Nosce Te Ipsum Weekly Bulletin - Week Commencing 29th May 2017 Half term next week. We will see you on Monday 5th June. News from the Headteacher. There has been much excitement during break times over this last week, as we have now had a drinking fountain installed in the school playground. As you may be aware from the School Council school improvement plan that was shared with you recently, this is a project that has been exclusively led by the pupils of the school and my School Council. I would like to thank my Head Boy, Louie Glanvill, for initiating the project and raising funds for the project last term through the sale of raffle tickets for a giant bunny and chocolate eggs. This alone raised £83 towards the purchase of the drinking fountain. Thanks also to Nina Kreel, Head of School Council, for helping to coordinate the project so successfully with her School Council team. Lastly, I extend my thanks to the Deepdene Association which has eagerly supported the project by contributing the remainder of the money needed to purchase and install the fountain. This ensured the quick completion of the project and I know the Year 6 pupils are very grateful to have the remainder of the academic year to enjoy this new feature of the playground. What thirsty work! This has been a fabulous example of us all working together successfully to make improvements to our school community. With all this glorious weather, it has certainly been put to good use during this week! Ms Brown

Half term next week.We will see you on Monday 5th June.

Thanks also to Nina Kreel, Head of School Council, for helping to coordinate the project so successfully with her School Council team. Reception:I thoroughly enjoyed my time with the Reception pupils last week. We all went a little dotty learning about ladybirds. We played Ladybird bingo and painted our own ladybirds, as well as learning lots of interesting facts about them too. We read a story about a very angry ladybird who wanted to fight lots of different animals for food. The angry ladybird finally learns a lesson about friendship and the importance of sharing and being kind. All the children did some beautiful writing and illustrations about their favourite part of the story which they completed with Mrs Stoner when she returned on Friday. We had a lovely few days and I especially enjoyed getting to know the children a little better. Mrs Stoner was warmly welcomed back into her class on the Friday by the children; they enjoyed showing her the work they had done whilst she had been away at camp. Ms Brown

Year 1It has been a busy week with some interesting practical activities. We have explored a variety of wild flowers in Science and will be making flower-press booklets soon. We are keeping an eye on the rocket seeds we planted for the school healthy eating initiative; that are growing at varied rates! We have spoken a great deal about vertices/corners, edges and faces in Maths for our ‘3D shapes’ topic. In RE the focus has been on what is important to us in the place where we live and what makes us happy there. The children have worked very well in ICT using the internet to find information on whales. The emphasis was to collect only facts that we clearly understood. We then used these facts to write lovely poems about whales. The Year One Teaching Team

Year 2:Year 2 have worked very hard this week, especially practising telling the time for Maths. I am very pleased at the way they are learning to tell the time to the nearest five minutes using the hour and minute hands. In Literacy, the children have been revising grammar, especially the use of nouns and verbs in their writing. We have been continuing to learn about Florence Nightingale as part of our History topic and the children all wrote acrostic poems about her. The children very much enjoyed their ICT lesson this week, as they were invited to spend time with the Year 6 pupils, who over the last half term have been busy designing games for them to play using the computing programme Kodu. I am also very proud of the children for learning their parts for our assembly about Life Processes and Living Things. We are looking forward to performing it for you at the Open House Morning after half term. Ms Rosen

Year 3:The Year 3 pupils did themselves proud showing parents how much French they know when they performed the French play to parents last week. Thank you so much to all parents who came along to watch the performance; we had a great audience. Again, thank you also for providing extra costumes and props - that was extremely helpful! I was very proud of all the pupils in the class for working so hard to learn their lines and improve their pronunciation.

In Science this week we have been dissecting flowers to find their different parts. We also learnt the roles those different parts play in the pollination and fertilisation process. The children have found this fascinating and asked lots of interesting questions. We have also continued to make observations of our plants in the classroom and we have a better understanding of what

Page 3: We will see you on Monday 5th June

plants need. The plant we haven’t watered really doesn’t look healthy!

In Geography, we looked at rivers in the UK and seas that surround our island. We used our atlas skills to find names and locations.

In History, we have been researching Sutton Hoo and finding out about what was found at this burial site. Please ask your child to tell you about this fascinating topic.

In Maths, we have been revising measurement. We have guessed at the capacity of containers and worked out the perimeter of different 2D shapes. We have also revisited the tricky topics of time and duration, which everyone feels more comfortable with now.

