  • Welcome remarks

On behalf of the Chemical Industries Council of Malaysia (CICM), I would like to extend a warm welcome to all of you to the 2nd Hazards Asia Pacific Symposium, and particularly to our overseas delegates, Selamat Datang to Malaysia.

This is the second time the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) Hazards Asia Pacific Symposium is staged in the Asia Pacific region, with the theme Achieving Operational Excellence in a Competitive Environment. This years symposium marks CICMs second collaboration with IChemE to bring this prestigious event to the Asia Pacific region and once again, to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

With a forecasted growth of 7% annually, the chemical industry worldwide is largely driven by countries in Asia. This dynamic industry remains to be under public scrutiny to ensure high standards of safety and operating conditions are constantly maintained in safeguarding the interests of the local communities as well as the environment.

Thus, it is paramount for CICM to stay true to its role in championing the sustainable growth of the chemical industry by urging chemical companies to achieve health, safety and environmental (HSE) excellence. This is very much in line with the aspirations of the global chemical industrys voluntary Responsible Care initiative, of which CICM is the main champion in Malaysia. We believe HSE excellence plays an integral part and will lead to sustainable growth of chemical business operations in the long term.

Complementing our Responsible Care initiative, we hope that the Hazards Asia Pacific Symposium this year will serve as an integral platform to enhance the process safety management of chemical operations locally, as well as in the Asia Pacific region. The great line-up of international keynote speakers and a programme spanning over three days will definitely bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to all safety practitioners and professionals attending this symposium.

I would like to convey my heartfelt gratitude to all our conference partner, sponsors, distinguished speakers as well as members of the Organising and Technical Committees for graciously coming together to make this years symposium a truly exceptional continual learning event for all of us.

Finally, my best wishes for a successful conference to all delegates of the 2nd Hazards Asia Pacific symposium.

    Dr Abd Hapiz Abdullah

    CICM Chairman

CICM Chairmans message for 2nd Hazards Asia Pacific Symposium

B.P. Chow Chairman of IChemE in Malaysia

    Dear friends & esteemed colleagues,

On behalf of the board of the Institution of Chemical Engineers in Malaysia, it gives me enormous pleasure to welcome you to the 2nd Hazards Asia Pacific Symposium, extending our international mission to establish world-class standards in process safety in this region.

First staged in Manchester, England in 1960, Hazards was extended to Malaysia for the first time in 2011 with over 200 delegates in attendance. This year the conference is bigger and better: more delegates, a bigger exhibition and an extended technical programme, featuring seven outstanding international plenary speakers and two parallel sessions covering all aspects of chemical process safety.

I am delighted to see the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) represented here at the conference. Its new guidance on corporate governance, published last year, confirms that leadership on process safety from the very top of a company is essential for successful and sustainable business performance.

This provides an excellent stimulus for IChemE and its corporate partners to secure improved leadership in process safety worldwide.

Please find the time to visit our stand in the exhibition area and talk with IChemEs team to find out how we can help you to build a better understanding of process safety and risk management issues.

    Enjoy the conference

    B.P. Chow

    Chairman of IChemE in Malaysia

PS: Now an annual event, we are already planning the third symposium in May 2014 your opportunity to be part of the largest gathering of process safety professionals in South East Asia!
