February, for me, usually conjures up pink, romance, dining out, love and for being a short and quick month. I also hope it brings

some nice crisp mornings and a few more hours of daylight!

2015 is off and running. We almost slid our way into February with the icy road conditions and attempted snow showers. Be prepared is the guide motto and boy it has stuck with me all these years… don’t

always adhere to it though.

Fresh slate as we enter 2015 what I plan to do differently is to be more organised! I think it is possibly on my to do list every year but this is definitely going to be my organised year. I plan to be organised in the home, garden and work-place. Just a little bit of effort every week, so 52 weeks of effort I should see mountains moved by December, but I’ll try and keep you posted on my progress. If you are looking for some motivation then Lee is for you! She sends me a motivational email every week. It is enough to get my head back in gear. I’m sharing one of her tips with you in the magazine this issue. I do hope it helps.

I hope you enjoy some of the short articles this month and I’ve managed to put back in some puzzles as I think you quite enjoy them!

Now it’s time to refill your cuppa and enjoy the rest of the magazine.

Until next time, Sue

Gary Jamieson (Scots Guards)

Whilst on an operational tour in Afghanistan in 2010 Gary stepped on an IED, his limbs had taken the full force of the explosion and Gary lost both his legs and an arm. The ABF the Soldiers Charity supported his family whilst a significant number of home modifications

were made, so that he could return home. The charity also helped to make Gary's car accessible, Gary

said, "Being able to drive again was really important to me as it was a progression in my independence going from home into the car, The Soldiers Charity has had such a positive impact in my life." Gary is only one of many soldiers and veterans that The Soldiers Charity has helped, they gave so much, now together let us show our support to allow The Soldiers Charity's to continue to be able to support many more of those in need.

Your help is needed

Would you be prepared to nominate The Soldiers Charity as your charity of choice?

Do you plan to run a 10k, 1/2 marathon, marathon, or perhaps a sponsored walk, cycle or climb? Whatever your challenge please choose the ABF The soldiers charity, the Army's national charity founded in 1944.

Why not host a fundraiser? A coffee morning, concert, 70's Disco. Volunteer to help out whenever needed.

Please contact to discuss. I look forward to hearing from YOU!

Please help those servicemen and women, who were and like Gary have sacrificed so much, I believe they have earned the right to our help.

Kind Regards

The New Season beckons- The Club will open its doors for the outdoor season on Saturday 18th April at 2pm when we hope that the sun will be shining for the traditional game of the President’s team versus the Vice-President’s team. This is always a great social event with a meal to follow a few ends of bowls. The season has begun! Cults Bowling Club offers games, both friendly and competitive with other clubs, in-house tournaments, Scottish ADLBA and BBA games, pizza nights and a barbeque. All games are played keenly but always in friendship—the essence of the game of bowls.

Winter Activities- Members and friends have so far enjoyed our St Andrews Night, the Christmas Party and Burns Night. Of course, the Games night on Tuesdays and the whist on Wednesdays continue until Opening Day. The Bridge Club, meeting on Mondays, also goes on until the outdoor season begins. On 21st February, we are holding a special event in the Cults Kirk Centre. We are to be entertained by Ocean 3 with the songs of Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Ella, Dean Martin, Judy Garland, and many others from that golden era! Ocean 3 are the Rat Pack!!

If you wish to book a ticket or a table, please contact David Steele at 868485. Bring a party to a party! We conclude our winter programme with a talk about Iceland on Saturday, 14th March at 7pm for 7.30pm. This will be delivered by our local expert, Shirley Milton, who regularly takes tours to Iceland.

Membership Fees- The annual fee for the season 2015/16 is £95, with under 21s paying only £10. Once again, we are encouraging new members to come and try out the game of bowls by offering reduced fees. New members will pay only half the annual fee in their first year. There is also a special rate for families: for the first two years of membership, a family pay only one annual fee for all members. Coaching is available for young children.

An Open Club- Cults Bowling Club welcomes every expression of interest—for bowling, for social events or for both. You will find we are an open club with friendly members. Feather Their Nest It’s National Nest Box week this month.

