April - May 2017 Price 40p Copy Deadline for June / July 2017 issue Monday 8 May 2017 A nd the whole thing happened remarkably smoothly. Unpacking wasn’t too bad either. Friends came and emptied boxes. And despite having to ignore several unnecessary comments about the number of ramekins/ earrings/ shoes I possess, things quickly took shape. But one thing was missing. The oven. All we had was a Massive Big Gap, where an oven should have been. I had spent weeks agonising about an oven. Should it be a 60 or a 90 or a 110? LPG, oil, ceramic or induction? Black, chrome, grey or red? I read. I scrolled the internet. I asked questions. I looked at other people’s and still I found it difficult to reach a decision, because it was impossible to see one. I needed to see the oven of my choice. I needed to feel it. To open and close its doors, to turn its dials, to experience its heat and its fan, to caress its surfaces, to stand in front of it, like the High Priestess Delia, tossing in herbs, spices and seeds, conjuring imaginary culinary delights. In the end, I heard my mother’s voice ringing in my ears. ‘You can’t go wrong with John Lewis …John Lewis…John Lew…’ So, I listened to the ghost of Ma and went to the Sainted John, ordered an oven and was given a delivery date. But the delivery date changed. So much for saints! So much for Ma! After nearly three weeks, Oven Delivery Day dawned. But something very strange had happened to the Massive Big Gap – it was no longer there! It had been filled with other items. With the longed-for promise of a roast, and surrounded by salivating offspring, the oven was installed. I reached for a saucepan, and assumed, what I hoped was a Kitchen Goddess pose. But I couldn’t open the cupboard door! Not now I had an oven in the Massive Big Gap. Squeezing my arm through a crack, I desperately tried to feel the familiar shape of a pan. Any pan. Contorting like Houdini, I limbered down, with absolutely none of the elasticity of a pole- dancer (or should it be vaulter?), and without any of the poise and grace of Darcy (I wish!). Eventually I managed to twist a pan through the gap and slam it, triumphantly on the hob. (Eat your heart out Mary Berry!) Only to find that none of my saucepans worked on my new induction hob! So why am I telling you this? Well, it strikes me that it is something of a metaphor. I bought my oven in faith, without having seen it or tried it out. I plumped for it on good advice. Before it arrived, I had filled the space with other things. Repeatedly using old stuff on it was not going to work. Faith is a bit like that. Sometimes we need to buy into it before fully experiencing it. Sometimes we need to act upon a hunch, a feeling or a prompt while there’s still space for it. In so doing, we may have to ditch some old stuff to fully enjoy the new. Jesus said that all it takes for incredible things to happen is faith the size of a mustard seed. Have a look at all the faith stuff that is happening across the Exe Valley in the next couple of months on pages 10 and 11 and find out what it’s all about. Easter is a good time to ‘dip your toe’ in the waters of faith. You may well be surprised. And join me, wherever you are, however much faith you do or don’t have, to pray. Together, great things can happen. Oh, by the way – the oven’s wonderful! Better than I could ever have imagined. Steph More from Steph on Pages 3/12 WE’VE MOVED !

EDITORIALCan it really be Easter ?

Wasn’t it only yesterday that it wasNew Year’s Eve ?

We have been busy making somechanges to the Middle Pages.

Steph is keen to promote more inter-linking of the Parishes and felt that itwould help, if it was set out as onebox per week - instead of one box perParish. This means that we can seeexactly what is happening everyweek, throughout the Exe ValleyCommunity, at one glance.

It is now easier to see where andwhen the Group and Cluster Servicesare taking place.

In his role as Advertising Co-ordinator, Geoff has been preparingto send out reminders for the AnnualRenewals - so don’t say you haven’tbeen warned !!

We will delay sending out the brownSubscription envelopes until theJune/July issue.

Steph Reflexe …

Every morning I try and say theDaily Prayer. It’s something I

promised to do. I don’t alwaysmanage it, but most of the time I do,and the words sink in deeply.

Some of those words have taken anextra significance, since moving toWithleigh. What I like to do, first thingin the morning, is to open my curtains, lie in bed and say the Daily Prayer, using my phone, or my iPad – or eventhe book.

