we strive for the best
Olympic Rings Last Friday saw the 2016 version of our on-going school endeavours to
form human designs on the oval. After the success of the 50 in 2014 and
the giant heart last year, it was decided to attempt the very tricky Olympic
Ring configuration to coincide with the Rio Olympics.
Students came dressed in their house colours, whilst the black ring was
made up of staff, who donned all black clothing for the day. Money was
raised from this free dress for improved school facilities.
Thanks to Mr Smith, Mrs Cridland and the Student Council for another
successful photo opportunity.

Friday 29th July provided near perfect conditions for Athletics Day. As always, it was great to see
high participation rates from our students. It is one of the few times each year when our entire
school is visible together for one occasion. On Monday and Tuesday we then hosted the Mackay
District carnival. Well done to all our students who competed in these events and congratulations to
those students who were successful in gaining selection for the Mackay District team.
The individual results for the 2016 National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy
(NAPLAN) tests were sent home with Year 7 and 9 students on Monday. Overall, our students
performed very well this year. NAPLAN results provide a useful point-in-time snapshot of a student’s
achievement in a number of areas. These results can be used to determine the progress, or relative
gain, for each student over a two year period. It is important that you speak to your student’s
teachers if you have any concerns about their progress in class. Thank you to all our staff for the
ongoing encouragement and education of our students.
This week a long serving teacher in the Mackay North High community announced his retirement.
On behalf of all past and present Mackay North staff and students, I would like to wish Mr John
Drzewicki all the very best. John has been a dedicated and enthusiastic part of the North High team
and I thank him for his contributions to the school.
On Friday we celebrated the beginning of the Olympic Games with a colourful display of the Olympic
rings on our school oval. Thank you to the staff and senior students who assisted in getting
everyone together for another great North High event.
During the week we were shocked and saddened to hear of the loss of our Pioneer SHS colleague,
Mick Nixon. Mick was husband to our Pedagogy Head of Department, Bronwyn, and father to Jim,
Jess, and current students, Sarah and Ellie. The unwavering support of the North High community
for this family has been unbelievable. Thank you everyone for your assistance and understanding
during this difficult time.
I would also like to acknowledge the support we have received from the CQ Region and our
neighbouring schools, Mackay Northern Beaches SHS, Mackay SHS, Mirani SHS and Sarina SHS
during this time – what a wonderful state schooling extended family.

Anzac Experience 25 July On Monday 25 July, 20 Year 9 students attended the opening ceremony for the Mackay Anzac
Spirit Experience at the MECC. Our school was the only one to be invited to the official opening
and the students were the very first people in Mackay to go through the exhibition.
The behaviour displayed by the students was exemplary and they received very positive com-
ments from the official guest who attended the function.
All the students found the exhibition very interesting and it was a struggle to actually get them
out of the display to get the bus back to school.
PARENTS OF ALL YEAR TEN STUDENTS.
To complete the process of Subject Selections for Yr 11 2017, Yr 10 students and their
Guardians are required to have an interview with a member of staff to ensure students have
made the best selection of subjects for themselves. This will then give them the chance to
achieve their goals for the end of school, as well as one of the goals for senior at North
which is ..”to enable students to understand the world around them and the talents within
them so that they can become fulfilled individuals and active and compassionate citizens.”
To make an appointment for Interview could you read the information letter below which ex-
plains how to go about making a booking with the staff member of your choice on the 30th or
31st of August. On these two days Yr 10 students are given study days, where they remain
away from school and are able to attend their interview with you.
We encourage you to make your booking early, as this will ensure you will get your preferred
teacher and your preferred timeslot.
The interviews will be conducted in the library on the Tuesday and Wednesday in August.

