ON PRAISE AND SUCCESS ON PRAISE AND SUCCESS As you are aware, our school has used the PATHS program to develop self esteem and improve relationships in our children from its inception. Each week an article is inserted in this publication to help you with strategies you may use to ensure that we are giving our children the same messages to develop good relationships and prepare them for life. A recent study from the University of Queensland has found that we as a society have a tendency to overpraise our children. This, results in our children entering the workforce with a view that they are owed something, a sense of entitlement. They viewed criticism as bullying and as a result were discontented in the workplace. In keeping with these studies, we at Aveley continue to raise the bar and challenge our children ensuring that we don’t make our children too reliant on praise and always connecting praise with a specific achievement. This is reflected in our Passport Program and the recently introduced House Token competition. So rather than saying to your child ‘’’you are a good boy/girl”, try praising for specific things they may do that elicits praise from you. This will help to develop their appreciation of earned praise and of course their resilience when they are corrected for unacceptable behaviour or behaviours that are not on our values map. Congratulations to the following students who have been recipients of prizes from the Treasure Chest, for every 20 reward stamps in their Aveley Achievement Passports.

Please note High Achiever Award Badges will be presented at Monday Muster

The year 5 and 6 students from rooms 14 and 15 will be attending Aveley Primary School’s first ever camp in term 4 in Dwellingup. The students are planning to help minimise the cost of their camp by participating in fund raising within the school. They will be selling icy pole tubes, a raffle (with

prizes of a football signed by ‘Nic Nat’ from West Coast Eagles, a birthday party voucher valued at $100 from ‘Let’s Party” + more) and badge making.

The yummy Icy poles we have for sale will have no added preservatives or colours and the tubes are natural fruit flavoured. Prices are $1 a tube or 50c for half a tube and will be for sale in the Wattle Wet Area each Friday lunchtime.

They have planned Icy Pole Fridays, starting next week, 2nd August and running every Friday for as long as possible.

Watch out for further information with regards to the raffle and badge making!

HOUSE TOKEN COMPETITIONHOUSE TOKEN COMPETITION

With effect from next week, all children can win a House Token for good behaviour in the school yard. They can put this token in the coloured post boxes located outside the Library and Banksia Block.

Each fortnight our Councillors will collect and count the tokens and announce the House score at assembly. The winning House at the end of Term will be rewarded with a sausage sizzle.

ADDITION AND SUBTRACTIONADDITION AND SUBTRACTION

When children are little, they need to understand the difference between adding or joining, and subtracting or separating. When you are doing everyday things, you can emphasise the difference in how you talk to them.

Examples of what talk can be used:

• “We have this many, how much/many more do we need to get?”

• “We don’t need this much/many, how much/many do we really need?”

• “I only have this much money, what can I buy/what do I have to put back/how much money do I need?”

• “If everyone needs 3 of these how many do I have to buy?”

• “Can you work out how many we have left?”

• “Can you separate this washing into yours and mine?”

These types of situations show how we use addition and subtraction in our lives.

On Thursday children from Wattle 14 and 15 were thrilled to participate in an excursion at GinGin Observatory—The Space Place. There were many things to see and do and lots of interactive tasks which were hair raising! Thank you to Genevieve Cocliff and David Thomas for joining us in our adventure.

FEELING SORRY AND SAYING I’M SORRYFEELING SORRY AND SAYING I’M SORRY

One of the main teaching points when addressing the concepts of saying “I’m sorry” and “feeling sorry”, is to help your child to differentiate between the feeling, which is internal and genuine versus the external behaviour of saying sorry.

Feelings can mean any of the following three things:

1. Feeling apologetic and regretful. “I feel sorry that I did that”. The feeling that is expressed may be remorse, ashamed, regret or guilt.

2. Feeling sympathy and compassion for another with no responsibility implied. “I feel sorry that your friend has moved away”. The feeling that is expressed may be compassion, sympathy or concern.

3. Feeling miserable with sorrow. “I feel sorry for myself”, “I feel sorry that my pet has died”. The feeling that may be expressed bay be sad, upset or miserable.

Facial expressions for the three different types of feeling sorry are all different, but they all reflect a feeling of genuinely being upset. As your child develops in their social and emotional development the differences in this concept will seem more obvious. On one hand the behaviour of saying “I’m sorry” provides much greater variation of meaning. One can express sorrow for any of the three feelings listed above but can also express sorrow or regret without any of the feelings. This can lead to confusion for a child when they are told by an adult to tell other people that they are sorry. The sorry is sometimes expressed to prevent getting into trouble. Sometimes “I’m sorry” is said in order to get someone to act differently but it doesn’t necessarily mean that they feel sorry. The use of tone of voice, body language and facial expression are all important clues for the genuineness of the apology.

State, National and International Taekwondo Coach Mr Charles Rawlins, wi l l be conducting Taekwondo classes for children at Ave ley Pr imary Schoo l on Wednesday and Friday from 4-5pm.

This program is designed specifically for primary school children aged between 4 to 14 years of age, the

classes involve teaching the physical aspects of Martial Arts as well as the core values of Respect, Discipline, Confidence, Self Awareness, and of course Self Defence skills.

Give us the chance to help develop these important life skills to your children, that will help them through their entire life.

Hi Everyone,

Welcome back to term three. We hope everyone had a great rest over the holidays.

Thank you to all our families who sold their boxes of chocolates over the break, it was a great success. Just a small reminder that all monies and donations were due to be returned back to the P&C box by Wednesday, 24 July. If you haven’t done so as yet could you please make this a priority as we have to finalise the monies.

Just two reminders, firstly banking is to resume this coming Tuesday, 30 July at 8.20am. I am sure our lovely banking ladies are looking forward to seeing everyone and hearing about your adventures over the holidays. Secondly everyone would have received their book club pamphlets. If you would like to place an order the forms are to be returned by Wednesday, 7 August and placed in the P&C box.

The P&C have been very lucky and have been able to secure two dates with Bunnings Malaga to hold a fundraising Sausage Sizzle. The first date being Saturday, 17 August and we are looking for volunteers to help and support us in what we are hoping to be one of our biggest fundraising events for the school this year within the community. Enclosed in this newsletter you will find a volunteer flyer regarding this event. We would love to have as much support possible. You can do this by returning your flyer with your preferred time options by Friday, 2 August. We need the flyers returned no later than this date as it provides the P&C members enough time to collate a roster and personally contact everyone. We would like to thank everyone in advance and look forward to your support in making this a fun event with a fantastic outcome of reaching one of many of our goals this year in contributing towards the projector needed for our students in the undercover area.

We hope everyone enjoyed their first week back.