Some mornings I can see the sun justmaking an appearance, in the farcorner of my window. As the suncomes up, slowly the light changesand a rosy glow fills my room. It istruly amazing.

And then I say these words:‘In the tender compassion of our Godthe dawn from on high shall breakupon us. To shine on those who dwellin darkness and the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way ofpeace.’ (Luke 1: 78-79) The dawnfrom on high shall break upon us!

God’s love, his resurrection hopeand promise of new life have brokenupon us. They have broken upon us inthe form of Jesus, God’s much lovedson. And we remember this at Easter,at Pentecost and every day a newday dawns. It’s truly amazing.

Perhaps you would like to join me,every morning, whatever time yousurface, wherever you find yourself, and think about these words:

Through the heartfelt mercies of ourGod,God’s Sunrise will break in upon us,

Shining on those in the darkness, those sitting in the shadow of death,Then showing us the way, one foot ata time, down the path of peace.

FROM THE ARCHIVES‘TODAY’ 50 years ago

April and May, 1967

Ron Herniman’s lead article in theApril issue talked about wells in

various properties (WithleighRectory included) that were fed frommore than one source, and the extentto which water quality from one wellto the next varied so much, fromclean to ‘disgusting’. He continuedby likening television to the onesource, but from which the standardof programmes varied from thewholesome to the disgusting. Thiswas at the time of the MaryWhitehouse campaign, which readerswere encouraged to join. [Seems tome that little has changed – PI].

At Templeton, films were shown atthe end of their annual meetings.

Washfield’s Notes included referenceto the Isles of Scilly, with its dangersof submerged and part-submergedrocks. Aberfan, and the TorreyCanyon (1967 disasters) were alsomentioned.

The youngsters of Oakford hadbeaten Exmouth to reach the ‘Criss-

cross-quiz’ final (a regional Biblequiz), though Withleigh had lost outto Lapford in their semi-final.The lead article in the May magazine(Yes, the magazine was monthly inthose days!) concerned the processof selection in our secondary schools, and attitudes to education. [Whatgoes round, comes round?].

The front cover carried the words,“Well done, Oakford”, after the youngpeople had won the final of the Biblequiz, winning a cup and a plaque, bybeating Lapford 240 - 150.

The Torrey Canyon disaster againfeatured in May, reference beingmade in both the Stoodleigh andLoxbeare notes.

Stoodleigh’s parishioners were alsoconcerned about the possibility thatBishops would no longer have thefinal say on C of E matters, includingdoctrine.

‘Templeton Tales’ looked at churchesnamed ‘Temple’.

We are pleased to have been able toserve the Exe Valley MissionCommunity during another vacancy, but it would be wrong not to recordour thanks to all who haveencouraged and supported us,especially when things dragged on,and the prospect of self-inflictedbaldness looked a distinct possibility!

Our grateful thanks are also due tothose members of the clergy who will-ingly helped out during the vacancy(and we are pleased to learn will con-tinue to be involved in the Exe Valley)

– without you, covering the pattern ofservices, month on month, wouldhave been impossible. That is oneaspect we are pleased to be able toshed after some 7½ years!

NATURE NOTES

Down in the valley, our approachto Spring has been accompanied

by the incredible view of Venus in theevening sky, and constant visits of afamily of five long tailed tits. It mademe reflect on how many memorablesights in Nature are only specific tothat time in the calendar.

Immediately one thinks of theflowering of spring bulbs but myobservations and experience oftendeviate from the accepted norm. Forexample, I have often drifted home onan early Summer evening and heardmy first cuckoo of the year but to sayit was ‘the first cuckoo of Spring’would be an exaggeration. Similarly,

I have never seen hares boxing inMarch when their liveliness isassociated with the start of thebreeding season.

In the shelter of the lanes of Devon, the seasons can be out of kilter withthe rest of the world. Saxifrage andcleavers have been busily colonisingthe banks from as early as January. However, I would like to promote onesight that is pending [but I acceptmay not be to everyone’s taste] andthat is the arrival of the St Mark’s fly –so named because they will indeedemerge for the feast day of the saint[25 April]. The males are a shiny, sinister black but their long legs andthus strange flight paths, like droneswith broken undercarriages, makethem instantly recognisable as theyswarm in the lane. Unfortunately theydo this at head height, so you have achoice to either limbo dance under,or walk through with a tightly closedmouth. You can guarantee that it willbe a lovely fine day because, if yourlifetime in flight is restricted to sevendays, you do well to choose goodweather.