Did you know that there is a National Nest Box Week? This year it takes place from 14th-21st February. The event is organised by the British Trust for Ornithology. The idea started in 1997 following fears about birds losing their natural nest sites because of lots of trees being cut down, old buildings disappearing, gardens being ‘tidied’ and old houses being repaired.

The Trust wants us to put up nest boxes so that we can protect the wildlife we have, and encourage even more birds to come into our gardens.

It is estimated that there are now over 5 million nest boxes in the UK designed to help everything from Robins to Owls. Different types of nesting box attract different birds. So in a box with small holes, you might get Blue Tit’s, Nuthatches, Redstarts or House Sparrows. Boxes with larger holes may encourage Starlings, Spotted Woodpeckers and perhaps even Little Owls; and in very big boxes you might see Kestrels, Jackdaws, Stock Doves and Tawny Owls. There are also open fronted boxes which appeal to Robins, Spotted Flycatcher and Pied Wagtails.

Imagine how lovely it would be to watch the birds going in and out of your boxes and hopefully some young ones hatching there. If you are careful and quiet, you can even peek inside the box from time to time when the eggs are incubating, as most birds will sit tight. If you want to count the eggs, observe in the early morning and wait until the female bird flies off for a quick meal.

You can choose to buy some nest boxes from your local pet store or garden centre, or make some. Instructions for building boxes are available on many internet sites including http://www.bto.org/ the British Trust for Ornithology site.

Here are some handy hints for siting your nest boxes:

Do not put nest boxes of the same type close to each other

Open fronted boxes should be hidden from view

Make sure cats cannot get into the boxes

Consider putting a metal plate around the hole to deter squirrels

Boxes should be sheltered from the weather

Keep the boxes away from bird feeders

Place between 1 and 5 metres high

Use screws that will not rust

February is an ideal time to put boxes up, because pairs of small birds prosper towards the end of the month. You are also helping however if you put boxes up at any time of year, although 1 August to the 31 January is the time under Bird Protection Law when nests can be cleaned out, and any dead eggs found destroyed.

Flipping PancakesHow do you eat yours?

Over the years I’ve tried my pancakes with fruit, maple syrup, and a variety of savoury fillings, but I keep coming back to fresh lemon juice and a sprinkling of sugar...irresistible.

Here is my own recipe for perfect pancakes.

Ingredients115g (4oz) plain flourPinch salt1 large egg285ml (half a pint of milk)115g (4oz) butter, meltedJuice from 2 lemons, strainedCaster or Demerara sugar to taste.

To make the batter: sift the flour and salt into a large mixing bowl and make a well in the centre. Beat in the egg and a little of the milk until smooth. Gradually beat in the remaining milk and add 4 tablespoons of the melted butter. Cover the bowl and leave to stand for one hour.

In a small non-stick frying pan heat some of the butter until sizzling, but taking care not to let it burn. Pour enough batter into the pan to coat the base evenly. Cook over a moderate heat until the pancake is light golden brown underneath and looks dry on top. Flip over (try to do this with style!) and cook the other side until golden. Continue until all the batter is used. The recipe should make 10-12 pancakes.

You can keep the pancakes warm in the oven (Gas mark 1 / 140C) until they are all cooked, but in our house they’re barely out the frying pan before they’re scoffed.

Serve with the lemon juice and sugar...Enjoy!

PLUM AND ALMOND TARTServes 6

Ready in 1 1/4 hours, plus chilling

Served with thick cream, custard or ice cream, this tart makes a delicious warming winter pud. You can use other fruits if plums are not available –try chunks of apples or pears or Armagnac-soaked prunes for a special occasion.

175g self-raising flour

100g unsalted butter, chilled and diced

50g ground almonds

3 tbsp caster sugar

1 small egg, beaten

50g natural marzipan, chilled and grated

4 large plums, stones removed and quartered

2 tbsp flaked almonds, roughly chopped

2tbsp Demerara sugar

Sift the flour into a bowl, add the diced butter and, using your fingertips, rub the fat into the flour until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Stir in the ground almonds. Remove ¼ of the mixture and chill in the fridge.

Add the caster sugar and beaten egg to the remaining mixture and mix to a soft, slightly sticky dough. Using floured hands press the dough into the base and up the sides of a 28 x 10cm oblong loose-based flan tin (see tip). Chill in the fridge for 30 minutes.

