“The National Day of Prayer’s four-step approach to effective communication with God is simple, practical, and biblical. Prayer is not simply saying words. It is not repeating formulas. God is looking for heartfelt relationship.

God says to continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it with thanksgiving (Colossians 4:2). We ought always to pray and not lose heart (Luke 18:1). Pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17). Watch therefore and pray always (Luke 21:36).

We pray because…We love God. We depend on God. We need to resist temptation. We need to invite God to act in salvation. God commands us to pray. President Franklin Roosevelt called for our nation to unite in prayer – O Lord, give us faith. Give us faith in Thee.

And he said, The things which are impossible with men are possible with God. Luke 18:27

RESPONSIBILITIES We all have them. But we don’t all take them as seriously as we ought to. Wouldn’t it be great, though, if we all took responsibility for the things we are responsible for? Wouldn’t it be great if you took responsibility for everything you’re responsible for? It’s time to stop the finger-pointing and excuse-making and to remove the “ir” in irresponsible. In this 4-part series, Andy Stanley tells us it’s time to ask ourselves, “Am I taking responsibility for my life . . . REALLY?”

Session titles: 1. Let the Blames Begin 2. The Disproportionate Life 3. This Is No Time to Pray 4. Embracing Your Response Ability

When: Every Wednesday in May at 7:00 PM Light supper/snack included Where: Deep Creek Fellowship Hall

*See Angie Brendle for more information.

The Lord is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation; this is my God, and I will praise him. Exodus 15:2

“This verse is what Christian music band Caleb’s Crossing puts into every note.” Their music style is a combination of Country and Southern Gospel. The band, formed in January 2011, includes Todd Chrisco, Jonathan Jessup, and Matt Lineback. They are each gifted musicians playing several instruments as well as vocals. They are “passionate about music that presents God’s hope to the listener.” The group has performed at several churches in the area and we look forward to having them at Deep Creek.

It is the duty of nations, as well as men, to owe their dependence upon the overruling power of God.

The Five Finger Prayer

1. Your thumb is the nearest to you, so begin your prayers by praying

for those closest to you. They are the easiest to remember. To pray for our loved ones is a sweet duty.

2. The next finger is the pointing finger. Pray for those who teach, instruct and heal. This includes teachers, doctors and ministers. They need support and wisdom in pointing others in the right direction. Keep them in your prayers.

3. The next finger is the tallest finger. It reminds us of our leaders. Pray for our president, leaders in business and industry, and administrators. These people shape our nation and guide public opinion. They need God’s guidance.

4. The fourth finger is our ring finger. Surprising to many is the fact that this is our weakest finger, as any piano teacher will testify. It should remind us to pray for those who are weak, in trouble or pain. Also pray for Christian marriage to last till death. They need your prayers day and night. You cannot pray too much for them.

5. And last comes our little finger, the smallest finger of all which is where we should place ourselves in relation to God and others. As the Bible says, The least shall be the greatest among you. Your pinkie finger should remind you to pray for yourself. By the time you have prayed for the other four groups, your own needs will be put into proper perspective and you will be able to pray for yourself more effectively.

VBS Offering to Help Kids at Collide Church

A new church just begun by Nicholas Poindexter, who grew up in Deep Creek

From Nick: Thank you to all of our friends and family at Deep Creek Friends for your encouragement and prayers for Collide Church! During our first month of services we have already seen God move in amazing ways... Not only has our Worship space been full every week, but more importantly we've also had guests indicate faith in Jesus for the first time! Praise God! Not only that, but our Collide Kids area is busting at the seams as well. One way we would like to alleviate some if their space issues is by purchasing a small playground set to install in our back lot. We are so thankful for churches like Deep Creek who understand the need for church planting and want to help out! Thanks so much for considering Collide Church for your VBS offering! Our kids ministry will be forever grateful for your generosity!

See Children’s page for more VBS details.

On May 10, Janet and Leon Robbins will be at the Unifi building beside McDonalds in Yadkinville to help sort the food as the mail carriers drop it off. If you would like to volunteer to help sort cans for YCM, please meet us at Unifi at 2:00 PM. If you have question, please call Janet at 336-971-1212. Thanks so much! Janet

¢hange for Turkana The children of the Primary and Middler Sunday School Classes are excited that you are helping them help children in this poor section of Kenya. They have learned that one of the few ways to generate income in that desert area is basket weaving. However, the supplies are very hard to come by. Your pocket change can make a big difference in the life of a family at this mission. The children enjoy collecting your change on 2nd and 4th Sundays.

Craig Shore is Heading to Uganda

Craig continues to make preparations for a mission trip to Uganda with the organization, SixtyFeet. It’s not long until June 22-28 and he still needs prayers and additional financial support between $1,000 to $1,500. He will be getting shots this month and would like to have any financial assistance turned in by June 1.

Craig says “If anybody would like to follow my online journal of the mission trip it can be found at: http://thornbroquaker.tumblr.com/.”

April was a good month at Deep Creek. The DOGS and Youth groups continued with their regular monthly meetings.

In preparation for our summer activities, we began a new study on the 12 Disciples of Christ. We first looked at Andrew, Peter, James and John. These are the disciples we see the most and see in the limelight the most. We observed the bold and rash behavior of Peter that often led him to trouble. We observed the quiet leadership style of Andrew and how he valued the individual. We also looked at the passion of James to find the truth and the love that John had for Christ. Looking at the personalities of 12 regular men that were among the innermost circle of Christ's followers has always fascinated me. It is so clear that the works they were able to do were because of Christ. They were extremely average men who completed tasks that were completely contrary to their nature. The power of God to take us as we are and use our personalities in the right places and times is simply amazing!