I am reminded of a sermon fromchildhood. The priest invited thecongregation to marvel at thewonder of creation and to contrastthe immensity of the universe withthe exquisite detail of smallercomponents. Children were asked toimagine how difficult it must havebeen to design and fix the legs on a fly. Thus in our household, any task thatdemands concentration and finedetail, is forever referred to as a

“‘fly’s leg job”.

It involves mowingthe new yard and the paths in the oldchurchyard about once a week for amonth, depending upon the weatherand growth of grass, or less if youcannot make a full month. It is so nicethat many parishioners are lookingafter their graves so well and lovinglybut please could you take your waterbottles away with you as they do notlook very nice in the banks and couldget in the way of the mowers.

The graveyard entrance is sometimesdifficult and, although it has hardcoreon one side of the gateway, it is verysteep. There is a small gate at thewestern (Parish Hall) end of the yard, and also through the Lych Gate andthen the path up the middle of the oldyard, either of which can be used.

OAKFORD

On 20 January relations andfriends filled St Peter’s to give

thanks for the life of Mike Boynton. The Rev’d Ian Johnson led anuplifting Service and the tribute wasread by Mike and Wendy’s eldest son,Tim, who spoke of his father’s variedinterests and achievements and aworking life that had required him tolive in many different countries. After coming to settle in Oakford in1994, Mike pursued a quieter life butstill kept busy looking after his land, delighting in his grandchildren anddevoting his time to service in thechurch. The reading chosen byWendy and read by Steph (1Corinthians Chapter 13 verses 4-13)offered encouragement to all, especially those trying to followMike’s example in service to StPeter’s: There is nothing lovecannot face; there is no limit to itsfaith, its hope and its endurance.

Wendy sends heartfelt thanks to allthose who have shown support withvisits, cards and letters. The loveexpressed has been of great comfort.

The Devonshire Society of BellRingers visited St Peter’s on 4February and rang a very specialpeal of 5088 changes taking 3 hours6 minutes and named it the BoyntonSurprise Major in memory of Mike. They returned on 2 March to presenta plaque to Wendy for display in thechurch, commemorating the event.

On 31 January the church was fullagain for the funeral of Alex Millage, aged 35 and chef at The Red Lion, who died following a tragic drowning

Also continued thanks to GlennHookins for winding our churchclock, it means a lot to us all.

On Saturday 15 April we will bedecorating the church for Easterfrom 10am. If you would like to helpor if you would rather bring flowersor foliage that would be a great help.

STOODLEIGH

March came in like a lion, with asuccession of storms, some of

which tried to fool us by adoptingfriendly names like Doris. We hadhigh winds (we lost one of the big oldash trees across the field from thechurch a few weeks ago) and plentyof good Devon rain to put a squelchunder our boots. But this is always amonth of hope and promise, and welook forward to seeing it ‘go out likea lamb’.

Ash Wednesday fell on 1 March and aGroup Service was held that (stormy)evening here at Stoodleigh. It wasHoly Communion with Ashes, takenby Steph. It was good to see thereturn of this moving service whichmarks the beginning of Lent and wewere delighted to welcome so manyfrom the Exe Valley MissionCommunity. Perhaps suitably, thechurch was pretty cold!

Steph will be with us for our FamilyService on 2 April at 11am and foranother Group Service at Stoodleighon 28 May at 10.30am.

Over the Winter we replaced themonthly Evensong with MorningPrayer but now that the days arelengthening and it is getting warmer,

PRAYER DIARYTHY KINGDOM COME

Pledge2Pray 9 4 9Thy Kingdom Come is a global prayer movement, which

invites Christians around the world to pray between Ascension andPentecost for more people to come to know Jesus Christ. What started outas an invitation from the Archbishops’ of Canterbury and York in 2016 to theChurch of England has grown into an international and ecumenical call toprayer.