Preheat the oven to 180C, 350F, Gas Mark 4. Scatter the grated marzipan in the chilled flan case and top with the plum quarters (skin side up). Stir the flaked almonds and Demerara sugar into the reserved breadcrumb mixture and scatter over the plums.

Bake the tart in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes, or until crisp and deep golden brown. Leave to cool in the tin for 10 minutes. Remove the tart from the tin and slice and serve.

TIP

If you don’t have an oblong shaped flan tin use a 20cm round loose-based fluted flan tin instead.

Transform your home with McGregor Garrow ArchitectsAs architects, Ian and Ron McGregor are often approached by clients unsure about the building process, and whether they require the services of an architect.

When first contacted by a client, about improving their home or building a new one, we arrange an INITIAL CONSULTATION to establish the client’s requirements and explain the process. Following this, we offer to carry out a FEASIBILITY STUDY – this typically includes: a measurement survey, computer generated drawings of existing and proposed, along with visualisations of the design (examples above), and reporting of overall project costs.

On completion of the feasibility study, the project can move on to the PLANNING stage – which deals with the external appearance of the building. Following the planning process, we apply for BUILDING WARRANT approval, with drawings detailed to meet current regulations. With these drawings, we prepare tender packages, which are sent out to local building contractors to obtain competitive costs.

During the CONSTRUCTION phase, we oversee projects through to completion, bringing designs to reality by working closely with building contractors to transform your home.

Employing an architect is essential to the smooth running of building projects, large and small. With over 10 years’ experience, and a range of successfully completed projects, we will maximise the space, light and aesthetic quality of your home.

World Book Day‘There are many little ways to enlarge your child’s world. Love of books is the best of all.’

So said Jackie Kennedy Onassis, and in support of this philosophy, more than 100 countries worldwide will be commemorating World Book Day on Thursday 5th March. This year marks the eighteenth anniversary of the event, which is designed to encourage children to explore the pleasure of books and reading.

How exactly the occasion is celebrated is up to the individual school or library,

with ideas and resources for activities available from the website www.worldbookday.com,

but regardless of the outcome, every child in participating schools will receive a book token that can be exchanged for a free book. There are ten specially selected titles on offer, with the option to use the token to receive a £1 discount on an alternative book if you prefer to choose your own.

There are many benefits to encouraging a healthy attitude towards reading from an early age. The main one is that it exercises the brain. “Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body,” stated Joseph Addison. It improves concentration, builds vocabulary, develops imagination, teaches about the wider world, is a great form of entertainment and helps relax and calm the body and mind.

So, enlarge not only your child’s world but your own too, by discovering the joy of books!

Don’t Worry, Be HappyWhen the weather is bleak and grey, how can we lift our mood?Exercise - When we exercise our brain releases feel-good endorphins, making us happier. Even a short 5 minute stroll round the block can boost your mood. Think how you might add just a little more movement into your daily life: Maybe a few morning yoga poses, or an evening walk.

Get Immersed - Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, renowned psychologist found that immersing ourselves in an activity we love, which also requires skill, makes us happy. Try reading, playing the guitar, writing a blog, or cooking, immerse yourself in a hobby and your mood will brighten.

Laugh - Laughter changes the energy of a situation immediately and lightens our mood. Try watching a DVD of your favourite comedian.

Better still, visit a comedy club and give yourself permission to laugh-out-loud.

Meditate - Scientific studies have proved that emotions, and happiness in particular, can be trained. Even a few minutes of meditation per day have a positive impact our brain and sense of well-being.

Be part of a community - Research shows that people involved in their community are happier. Communities foster emotional support and a connection with others, which leads to a greater sense of well-being. The community could be a group of like-minded people such as a choir, or art-group.

The Mains of Drum has recently received both a 5-star Visitor Attraction Quality Assurance Award and a Taste Our Best Food and Drink award.

The garden centre in Drumoak, Aberdeenshire, which features fresh, seasonally and locally sourced food on its menu, is celebrating after successfully securing the two quality awards from VisitScotland.