We also gathered on Good Friday to see the movie: God's Not Dead. This was an awesome time together in fellowship. It is encouraging to see more Christian based movies hitting the box office and doing fairly well!

The youth performed an Easter skit at our annual Easter Egg Hunt. They are always willing participants to show the message of Christ to the younger folks in our meeting.

I continue to be blessed at Deep Creek Friends! Blessings, Jared

Kaylee Shore In all-County Chorus

Kaylee Shore received the honor to be chosen as one of five students from Boonville Elementary School to be a member of the Elementary All-County Chorus. Students are selected on their musical singing abilities. They must also be willing to put in extra after school practice time to learn new music. The final all-day event included musical instruction by guest director, Libby Brown, formerly at Forbush High School, and a beautiful evening performance on the stage of Willingham Theater at Yadkin Cultural Arts Center April 15.

It doesn’t take much for a child to get the attention of a grandparent, but evidentially Charles Reece’s performance caught the eye of a reporter for the Winston-Salem Journal. Tony and Geneva Reece didn’t even notice anything special about the Sunday paper until a phone call sparked their interest. According to Grandmother Geneva, “Charles Daniel is on the front page of the Journal”. The largest picture on the front of Sunday’s Journal, April 27, was titled “Honorable role” and showed Scout member, Daniel Reece working as volunteer directing bus traffic at MerleFest. According to the article, the Scouts are the first and last people you will see at the festival which makes a long tiring day for a Boy Scout. The Wilkes County Scout’s white busses have shuttled attenders, for donations as a fundraiser, since 1988 when they began with one activity bus - now 13. Charles is a serious Scout and has earned the “Order of the Arrow”. He is a member of Troup 335 from First United Methodist Church in North Wilkesboro.

Trevor Collins, Skyler Raines and Jacob Brendle, in all-county band

Trevor Collins, a student at Starmount Middle School and Skyler Raines and Jacob Brendle, students at Forbush Middle School were chosen to perform in All-County Band on Friday, April 11, during Evening of The Arts, held at Forbush Middle School. Students are chosen by their Band Director based on their playing abilities. This year's guest clinician for All-County Band was Daniel Jarvis who is currently the band director at West Stokes High School. Mr. Jarvis graduated from the University of Kentucky in 2007 and has served as assistant director or lead band director of several middle and high schools, but has spent the past two years in Stokes County. The youth in the band practiced only five hours that day before performing three songs titled: Celtic Air and Dance, The Quest and Kilauea. They did a wonderful job performing these songs. Jacob plays flute, Trevor and Skyler play percussion. All three students plan to continue in band next year at high school.

Leon Robbins CeLebRates speCiaL biRthday On April 10, Leon Robbins reached the Big 5-0, as described by wife Janet. Most Sundays during worship, Leon is in the sound room making sure everyone can hear what is being said. Occasionally, if something doesn’t go right, he just can’t resist adding a little humor to the situation. We guess God is smiling too. He also takes the trash to the landfill on Mondays. Thanks Leon for what you do and Happy 50th Birthday. The sneeds CelebraTe milestone AnniversAry Allen and Wilma Sneed celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary on April 16. We wish you many more.

Congratulations Continued

Bill Terrell’s nephew has win aT MerlefesT Joseph Terrell, nephew of Bill and Donna Terrell and son of Bill's brother Tom, won the General Category for Original Songs Competition at MerleFest. Many hundreds of people from across the country submitted videos of their original songs for this competition. There were four categories of music. Five finalists in each category were selected to compete at the festival. Joseph was selected as a finalist in the "general" category, and on Friday, April 25, performed his song "Angelina Jane is Long Gone" and won! All of the Terrell family and friends are very proud of this noteworthy accomplishment. Joseph, a gifted song writer, plays guitar and is the leader of the group Mipso, which plays in the folk tradition with bluegrass and Appalachian influences. Mipso started out in the Chapel Hill area and soon became a local music sensation. This past year they toured in Japan and China. He is a lifelong member of Springfield

Friends, and many of his songs have religious themes, often with a clear Quaker influence. On Sunday, Tommy Shore recounted how he had known Tom Terrell from Quaker Lake Camp as kids. Joseph, following in his father’s footsteps, went to Quaker Lake for many summer camps. He also falls right into the musical Terrell family, playing his instrument beside Uncle Bill, Uncle Richard and Grandmother Eldora. He learned from a whole family that sings the blessing before their meal and taught Bill and Richard’s dog, Tater, to sing, even to perform for the elderly at Friends Homes. Bill is honored to count himself as one of Joseph's musical influences growing up. Congratulations Joseph!! NOTE FROME THE EDITOR: Next month’s Encourager will include, in addition to the graduates, any students who have received end-of-year special honors, recognitions, awards or any other accomplishments. Please share the information with us.

I recall a time when my son was about 18 months old…I had him strapped in a backpack and was rushing to catch the bus. Apparently I miss-stepped and fell down an entire flight of stairs, (13 to be exact). I was bruised, bleeding and I had torn my jeans…but my main concern was, naturally for my child. My fears were alleviated though when from behind me I heard a gleeful giggle followed by, “Again!” Source Unknown ----- Remember Mother’s Day
