Eastern Health offers 2 pathways to experience a Mental Health Graduate Nurse Program. The first option is known as

the P (Pure) Mental Health Program. The second option is known as the PG (blended) General Nursing/Mental Health

Program.

The P stream is designed for the novice nurse who sees themselves developing their career specifically as a mental

health nurse. This program is designed to consolidate and broaden their experience and knowledge of mental

health. This stream allows for graduate nurses to experience 3 clinical rotations within different areas and age

spectrums of mental health. Graduates enrolled in this stream can also request to rotate through specialized areas such

as the adolescent mental health inpatient unit, the AOD detoxification and short term support unit (Wellington House)

and also rotations are available to Eastern Health’s mental health community care units.

The PG stream combined program is designed for novice nurses who want to further explore both a mental health

rotation as well as a rotation within the general nursing setting. This program gives graduates an opportunity to

experience both mental health and general nursing (6 month rotation in each) and is a suitable program for graduates

who would like to further consolidate skills in both of these areas or for those who remain undecided about their career

path.

Formal agreements for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) have been established with a number of universities in order

to support all novice learners who have completed a mental health transition to practice pathway. Completion of a

Mental Health Graduate Nurse Program also allows eligibility to Eastern Health’s Mental Health Post Graduate Nurse

Program which has been designed to support nurses through their post graduate studies and offer further clinical

experience into a variety of mental health community settings including: Mobile Support and Treatment Team, Spectrum

Statewide Service, Community Care Unit and several other clinical areas.

Eastern Health offers 2 Graduate Midwifery Programs. The first option is known as the Pure stream Midwifery Program.

The second option is known as the Blended Midwifery/Nursing Program.

The Pure stream Graduate Midwifery program is 12 months in duration. This option is designed to offer experience in

Ante Natal Clinic, Birth Suite, Post Natal Ward, and Special Care Nursery as well as supernumerary time in the Fetal

Monitoring Unit, Extended Post Natal Care and Lactation Services. Our Pure Stream gives the Midwifery Graduate at

Eastern Health experience across their full scope of practice and is offered at The Angliss and Box Hill Hospitals.

The Blended Graduate Midwifery /Nursing Program is available for those with a double degree in Nursing and Midwifery

and is 18 months in duration. It includes experience in all of the same areas as Pure Midwifery, plus a 6 month surgical

nursing rotation. The Midwifery component is offered at The Angliss and Box Hill Hospitals. The nursing component is

offered at The Angliss, Box Hill or Maroondah Hospitals.

The intake for Pure Midwifery is January, and in our Blended Program there is a January and July intake.

We pride ourselves on our kind and supportive approach to our Graduates while encouraging them to grow in their

confidence, independence and ability throughout the program.
