ACADEMY OF THEATRE ARTS (SUMMER 2013)

BLACK ARTS FESTIVAL (JULY 2013)

elcome to the 85th season at the Kalamazoo Civic Theatre! As a society

we make a big deal out of milestone birthdays. We congratulate each other onmaking it to the next stage oflife, reflect on our successes, examine our failures and checkon the status of our bucket list.It is a human rite of passage ofsorts and truly a reason to celebrate. As an organization,I guess it is no different.Eighty-five years in business issomething that we should beproud of and grateful for all at the same time. We have produced consistent qualitytheatre for our community inwartime and in peacetime, through the great depression and great recession and through the New Deal and the newmillennium. We have represented Kalamazooregionally, nationally and internationally intheatre competitions and helped to start stateand national organizations that support community theatre. And after all of these yearswe still hold our ranking as one of the top 5community theatres out of 7,000 in this greatnation. The Civic continues to offer opportunitiesfor our community to come together and producequality theatre for all ages each season.

In 1942, the Kalamazoo Civic Theatrepartnered with the Kalamazoo Public Schoolsto offer drama classes and theatre productionsfor school aged children in our county. Sincethat time, eight generations have had theopportunity to learn and grow from the programming that grew out of this partnership. We are now in our second successful year ofthe Academy of Theatre Arts that has expandedour opportunities to include theatre lovers fromages 3 to 103! And this fall, we have expandedour offerings again to include classes and

workshops for the theatre enthusiast. We recognize that not everyone who loves the Civicand theatre necessarily wants to be on stage.

Personally, as one who has adeep and abiding appreciationfor theatre and design anddirection, but has not beenbitten by the acting bug, I was thrilled to hear that Nicki Poer, our Director ofEducation and Outreach, wasplanning classes for the theatre enthusiast. We havenew programming called“Second Friday” a workshopdesigned to give you a behind the scenes look at aparticular production as well as the design and directorial

choices that went into the realization of thatproduction. This workshop includes a ticket andbackstage tour for the matinee performance. We also have a class that Dr. Patrick Coyle will be teaching which will broaden your knowledge and appreciation of musical theatre. You will hear the history, stories and possibly some gossip on all of the big hits on Broadway today.

These additions to our programming reallyround out the offerings for our fall curriculum. Youcan check out our programming for all ages onour website at www.KazooCivic.com/education.Don’t forget we have scholarships available for all ages, discounts for season subscribers, and family and multi-class discounts. Theseare just some of the ways we try to make theAcademy accessible to all. I hope you’ll give theAcademy a try. It is a great way to meet newfriends, give your students an opportunity tolearn new skills, and who knows maybe evencheck something off your bucket list. – KC
