The Sohar Refinery Improvement Project (SRIP) is a multibillion dollar capital investment for Orpic. The project is in response to the need to upgrade refining capability in order to further maximize the value of Omani crude oil. At the same time it will significantly improve environmental performance on the back of the recent progress made by Orpic’s Environmental Improvement Program (EIP). The Environmental Permits for SRIP were issued in July 2013, and in terms of citing the project, land agreements SRIP Orpic’s fuels production will increase by 70%. From the fuels perspective this increase will answer the continuing growth of fuel consumption in the country, which has grown by 10% annually over the past 5 years. At the same time, the feedstock need for Aromatics and Polypropylene Plants will be met, and with the increased supply of naphtha, Orpic will be able to reduce naphtha purchases from 75% of its total requirement down to 25%. The product range will be expanded, with Orpic producing bitumen for the first time, primarily used to manufacture asphalt, and in increasing demand in the Sultanate for infrastructural projects.

Aside from the immediate commercial benefits that SRIP brings to the business, it will have an impact in other areas as well. 300 direct, permanent jobs will be created by SRIP, as well as around 2,400 Omani contract roles over the project lifetime. In the region of 900 indirect jobs will be generated by the multiplier effect SRIP will have on the local economy. In-Country value is an integral part of SRIP and substantial local business participation has been written into the project.

Development plans are underway to include major projects with an expected value of USD 9.5 billion. Through these projects the company aims to improve environmental performance and extract greater value for its business.

Strategic Growth Projects

The Muscat Sohar Pipeline Project (MSPP) will connect our Mina Al Fahal and Sohar Refineries by means of a 280 kms bi-directional, multi-purpose pipeline to an intermediate distribution and storage facility at Al Jifnain, as well as a new storage facility at Muscat International Airport, which will receive aviation fuel directly from the pipeline. The project is due to be commissioned in 2017.The first of its kind to be constructed in Oman, it will remove the need for Orpic to ship and truck refined products. Not only will it bring a new level of efficiency and lower costs to its business, it will reduce the number of fuel-tank truck journeys in and around Muscat. Heavy fuel-tank truck traffic in Muscat is expected to drop by 70%. MSPP will help ensure the safe, continuous and environmentally friendly supply of a range of fuels to meet rapidly growing local demand.

Liwa Plastics Industries Complex is a transformational project that will improve Orpic’s product mix and business model, double its profit and support the development of a downstream plastics industry in Oman. Taking advantage of the growing global market for plastics, it will create new business opportunities and employment in Oman, and firmly reinforce Orpic as a significant player in the international petrochemicals marketplace. In terms of numbers, the construction phase of LPIC will require up to 7,000 Full Time Equivalents (FTEs).Once the project has been completed in 2020, it is anticipated that 350 operators will be required to manage the facilities, as well as 150 technicians. The indirect employment effect is expected to create more than 1,2000 jobs. Also, the plastics production will have increased by 1 million tonnes, giving Orpic a total of 1.4 million tonnes of polyethylene and polypropylene production by 2020.

We undertook a comprehensive plan for environmental improvement in coordination with the Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs and Sohar Environmental Unit that aimed to implement a number of projects related to the reduction of air emissions and emitted odors through three main areas as the following:

Reducing Air Emissions from Refinery Operations

New systems were utilized to reduce emitted odors and volatile gases which have been successfully implemented. SO2 emissions from the wet gas scrubber unit were reduced by more than 90%. This resulted in a dramatic decrease in the number of complaints received from the community by more than 85% compared to previous years. Also achieving lower burn rates from the main Flare and 60% decrease in Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) leaking from pumps, valves and equipment.

Industrial Waste Management

Orpic invested in the field of managing the industrial waste which generated from its operations through:• Reduce the Amount of Industrial Waste• Reuse the Waste after Disposing all Damaged Materials• Recycle the Waste by Local Companies• Allocate Store to Receive Industrial Waste (hazardous and non- hazardous). The store follows all

standards and requirements issued by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs.

Improving Wastewater Treatment Operations and Reducing Emitted Odors.

New effective systems used to alleviate odors and reduce the concentration of volatile gases. These systems achieved the desired results and that reflected positively on the surrounding community, through the reduction in the number of complaints related to odors.

Environmental Quality Control CenterThe Company has recently established an Environmental Quality Control Center which demonstrates all information and indicators related to environmental monitoring devices including air monitoring units and flame emissions monitoring devices which can provide employees an easy access to air quality and emissions data which help them to identify the source of odors and respond to any inquiries and complaints. It is worth mentioning that Orpic pursued a policy of transparency in presenting and updating the air quality and emissions data through a direct update on Orpic website.

The Mobile Unit As part of the Environmental Quality Control Center, Orpic launched the mobile unit which aims to monitor the air quality in the surrounding areas and determine the concentration of odors that is emitted.

Environmental Improvement Project: Stemming from our values of putting safety and the environment first, Orpic places utmost priority on its people, plants, environment and local communities. We work together to ensure that we create and maintain safe working environments, with a clear target of zero harm. We recognize our responsibility towards the environment and hence measure, manage and minimize the environmental impact of our operations.
