prepare them for long-term success.

Our RHY program served 530 unduplicated youth in 2012, an increase of 171% over the total number of youth served in the RHY program in 2011, and achieved the following outcomes.

Reduce youth homelessness through building trust and establishing positive relationships with them; increase access to services that move teens and young adults from living on the streets or in the shelter towards stable, long-term housing and/or family reunification.

When I got to Attention Homes, I was on probation and had a lot of court appointments. Each week I was taking multiple random drug screening tests, meeting with my probation officer, going to county substance abuse groups and to drug court to report my progress and performing resultant community service work. With Attention Homes’ help, I remained sober, encouraged my peers to make good choices, attended school and all of my probation, drug court and substance abuse group appointments. Now I’m back at my Grandmother’s house and making her, and myself, real proud. – Nicki

When I was 15, my mom died and left me with my two younger siblings. I tried hard to keep my family together, but I couldn’t and social services placed me with Attention Homes. 2012 was a remarkable year for Attention Homes in terms of new volunteers, expanded programs and unbounded generosity. From individuals and families to corporate teams, service clubs and faith communities, our programs grew in response to this groundswell of community support. Over 400 individuals (including 24 groups) performed over 6,000 hours of community service!

$10,000 funds 800 hours of case management for access to education, employment, health care and long-term, safe housing

$5,000 funds four (4) months or 5,500 units of food in our shelter program – 2,500 overnight shelter meals, 2,160 day drop-in meals and 840 street outreach food units

$2,500 funds ten (10) nights of overnight emergency shelter to ten (10) youth, including food, clothing, shelter, case management and supervision

$1,000 funds one (1) 24-hour period of day drop-in for 25 youth, overnight emergency shelter for ten (10) youth and street outreach to 20+ youth contacts

$500 funds ten (10) one-hour life skills training sessions

Volunteer Opportunities

Serve on our street outreach team

Mentor or tutor youth on homework

Teach life skills such as cooking and budgeting

Speak on virtues such as respect and honesty

Coordinate recreational activities such as basketball and art projects

Teach classes such as dance, computer science or music

Make meals and eat with the kids

Manage and supervise kitchen activities

Volunteers may work directly with the youth, serve on our board and commit-tees, and help with administrative work, building maintenance, cooking, fundrais-ing and providing professional skills.
