    Student Financing of Undergraduate Education:

    2007–08

These Web Tables were authored by Christina Chang Wei of MPR Associates, Inc. The NCES Project Officer was Tracy Hunt-White. For questions about content or to view this report online, go to: http://nces.ed.gov/pubsearch/pubsinfo.asp?pubid=2010162

    In 2007–08, approximately 21 million

    students were enrolled in undergra-

    duate postsecondary education in the

United States. These Web Tables pro-

vide a comprehensive source of infor-

mation on financial aid that was

    awarded to undergraduate students

during the 2007–08 academic year. In-

cluded are estimates of tuition, price of

    attendance, and financial aid, shown

    by the enrollment and demographic

    characteristics of students. The tables

are similar to those produced for the

    1995–96, 1999–2000, and 2003–04 Na-

    tional Postsecondary Student Aid

Study (NPSAS) reports on student fi-

    nancing of undergraduate education,

and are grouped into five separate sec-

    tions:

Section 1 displays the percentile distri-

    bution among all undergraduates for

family income, tuition, and price of at-

    tendance. These distributions were

used to create the categories for these

    variables in the subsequent sections.

    Section 2 shows undergraduates’ aver-

age tuition and fees and average price

of attendance. The price of attendance

includes books and supplies, room and

board (or housing and meal allowances

    for off-campus students), transporta-

tion, and other personal living ex-

    penses.

Section 3 looks at the various types of

    financial aid that undergraduates re-

    ceived—federal, state, and institutional

    aid and combined amounts—by type

    of institution attended.

Section 4 shows net tuition (tuition and

fees minus all grants), net price of at-

tendance (price minus all grants), the

out-of-pocket net price (price minus all

    aid), and financial need.

    Section 5 examines students’ depen-

    dency and attendance status, resi-

    dence, race/ethnicity, gender,

    citizenship, family income, and their

distribution by the type of institution

    attended.

    Aid Study (NPSAS:08): Student Financial

Aid Estimates for 2007–08: First Look

    (NCES 2009-166).

    Web Tables—Undergraduate Financial Aid

Estimates by Type of Institution in 2007–

    08 (NCES 2009-201).

DATA The estimates presented in these

tables were generated from the 2007–

    08 National Postsecondary Student Aid

    Study (NPSAS:08), a comprehensive,

    nationally representative survey of

    how students finance their postsecon-

dary education conducted by the Na-

    tional Center for Education Statistics

(NCES). NPSAS also includes a broad

  • 2

    array of demographic and enrollment

    characteristics.

NPSAS uses a two-stage sampling de-

sign. Institutions are selected for inclu-

sion in the first stage, and from these

institutions students are selected in the

second stage. The NPSAS:08 target popu-

lation consisted of all eligible undergra-

    duate and graduate students enrolled

any time between July 1, 2007, and June

    30, 2008 at Title IV1 eligible postsecon-

dary institutions in the 50 states, the Dis-

trict of Columbia, and Puerto Rico.

    Approximately 114,000 undergraduates

    and 14,000 graduate students were

    study respondents for NPSAS:08.

For an overview of the survey metho-

dology, see appendix B of the report

    2007–08 National Postsecondary Stu-

dent Aid Study (NPSAS:08): Student Fi-

nancial Aid Estimates for 2007–08: First

    Look (http://nces.ed.gov/pubs2009/

    2009166.pdf).

DATA ANALYSIS SYSTEM (DAS) These estimates were produced using

the Data Analysis System (DAS), a web-

    based software application that

enables users to generate tables for

    most of the postsecondary surveys

conducted by NCES. The DAS produces

    the design-adjusted standard errors

necessary for testing the statistical sig-

    nificance of differences between the

estimates. The DAS also contains a

detailed description of how each vari-

able was created and includes the

    wording of questions for variables

    coming directly from the interview.

With the DAS, users can replicate or ex-

pand upon the tables presented here.

The output from the DAS includes the

    parameter estimates (e.g., percentages

or means), their standard errors,2 and

weighted sample sizes. If the number of

valid cases is too small (i.e., fewer than

30 cases) to produce a reliable esti-

mate, the DAS prints the message “low-

    N” instead of the estimate.

In addition to generating tables, DAS

    users may conduct covariance analyses

with either weighted least squares or

    logistic regression. Many options are

available for output with the regression

results. For example, a Winsor filter can

be used to eliminate cases with ex-

treme values by deleting some cases

from the top and bottom of the range.

The DAS can be accessed electronically

    at http://nces.ed.gov/DAS. If users are

new to the DAS, the DAS User Help

    Center (http://nces.ed.gov/dasol/help)

    provides online tutorials offering step-

by-step instructions on how to use all

the functions of the DAS. For a descrip-

tion of all the options available, users

    should access the DAS at

    http://nces.ed.gov/dasolv2.

ENDNOTES 1 Title IV institutions are those eligible to par-ticipate in the federal financial aid programs included in Title IV of the Higher Education Act. These programs include Pell grants, feder-al student loans, work-study, and other federal aid. 2 NPSAS samples are not simple random sam-ples; therefore, simple random sample tech-niques for estimating sampling errors cannot be applied to these data. The DAS takes into account the complexity of the sampling pro-cedures and calculates standard errors appro-priate for such samples using a bootstrap technique. This technique approximates the estimator by replications of the sampled population.

    National Center for Education Statistics

NOTE: This table excludes students attending more than one institution. Students who were enrolled part time for any amount of time during the 9-month academic year, including those who were enrolled full time for part of the year, are included in the part-time/full-year or part-time/part-year categories. Estimates include students enrolled in Title IV eligible postsecondary institutions in the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico.

1 All institutions also include public less-than-2-year and private nonprofit less-than-4-year institutions in addition to those listed separately in this table.2 Black includes African American, Hispanic includes Latino, American Indian includes Alaska Native, Pacific Islander includes Native Hawaiian, and Other includes respondents having origins in a race not listed.

    All institutions1

3 Calculated separately for dependent and independent students and then combined into this variable. Each ranking thus compares the student only with other students of the same dependency status. Uses parents’ total income if the student is dependent and the student’s own income if the student is independent. Total income in 2006 is used because this was the income reported on the federal financial aid application and used for federal need analysis for the 2007–08 academic year.

NOTE: This table excludes students attending more than one institution. Full-time/full-year students represent 38.5 percent of all undergraduates attending only one institution. Estimates include students enrolled in Title IV eligible postsecondary institutions in the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico.

3 Loans only include loans to students. Excludes federal Parent PLUS loans.

1 Black includes African American, Hispanic includes Latino, American Indian includes Alaska Native, Pacific Islander includes Native Hawaiian, and Other includes respondents having origins in a race not listed.

Detail may not sum to totals because of rounding.

2 Calculated separately for dependent and independent students and then combined into this variable.

‡ Reporting standards not met.1 All institutions also include public less-than-2-year and private nonprofit less-than-4-year institutions in addition to those listed separately in this table.2 Black includes African American, Hispanic includes Latino, American Indian includes Alaska Native, Pacific Islander includes Native Hawaiian, and Other includes respondents having origins in a race not listed.

4 Loans only include loans to students. Excludes federal Parent PLUS loans.NOTE: This table excludes students attending more than one institution.

3 Loans only include loans to students. Excludes federal Parent PLUS loans.NOTE: This table excludes students attending more than one institution. Detail may not sum to totals because of rounding. 2 Calculated separately for dependent and independent students and then combined into this variable.