JUNIOR SECONDARY NEWS Year 8 Subject Selections for Term 4
The focus of Junior Secondary elective subjects is for students to taste test a variety of subjects so that students are able to make informed choices in Year 9. In Year 8 this year students have each completed one term of Music, Manual Arts and Information, Technology and Business (ITB). Next Wednesday 17th August students in Year 8 will take part in a subject selection assembly and will then select one term four elective from either Drama, Design Technologies or Coding and Robotics using a numbered preference system. Students who are currently part of Music Excellence or Art Excellence will not select a term four elective as they will continue in their excellence program for the remainder of the year. We encourage parents to have a discussion with students regarding which subject would be best for them prior to next Wednesday 17th August. Students should consider their personal strengths, interests and results in similar subjects that they have undertaken this year. Please note that it is a possibility that not all students will get their first preference for term four due to timetable constraints and students numbers. A brief subject description is provided below.
In the middle of term four students will select their year 9 subjects for 2017. Parents and students will receive more information regarding these subject selections closer to the time and each student will receive a Junior Secondary Curriculum Guide which will contain information about all of the elective subjects available for selection. This subject selection process will be completed online at home and is a process that parents and students should undertake together. If you have any questions regarding subject selections for Term 4 please contact Junior Secondary HOD, Rebecca Cooper.
NAPLAN 2016
Students in year 7 and year 9 will have received an individual report of their 2016 NAPLAN results earlier this week. We encourage parents to review these results with their student.
Year 7 in 2017
A reminder that scholarship applications for students coming in to Year 7 in 2017 close on the 26
th August. More information about Junior Secondary scholarships can be found on our school
website.
Subject Description
Drama Students will be involved in activities involving clowning, improvisation, characterisation, mask making, story telling and dance drama. Students will prepare a polished improvisation/acting story using the mask they have created and incorporating music. This subject is an excellent choice for students who are interested in the performing arts and who enjoy acting, dance, drama and music. Drama will serve as an excellent lead into Year 9 Drama; Year 9 Music and/or Year 9 Dance.
Design Technol-ogies
This is a subject that the Manual Arts Faculty is running to introduce students to Design Tech-nologies. Students will use a range of traditional tools mixed with computer-operated machines to manufacture projects. The course will focus on making two projects. The first project will be a chess-board style cutting board manufactured in 400 block using traditional hand tools. The second project will an acrylic name plaque that the students design, model and program to have cut out on the Laser. This subject is a great choice for all our hands on learners who are interested in designing and making projects. Design Technologies will serve as an excellent lead into Year 9 STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths), Year 9 Wood Design
Coding and Ro-botics
In this course students will investigate how digital games are made as well as aspects of writ-ing code for games made in Scratch. Students will learn how computers work using basic cod-ing concepts and how to design and develop a digital game and interactive stories. This sub-ject is well suited to students who have an interest in technology, robotics, coding and comput-ers. Coding and Robotics will serve as a good lead into Year 9 STEM, Digital Technologies and Business subjects.
REMINDER if you are unwell at school—What do I do if….
…I become unwell or am injured while at school:
In class, inform your teacher who will send you to the Junior or Senior hub with a note. Outside the classroom, you are to report to the Junior Secondary or Senior Secondary Student hub. The Junior or Senior hub staff will phone your parents.
You will not phone your parents to make arrangements to go home.
FAREWELL MR DRZEWICKI
The career of a Mackay North State High School institution came to an end this week. John
Drzewicki, a much-loved part of the Social Science and English team, has taught at our
school since 1979. Students will remember his penchant for long stories and non-negotiable
behaviour expectations. Staff will remember the same penchant for telling long stories, his
irreverent sense of humour and questionable dress sense. Over four decades, John has
witnessed multiple changes to the school uniform, the introduction of technology, the erection
of many buildings and a vast turnover of staff. Through ever-changing educational trends,
John personified tradition right down to his vintage Corolla.
On a more serious note, John’s loyalty to North was legendary. He was very proud of our
school and played a key role in promoting North in the community. In addition to shaping the
minds of generations of students, John has been tireless in his coordination of our annual
auction for many years. His dedication to this job has raised many thousands of dollars
towards major school projects. North has made constant use of John’s photography skills at
every function. “Snapper” Drzewicki was a standard part of the interhouse athletics program
for over twenty years. There are few students who did not have their Prom photo decorated in
the trademark shades of Drzewicki mauve.

From The Pedagogy Team……
Knowing both your own and your child’s personality types will add a further dimension to your un-
derstanding of them (and understand what makes them tick!) and it can assist in your personal
and work lives as well.
Peoples’ behaviour and personality types can be categorised into three types and the general
characteristics of each type are as follows:
Type A
- preoccupied with getting things done; seldom looks at instructions
- inclined to interrupt during conversations and discussions; not a good listener
- dislikes waiting in queues and becomes agitated
- tend to be impulsive and impatient
- susceptible to distress and health issues related to tension
- appears to be pumped up and energetic most of the time; always in the zone
Type B
- adopts a “no worries, she’ll be right mate” attitude
- not worried by much at all; very few anxieties
- accepts and is happy with their own existence and who they are
- content and not overly ambitious
- experiences very few health issues
- appears to be laid back and casual most of the time and life is a breeze
Type C
- on the surface everything seems to be fine
- stews on and internalises problems; like a duck on a pond, the legs are working overtime under
the water while everything looks serene on the surface
- holds in feelings and experiences inner conflict

DANCE SHOWCASE NIGHT
One of the highlights of our school cultural
calendar is the recent addition of our Dance
Showcase Night which is on next Tuesday
evening, August 16 in our hall, starting at
7.00pm. This concert showcases the
wonderful achievements of our Year 9 – 12
Dance students this year in their classwork.
As well, this year’s performance will be
particularly significant as it will also feature the
debut of our newly formed North High Cheer
Squad, the Firecrackers. We are very excited to
welcome this troupe to the cultural life of our
school and are extremely grateful to Mr Fergus
for all his hard work in establishing this group
which has been rehearsing since March. The
members of the squad will be featured at our
Dance Night and later, on Tuesday, October 25
at our annual Showcase Concert.
Do come along and support our very talented
dance students. Entry is by way of a $3.00
donation at the door.
SENIOR DRAMA PRODUCTION
At present the Senior Drama students are
preparing for their final performance piece of
assessment which will take the form of a
drama presentation titled Stories in the Dark
by Debra Oswald. The students are in charge
of all aspects of the production and are
intensively rehearsing for the big event
which will be held in our hall on Tuesday
evening, September 6. This is always a
very popular cultural event and entry is only
$3.00 at the door.
YEAR 9 MUSIC EXCURSION
As part of their Music of the Media unit, the Year
9 Music students are very privileged to have
been invited to visit the Sea FM studios to meet
with Angela Julian, the content director, who will
demonstrate to them how to write and produce
jingles. This excursion will take place on
Tuesday, August 23. Using their newfound
knowledge, the students will then set about
writing their own jingles in class, which is always
a highlight in the Year 9 Music curriculum.
