About the Work

Ubi Caritas has been one of my most performed and popular pieces since it was written in 2001, and I am thrilled that the work is now available for American choirs through Walton Music. As with Maurice Durufle’s beautiful Ubi Caritas from 1960, this setting also draws inspiration from the Gregorian chant tradition. While reflective of the chant style, this composition is entirely original and is not based on any existing chants.

Ubi Caritas received its North American premiere at the 2007 ACDA National Convention in Miami, where it was performed by the exciting new Swedish professional choir Voces Nordicae. The piece is dedicated to this outstanding ensemble and its wonderful conductor, Lone Larsen. – Ola Gjeilo

Ubi caritas et amor, Deus ibi est. Where charity and love are, God is there. Congregavit nos in unum Christi amor. The love of Christ has gathered us together. Exsultemus et in ipso jucundemur. Let us rejoice and be glad in it. Timeamus et amemus Deum vivum. Let us revere and love the living God. Et ex corde diligamus nos sincero. And from a sincere heart let us love one another.Amen. Amen.

About the Composer

Composer and pianist Ola Gjeilo was born in Norway in 1978 and moved to the United States in 2001 to begin his composition studies at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he currently resides.

Ola’s recordings include the Decca Classics albums Ola Gjeilo (2016) and Winter Songs (2017), featuring Tenebrae, Voces8, and the Choir of Royal Holloway. His choral and piano works are published by Walton Music, while his wind band works are published by Boosey & Hawkes. Richard Proulx (1937–2010) enjoyed a distinguished career as an organist and a conductor, as well as the composer or editor of nearly 400 published works. After serving congregations in his hometown of Saint Paul, Minnesota, and Seattle, Washington, Proulx directed an exemplary music program at Chicago’s Holy Name Cathedral from 1980 until 1994.

Prior to his death, Proulx and Saint John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota, made arrangements for the establishment of the Richard Proulx Collection in the university’s Alcuin Library. The collection contains hundreds of Proulx’s manuscripts, the majority of which were written for his weekly work at Holy Name Cathedral.

Select pieces from this collection will be made available by GIA Publications, Inc. in the Richard Proulx Legacy Series. GIA is also committed to releasing a number of revised editions of Proulx’s compositions, ensuring that choirs and congregations will sing his music for many years to come.

NotesThe beautiful translation of the hymn “Crux fidelis” (found in The Roman Missal) inspired this setting for use during The Adoration of the Holy Cross on Good Friday. The piece may be sung in a verse-refrain form, with the cantors leading the verses and the choir and assembly singing the refrains. I have also included a simple chant for The Showing of the Holy Cross (“Behold the wood of the Cross…”), which precedes the Adoration. The simple instrument parts are for C instrument and cello. In addition to Good Friday, “Faithful Cross” can be part of the liturgy for Palm Sunday and for feast days of the Holy Cross, particularly the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross (September 14).

PERFORMANCE NOTES

The Exsultet, or Easter Proclamation, is a venerable part of the Roman rite’s Vigil of Easter.According to the rubrics, the singing of this chant is assigned to the deacon. If there is nodeacon, a priest may sing it. The rubrics of the Sacramentary indicate: “If necessary, the Easterproclamation may be sung by one who is not a deacon. In this case, the bracketed words Mydearest friends up to the end of the introduction are omitted, as is the greeting The Lord bewith you.”

This setting of the Easter Proclamation uses the text of the Roman Sacramentary and thatvolume’s adaptation of the traditional chant.

The majority of the text is carried by one or two soloists. As the Sacramentary indicates,Cantor 1 should be deacon or priest. For the sake of contrast, Cantor 2 may be sung by a woman.If a deacon or priest does not sing Cantor 1, use a male voice, but make the omissions requiredby the Sacramentary (indicated in this edition by brackets).

The choir acts as a foundation for and backdrop to the chant of the cantors, using three devicesfrom medieval practice:

a) Ison: singing a sustained tone underneath the chant;

b) Organum: the choir singing in perfect fifths around the chant; and

c) Murmur: singing with the cantor, but “sotto voce,” barely audible.

In order for this to be edifying and practical, the choir must:

a) sing with straight tone. It will be impossible to tune unisons or parallel fifths with conflicting vibrato.

b) serve as a backdrop to the cantor. The choir’s role is to highlight and extend the chant, not to be the focus.

This setting works best when the choir is standing in close proximity to the paschal candle andthe cantors. Distance tends to make the chord changes inaccurate.

Since the Proclamation serves as a transition for the assembly from the Service of Light to theLiturgy of the Word, it does not end in a loud fashion. The climax (musically) is the sectionwhich begins “This is the night…” After these sections, the choir pulls back, ending the chantquietly, as it was begun.
