Scandinavian Smorgasbord coming up on October 8th: Food donation and worker “sign-up” sheets for the Scandinavian Smorgasbord are located in the Narthex today. Please stop by and sign up to volunteer and donate an item or two for the dinner. There are opportunities for everyone to participate – work, simple items to purchase, food to prepare (recipes are provided) or cash donations. The Smorgasbord is the main fundraiser for Lutheran Women of ALC and enables us to continue our mission work. Thank you for your support! Tusen Takk!
Kitchen space is needed: Soon kitchen space will be needed for the Scandinavian
Smorgasbord. Please check the refrigerator and freezer for any food items that could be
removed. Also, please check the coat rack outside the kitchen for pans and bowls that
have not been picked up. Thanks!

Brain Health Have you ever exercised your
brain? Keeping your brain active or “exercising” the brain is an important aspect in your overall health. There are many different ways to keep your brain active, which can reduce risks to cognitive function as you age. Try out some of these exercises:
• Engage in meaningful activities:
• Learn new hobbies or skills, taking on a new project, or volunteer.
• Learning new activities or skills can help reduce depression, improve memory and overall wellbeing.
• Be physically active:
• Studies have shown exercise can increase the part of the brain that contributes to memory and learning.
• Get at least 30 minutes of physical activity each day. Walking, gardening, biking, can be good places to start.
• Get regular health screenings:
• Stay on top of any underlying issues that could affect brain function.
• Sleep problems, depression, and other chronic health conditions can negatively affect the brain and decrease wellbeing.
• Try new brain games:
• Research is being done to see if “brain games” can have an effect on memory throughout the aging process.
• There are many different apps and websites to play brain games that can stimulate critical thinking. (I use a site that has various types of puzzles, one being jigsaw puzzles).
• A less technological route, is doing cross words or puzzle books.
God gave a us neurological handbook- the Bible. In Romans 12:2 it says, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

Hurricane Disaster Response
Large areas of Texas, Florida and other southeastern states have been devastated recently by hurricanes Harvey and Irma.
Besides significant property damage, tens of thousands of people have been
displaced and may be housed in shelters for an extended period of time. Lutheran Disaster Response (LDR) is actively pre-
sent in these areas, collaborating with community leaders and officials to initi-
ate the proper responses, particularly long-term recovery efforts. LDR has a
strong history of working with disasters of every kind. The road to recovery will be long, and Lutheran Disaster Response will be there to accompany those affected through every phase. You are invited to
join in standing by our neighbors by providing help and hope. Your gift will be used entirely (100%) where needed
most. Together, we can help provide im-mediate and long-lasting support. Checks can be made out to “American Lutheran Church” with “LDR hurricane response” noted on the memo line. Please place in the offering plate or return to the church
office.