The Taste Our Best accreditation, which is a joint initiative between VisitScotland and the Scottish Government, with support from Scotland Food and Drink, recognises businesses for including and promoting local produce in over 60 percent of their menu.

Located on the first floor of the garden centre with windows looking out onto the rolling Aberdeenshire hills, the 200 seat Mains of Drum’s restaurant provides and caters for a variety of visitors with dishes such as Cullen Skink, Stornoway black pudding and eggs from the Sunnyside Farm in Maryculter.

Marketing Manager, Beverley Spindler, from the Mains of Drum said: “We are absolutely thrilled, not only to be awarded the five stars, but for our restaurant to achieve the ‘Taste our Best’ Award at the same time. We truly believe in providing a top quality service to our customers on every visit and for them to taste delicious, locally grown food, when dining in our beautiful restaurant.

The Taste Our Best initiative brings together the tourism and food and drink industries.  It is designed to recognise businesses including; hotels, restaurants, cafes, takeaways, visitor attractions, B&Bs and pubs or bars; that not only offer a quality food and drink experience, but include and promote Scottish produce on their menus, to give consumers choice.

Research has shown that visitors are willing to pay up to 15% more for food that is of Scottish or regional origin and businesses that provide local food can typically enjoy higher level sales of up to 20% per year.

The Taste Our Best scheme is the latest addition to VisitScotland’s Quality Assurance (QA) Schemes, which aim to drive up quality in tourism products across the country. Taste Our Best will provide businesses with an assessment of their food provision and their menu by qualified assessors, with those meeting the necessary criteria gaining the award.

For accommodation providers and visitor attractions, the assessment will take place at the

same time as the main VisitScotland Quality Assurance grading, meaning that many tourism businesses that already participate in the QA Scheme will no longer have to apply and pay for a separate food and drink assessment.

Further details on Taste Our Best can be found at: www.visitscotland.org/quality-foodanddrink.aspx

Back CarePrime Mover Pathway

It is estimated that up to 80% of people will have some degree of back pain in their life and that up to 49% of people will have back pain in any one year. (http://www.backcare.org.uk/factsandfigures). There are 50% of children aged 4-20 have lower back pain (Olsen et.al.1992), with the first lower back pain usually being experienced between the ages of 12-14 yrs. (Fairbank et.al 1984).

The best thing you can do to help most back pain is to keep your back, and spine, moving. It is the lack of movement which usually causes the muscle to weaken, which results in these key muscles not supporting the spine, this strains other muscles to

cause some form of back ache.

Joseph Pilates said 'Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness'

Essential movements of the spine are the foundations to a great quality of life. Understanding how you carry your body, will help you to know what it is you can do on a daily basis to improve your posture. Knowing how you move and understanding what you can do to help your movements will greatly affect your quality of life.

We need to have strength in our muscles of the belly and back so that they hold us together efficiently. These muscles are sometimes called 'your corset'. We have three layers of muscle in the belly and back. The deepest layer holds us

together, the transverses abdominus: goes from the belly round to the back. The next layer holds us together and a gives a little movement, the Obliques, at the side of the belly and around the back. It helps us twist around. Finally the top layer moves us, helps us to bend forward, the rectus

abdominus also known as the 'six pack', in the belly.

If the deep layer isn't strong and doesn't support us the larger muscles have to take over. However, when we move, the larger muscles get too much work to do so it start to strain and pain is the body's way of saying the muscle is doing too much. By improving the strength of the deeper muscles the larger muscles are under less strain, reducing the pain and discomfort.

Spinal exercise will give you a great movement through the spine, AND they will activate the deeper muscles, 'your corset', to help support your spine. All this in turn will give you less discomfort in your back.

Can you:• Assessyourownposture• Understandhowyoucarry yourself • Knowwhatitisyoumightneedto change with your posture• Starttomovethroughthespine in all directions • Keepadiary, makeanoteofyour work with these exercises

Prime Mover Pathway uses Pilates and muscle releases to enable movement and strength in the older adult.

Keep a diary of your activity to know if the exercises are benefiting you.

Prime Mover Pathway has an Ebook and online videos you can access via the Ebooks to help you move the spine for strength. Write down how you feel during the exercises and how you feel a day later, this will give you an indication of your progress.
