RIBBON Located near the top of the Word window. The control center for creating Word documents. Provides easy, central access to the tasks you perform while creating a document.

Consists of tabs, groups, and commands. Includes 8-top level tabs (File, Home, Insert, Page Layout, References, Mailings, Review,

View). Tab currently displayed is called the active tab. The Home Tab is called the primary tab Contextual Tabs are viewed when you perform certain tasks or work with objects such

as pictures or tables. Commands on the Ribbon are the related functions that are located in each group.

They include buttons, boxes (text boxes, check boxes, etc.), and galleries which are sets of choices often graphical that are arranged in a grid or in a list.

To display more of the document in the document window you can minimize the Ribbon which hides the groups on the Ribbon and displays only the top level tabs.

To minimize the Ribbon you can: (1) right-click on any Tab followed by clicking Minimize the Ribbon on the shortcut menu, (2) double-click the active tab, (3) click the Minimize the Ribbon icon located to the left of the Help icon in the upper right hand corner of the Word window, or (4) press Ctrl + F1.

ENHANCED SCREEN TIPS are on-screen notes that provide the name of the command, available keyboard shortcut, a description of the command, and sometimes

instructions for how to obtain help about the command vs, a typical Screen Tip which usually only displays the name of the command.

KEY TIPSIf you prefer using the keyboard instead of the mouse, press the ALT key on the keyboard or Shift + F6 to display a Key Tip badge or keyboard code icon for certain commands. To remove the Key Tip badge from the screen, press the ALT key, Shift + F6, the ESC key, or click the mouse anywhere in the Word window until all Key Tip badges disappear.

This is an example of an Enhanced Screen Tip for the Format Painter tool.

DIALOG BOX LAUNCHER is a small arrow located in the lower-right corner of some groups on the Ribbon. When clicked, a dialog box or a task pane is displayed with additional options for the group. Once you are in a Dialogue Box, you must make selections. Thereafter, close the Dialog Box before returning to the document.

TASK PANE is a window that can remain open and visible while you work in the document.

MINI TOOLBAR Appears automatically based upon the task you perform. Contains commands related to changing the appearance of text in a document. Its purpose is to minimize mouse movement.

If you want to use a command that currently is not displayed on the active tab, you can use the command on the Mini Toolbar.

All commands on the Mini Toolbar also exist on the Ribbon.

SHORTCUT MENU Appears when you right-click on an object. A list of frequently used commands

that relate to the right-clicked object. Press Shift + F10 for this menu to appear.
