We can't be kind, true, merciful, gen- erous, or honest." One of our 2020 Vision Provocative Proposals calls on us to be a church which cultivates "deep wisdom and courageous faith." On Wednesday nights in Septem- ber at Second B we will be reflecting on what it means to have and to act with courage. As a part of this series, we will have the opportunity to listen to and reflect with per- sons from both within and outside our congrega- tion who have lived lives marked by extraordinary courage. When we think of courage what usually comes to mind first is bravery in the face of com- bat or some other physical threat. This is, of course, one aspect of courage. Yet there is an- other aspect to courage aside from that of the physical courage; there is also moral courage. Moral courage is the act of confronting fear, un- certainty, or intimidation in the face of shame, rejection and disillusion. In Christ we see both physical and moral courage displayed. On Wednesday nights this September we will have the opportunity to be in conversation with people of Christ-like courage. Among the stories of courage we will hear will be that of a Palestinian Christian who lives a physically coura- geous life on the spiritual and political border between Jews and Muslims in Nazareth, Israel, a woman who found the courage to live again after losing her spouse in a trau- matic way, a man who found the courage to overcome ad- diction, and a couple who found the courage to parent with acceptance and love under very trying circumstances. The root of our word “courage” comes from the Latin word "coraticum" -- heart. To live with courage is to live from the large heart within our- selves. It is courage which gives us the heart to live all the other virtues in the face of struggle and opposition and even failure. I hope you will join us on Wednesday nights to have your own heart encouraged by the courageous hearts of others. For we are not alone; and in that we take courage.