In English, we are writing our own legends. Each child has imagined being changed into an animal by the wizard Merlin. We are writing them out in neat to make an illuminated manuscript. Well done for all your hard work this week Year 3!The Year Three Teaching Team

Year 4:What an incredibly busy week Year 4 had. Our happy campers returned after two very exciting days at Hindleap Warren where they participated in a variety of outdoor activities including shelter building, tunnel activities, fire building, problem solving, blindfolded obstacle courses and much more. The activities provided many challenges which the children rose to brilliantly and they learnt a great deal about themselves, including how capable they all are. Here is what some of the children had to say about their experiences:

Once back at school, other learning included the study of Tesselation in Art, which provided a lovely cross-curricular Maths link as part of their Colour and Pattern topic. In Maths, our pattern work continued with revision of reflective symmetry (extending to a 45 degree mirror line) and the children have been learning to recognise equivalence between tenths and hundredths in both fraction and decimal form. The Year 4 Teaching Team

“The hardest climbing wall really

challenged me because there were

a lot less rocks and lots of bigger

spaces.”

“Going through the tunnels was

hard for me, but I did it in the end. They were dark and muddy.”

“I challenged myself to do the Forest Adventure and I did it. I am

very proud of myself.”

“The best thing about Hindleap was

the Forest Adventure, where we got

soooo muddy!”“I liked the forest adventure and

the part where my welly came off in the muddy river!”

Year 5 & 6:We didn’t see much of the pupils at school this week; they were too busy having midnight feasts; getting covered in mud and enjoying the great outdoors with Mrs Stoner and Miss Gordon at Hindleap Warren. You can read all about this elsewhere in this week’s bulletin. In the lessons before this great adventure they continued to work as hard as ever and this week we have a bit of a Science update. The pupils have been learning about the Earth, Sun and Moon. They have learnt about the relative sizes of these objects; the distance in between them and the movements they make around each other. They discovered how many things depend on their movements, for example the cycle of day and night and the seasons. The children experimented with some body movement to get the feel of what it is like to be the sun or the Earth. They also looked at shadows and followed the movement of the Sun across the sky, although of course they now know that it is not the Sun which is moving! Mrs Croucher and Ms Jambor

Hindleap Warren Residential Trip:The Year 4, 5 and 6 pupils had a wonderful time at Hindleap Warren. We split into two groups for most of our activities and the Year 4s, Miss Gordon and their instructor Dan made their own fires and toasted marshmallows. They challenged themselves on the climbing wall and obstacle course and then learnt to work together in a series of team building exercises. The upper school pupils all joined together for a night time walk

to the ‘Wych Tree’ and then we had an epic 3 hour forest adventure hike learning about the famous ‘Drop Bears’ and tracked deer, ending with a very wet and muddy river walk. Let’s just say the water went up to the teachers’ waists! It was quite a challenge but ultimately the children all succeeded and felt very proud of themselves.

We all ate together in the Hindleap Canteen and agreed that the food was really, really good. During our stay, the children had to do canteen duty which meant clearing away and washing cutlery. The children enjoyed their massive sleepover with their friends sharing their tuck and going in and out of each other’s rooms for hours! Years 5 and 6 along with myself and our 2 instructors, Dylan and Ronnie, enjoyed lessons on Bushcraft, the climbing tower, the leap of faith, a very muddy obstacle course, archery, pot holing, swimming, the zip wire, crate stacking and team challenges. They all loved visiting the tuck shop and having hot chocolate and cookies in the evening. The year 6s performed impressions and plays, and enjoyed the annual camp awards. The awards ranged from laziest camper to most fashionable and from huffiest to most logical! Every one of the children overcame fears and learnt a whole range of new skills from making their own beds, being in charge of their own belongings, choosing their lunches, sweeping, hanging out clothes to dry, listening to instructions and following instructions. We all had a fantastic time and thankfully the weather was much drier than the forecast suggested!Mrs Stoner

This week, the person with the fastest time on the 77 question challenge was Abraham, with another great time of 2 minutes 21 seconds.

The person who achieved the fastest time on the 50 question grid was Arthur, with a time of 5 minutes 5 seconds. Well done, Arthur!

I would like to make special mention of Eva this week, who tried the 77 question grid for the first time and got an impressive time of 5 minutes and 36 seconds and full marks. Very well done!

The person who achieved the most improved time AND score this week was Isaac. His previous time was beaten by a very impressive 3 minutes and 51 seconds and he improved his score by 3 correct answers. Congratulations, Isaac!Mrs Gann
