Weatherford’s Alpha VSRD is a technological breakthrough in

multiphase metering that offers improved accuracy and simplied

operation compared to other products on the market. By combining

traditional Venturi and gamma densitometer technologies with

Weatherford’s innovative sonar and Red Eye® technologies, the Alpha

VSRD excels where other multiphase meters fall short. These key

technologies improve ow-rate measurements and dramatically reduce

sensitivity to varying uid properties thereby eliminating the need for

frequent recalibrations. For trouble-free wellhead ow measurement or

separator replacement, the Alpha VSRD multiphase owmeter is the

right solution.

Applications

• Individual well monitoring. The Alpha VSRD owmeter provides a

cost-effective means of tracking real-time hydrocarbon production data

from each well.

• Test separator replacement. The compact Alpha VSRD multiphase

owmeter is an ideal replacement for bulky test separators, especially

for high-pressure or corrosive well streams. Furthermore, because

there is no need for purging, well tests can be performed in less time,

which translates into more frequent tests of your critical assets.• Wet gas or multiphase. Unlike other multiphase meters that cannot

operate on high gas wells, the Alpha VSRD meter handles any gas/

liquid ratio. It is a wet-gas and multiphase meter in one. This feature

is key for slugging wells that uctuate between gas-dominant and

liquid-dominant ow regimes.

Features

The Alpha VSRD owmeter is fully integrated. The ow computer maintains all

uid and set-up parameters and reports real-time oil, water and gas rates, as well

as produced volumes at line or standard conditions. The data are available on the

touch pad display and via MODBUS®. Low power consumption and high ambient

temperature rating make it suitable for solar panel power and desert applications.

The meter also includes remote pressure seals on the meter body to reduce the

chance of plugging. It is designed for Class I, Zone 1 hazardous locations.

Principle of operation

 Alpha VSRD is based on an extended-throat Venturi meter, a sonar owmeter,

a Red Eye® MP water-cut meter and a gamma densitometer. This combination

of technologies has a wide operating envelope and offers maximum accuracy in

wet-gas and liquid-dominant multiphase streams.

The sonar owmeter measures the convection of turbulent vortices using an

array of dynamic strain sensors. Sonar has the unique capability to measure total

ow rate accurately over an extremely wide range of Reynolds numbers (ow

rate, uid types) with a negligible overreading in wet-gas ows. Overreading is

the ratio of apparent ow rate to the actual ow rate.

The Venturi owmeter is based on the measurement of static pressure drop

across a converging pipe section. The pressure drop is proportional to the

increase in kinetic energy of the ow stream, that is conservation of momentum.

The Red Eye MP water-cut meter is a lter spectrometer that employs the

principle of near-infrared absorption to measure water content in a liquid or

multiphase stream. The meter reports accurate water cut independent of ow

regime, ow rates, water salinity and hydrate inhibitors.

The gamma densitometer uses a small radioactive source and measures the

attenuation across the process pipe. The attenuation provides a measure of the

gas and liquid content (gas void fraction) in the pipe.

The Alpha VSRD combines these four technologies for a robust, full-range

multiphase owmeter for the measurement of gas, oil/condensate and water rates.
