These questions are behind much of the story of the book of Exodus. The account for today's reading is several chapters later than Moses' encounter described in Exodus, chapter 3 where God says, “I am who am.” The Lord, the name given in today's reading, is an English translation for the Hebrew Yahweh. Since some Jewish people consider the name for the Unnameable too holy to pronounce, Adonai is a frequent substitution. In the reading from Paul's second letter to the Corinthians, the familiar Trinitarian formula concludes the section: “The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with all of you.” We hear that during the liturgy as we try to call Mystery into our assembly and place ourselves in the presence of a God who is beyond anything we can imagine. Names establish relationships. That's what we do as we stumble to name a God who loves us into being and keeps us in God's tender care. The feast of the Trinity, a day that celebrates a mystery beyond comprehension, is a Sunday about God's relationship with God's own self and with us. Any of the PSR kids could probably tell us that there are three persons in one God. We might not understand that any better than they do. Comprehending mystery is an exercise in futility; relationship with God is the foundation of our life in Christ. We believe in a God who is Creator, Redeemer and Spirit and whose very life as three-in-one impels us to reflect on our relationship in a community of believers. The American poet Emily Dickinson playfully and profoundly ends her poem # 18 with an image of the Trinity: In the name of the Bee-- And of the Butterfly-- And of the Breeze—Amen! God the creator, Jesus the Risen One, and the Spirit as elusive and as powerful as wind (recall Pentecost's mighty wind) is the God we traditionally call Father, Son, and Spirit. It can help to imagine creative ways to name the Unnameable and address infinite Mystery. Ponder: How do I address God? What image do I have in my mind and heart? How does the life of the community of the Trinity fill our parish community? How can our families and our parish live so that we reflect the relationships that we see modeled in the Trinity? Do: Create your own image of “the Bee, the Butterfly, and the Breeze.,

FEAST OF THE MOST HOLY TRINITY JUNE 15, 2014

Bird, Butterfly, Breeze (By Regina Siegfried, ASC)

How do we name the Unnameable; what do we call Mystery? These questions are behind much of the story of the book of Exodus. The account for today's reading is several chapters later than Moses' encounter described in Exodus, chapter 3 where God says, “I am who am.” The Lord, the name given in today's reading, is an English translation for the Hebrew Yahweh. Since some Jewish people consider the name for the Unnameable too holy to pronounce, Adonai is a frequent substitution. Names establish relationships. That's what we do as we stumble to name a God who loves us into being and keeps us in God's tender care. The feast of the Trinity, a day that celebrates a mystery beyond comprehension, is a Sunday about God's relationship with God's own self and with us. Women in Scripture Series: Throughout scripture, we meet women who played key roles in salvation history. Some of their stories are familiar, some we seldom hear. Join in a five part series celebrating the women of the bible. From our OldTestament matriarchs to the women of the early church, see how these chosen women of God inspire us to be bearers of the good news in our world today. These sessions are being held here at St. Vincent’s presented by Kathleen G. Davis, spiritual director and retreat leader. The series remaining dates are, June 26th, and July

10th. Sessions are at 6:30pm in the annex.

The ACTS team of women began preparing for the upcoming retreat for the weekend of September 4-7, 2014. Please consider joining

them on that weekend. Applications will be available soon.

What are we talking about?

Primary focus point #1: Human rights and the family What does scripture say? “But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.” (1Timothy 5: 8 “Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.” (Romans 12:6-8) What has the Church said over the years? Commentary/ narrative

“But however extensive and far-reaching the influence of the State on the economy may be, it must never be exerted to the extent of depriving the individual citizen of his freedom of action. It must rather augment his freedom while effectively guaranteeing the protection of his essential personal rights. Among these is a man's right and duty to be primarily responsible for his own upkeep and that of his family. Hence every economic system must permit and facilitate the free development of productive activity.” (Mater Et Magistra, #55) “ Experience has shown that where personal initiative is lacking, political tyranny ensues and, in addition, economic stagnation in the production of a wide range of consumer goods and of services of the material and spiritual order—those, namely, which are in a great measure dependent upon the exercise and stimulus of individual creative talent. Where, on the other hand, the good offices of the State are lacking or deficient, incurable disorder ensues: in particular, the unscrupulous exploitation of the weak by the strong. For men of this stamp are always in evidence, and, like cockle among the wheat, thrive in every land.” Mater Et Magistra, #57-58)