The hope is that:people will commit to pray with God’s world-wide family - as a church, individually or as a family; churches will hold prayer events, across the UKand in other parts of the world; people will be empowered through prayerby the Holy Spirit, finding new confidence to be witnesses for Jesus Christ.

Thy Kingdom Come 2017 has just been launched by Archbishop Justin andwe are being encouraged as Christians, from across our traditions anddenominations to come together specific focus of prayer betweenAscension and Pentecost. Find out more from www.thykingdomcome.global

Bishop Robert has filmed a special message for our Diocese –http://exeter.anglican.org/bishop-robert-thy-kingdom-come

This year, prayer boxes will go out to every church in the county, to collectpeoples’ prayers. They will be brought back to a big event at Pentecost inExeter Cathedral at 6.30pm with Bishop Sarah, to which everybody isinvited.

Growing in prayer is the first priority of the new diocesan vision and we arepraying for more people to know God's love for them. In his video messageon the diocesan website, where he encourages communities to get involved,Bishop Robert said: “This is a special time dedicated to renewing the life ofprayer in our churches. As I am going around the Diocese, one of thepriorities I am talking about is the importance of us growing in prayer andso I am asking people to come together and pray together in creative andimaginative ways for their communities.”

In response to this, I am suggesting that as a Mission Community, and asindividuals we Pledge2Pray 9 4 9. Every day at 9.00am and 9.00pm betweenAscension and Pentecost I am asking that we “stop” in our 9 parishes andpray for 4 people, countries, issues, friends – or whatever is on our hearts.Prayer boxes will be given out, nearer the time. When we come together tocelebrate Pentecost at Oakford on 4 June, we will bring our prayer boxes, before the event in the evening, at the Cathedral.

More details in the next Issue.

CRUNCH TIME!

Decisions have to be made about thefuture of the church at Templeton. In one year's time there will be noChurchwarden and only a very smallcongregation.

So, what are the OPTIONS?

1. The church closes.

2. The church becomes a Festivalonly church.

3. More people attend, aChurchwarden is found and StMargaret's continues in its presentform.

This is an Historic moment forTempleton. Please attend the AnnualParish Church Meeting onWednesday 5 April at 7.45pm inTempleton Village Hall, to hear moreand voice your opinion.

Dressrehearsal

This year's Holiday Club is called "Dress Rehearsal" which, as the name suggests, has atheatrical theme.

Dress Rehearsal will see us explore and learn about some of the popular Bible stories, including the story of Noah, The Ten Commandments and The Prodigal Son. We do this ina fun way, through craft and physical activities, talks, drama, singing and prayer.

This will all take place in Calverleigh Hall from Wednesday 26 July to Saturday 29 July,11.15am to 3.30pm. It is for children aged 5 - 11.

The Holiday Club Service and Fun Day will be on Sunday 30 July. This will also be inCalverleigh Hall.

Holiday Club or "Holidays at Home" as it was formerly called, has been running for over50 years and we would like to make this a celebration year.

In order for us to run Holiday Club, we need plenty of helpers, and this can be as little oras much time as you are able to give. I would like to hear from anyone who is able to helpduring the week. There is no age limit for helping. Teenagers - if you have been to HolidayClub (or even if you haven't) and would like to help, I will be pleased to hear from you.

All volunteers over 16 need a DBS check. Please do not be put off by this. It is a simpleprocess, which I can do, and it doesn't have to be renewed for 5 years.

More details in the next Magazine.

Please ring Cindy on 01363 866621, if you can help or if you would like more information.

EASTER SYMBOLSAt Easter it is all bunnies, eggs and lambs inthe shops. Why are they symbols of Easter?

One of the oldest Spring symbols in the worldis the egg - it promises new life as in Spring, fluffy yellow chicks are hatched from eggs.

The hare was a symbol of the moon and isconnected with Easter because the date of

Easter depends upon the full moon.Over time, the hare became a rabbit, because

there are more rabbits around than hares!

The lamb represents Jesus and links His deathto that of the lamb sacrificed on the

first Passover.Jesus is called "the Lamb of God."
