完形填空专题复习 邹芳
一.完型填空试题主要特点:1. 通常从一篇 300词左右文章中设空 20个,首句不挖空;
a.忽略文章首句的提示作用;
b.忽略文章中上下文之间的照应关系;

I will never forget the year I was about twelve years old. My mother told us that we would not be 21
Christmas gifts because there was not enough money. I felt sad and thought, "What would I say when the
other kids asked what I'd 22 ?" Just when I started to 23 that there would not be a Christmas that year,
three women 24 at our house with gifts for all of us. For me they brought a doll. I felt such a sense of 25
that I would no longer have to be embarrassed when I returned to school. I wasn't 26 . Somebody had
thought 27 of me to bring me a gift.
Years later, when I stood in the kitchen of my new house, thinking how I wanted to make my 28
Christmas there special and memorable, I 29 remembered the women's visit. I decided that I wanted to
create that same feeling of 30 for as many children as I could possibly reach.
So I 31 a plan and gathered forty people from my company to help. We gathered about 125 orphans
(孤儿) at the Christmas party. For every child, we wrapped colorful packages filled with toys, clothes, and
school supplies, 32 with a child's name. We wanted all of them to know they were. 33 . Before I called
out their names and handed them their gifts, I 34 them that they couldn't open their presents 35 every
child had come forward. Finally the 36 they had been waiting for came as I called out, "One, two, three.
Open your presents!" As the children opened their packages, their faces beamed and their bright smiles 37
up the room. The 38 in the room was obvious, and 39 wasn't just about toys. It was a feeling — the
feeling I knew 40 that Christmas so long ago when the women came to visit. I wasn't forgotten.

I met Mrs. Neidl in the ninth grade on a stage-design team for a play and she was one of the directors.
Almost instantly I loved her. She had an unpleasant voice and a direct way of speaking, 36 she was
encouraging and inspiring. For some reason, she was impressed with my work and me.
Mrs. Neidl would ask me for my 37 . She wanted to know how I thought we should 38 things. At
first I had no idea how to answer because I knew 39 about stage design! But I slowly began to respond to
her 40 . It was cause and effect: She believed I had opinions, so I began to 41 them. She trusted me to
complete things, so I completed them perfectly. She loved how 42 I was, so I began to show up to paint
more and more. She believed in me, so I began to believe in myself.
Mrs. Neidl's 43 that year was, "Try it. We can always paint over it 44 !"I began to take 45 . I had
been so afraid of failing but suddenly there was no failing--only things to be 46 upon. I learned to dip my
brush into the paint and 47 create something.
The shy, quiet freshman achieved success that year. I was 48 in the program as "Student Art
Assistant" because of the time and effort I'd put in. It was that year that I 49 I wanted to spend the rest
of my life doing stage design.
Being on that stage-design team 50 Mrs. Neidl changed me completely. Not only was I stronger and
more competent than I had thought, but I also 51 a strong interest and a world I hadn't known existed.
She taught me not to 52 what people think I should do: She taught me to take chances and not be 53 .

Another person’s enthusiasm was what set me moving toward the success I have achieved. That person
was my stepmother.
I was nine years old when she entered our home in rural Virginia. My father 36 me to her with these
words: “I would like you to meet the fellow who is 37 for being the worst boy in this county and will
probably start throwing rocks at you no 38 than tomorrow morning.”
My stepmother walked over to me, 39 my head slightly upward, and looked me right in the eye.
Then she looked at my father and replied,“You are 40 . This is not the worst boy at all, 41 the smartest
one who hasn’t yet found an outlet(释放的途径)for his enthusiasm.”
That statement began a(n) 42 between us. No one had ever called me smart. My family and
neighbors had built me up in my 43 as a bad boy . My stepmother changed all that.
She changed many things. She 44 my father to go to a dental school, from which he graduated with
honors. She moved our family into the county seat, where my father’s career could be more 45 and my
brother and I could be better 46 .
When I turned fourteen, she bought me a secondhand 47 and told me that she believed that I could
become a writer. I knew her enthusiasm, I 48 it had already improved our lives. I accepted her 49 and
began to write for local newspapers. I was doing the same kind of 50 that great day I went to interview
Andrew Carnegie and received the task which became my life’s work later. I wasn’t the 51 beneficiary (受益者). My father became the 52 man in town. My brother and stepbrothers became a physician, a dentist,
a lawyer, and a college president.
What power 53 has! When that power is released to support the certainty of one’s purpose
第 14 页, 共 80 页
and is 54 strengthened by faith, it
becomes an irresistible(不可抗拒的)force which poverty and temporary defeat can never 55 .

do with your enthusiasm.

I used to hate being called upon in class mainly because I didn’t like attention drawn to myself. And
36 otherwise assigned(指定)a seat by the teacher, I always 37 to sit at the back of the classroom.
All this 38 after I joined a sports team. It began when a teacher suggested I try out for the
basketball team. At first I thought it was a crazy 39 because I didn’t have a good sense of balance, nor
did I have the 40 to keep pace with the others on the team and they would tease me. But for the teacher
who kept insisting on my “ 41 for it”, I wouldn’t have decided to give a try.
Getting up the courage to go to the tryouts was only the 42 of it! When I first started 43 the
practice sessions, I didn’t even know the rules of the game, much 44 what I was doing. Sometimes I’d get
45 and take a shot at the wrong direction—which made me feel really stupid. 46 , I wasn’t the only one
“new” at the game, so I decided to 47 on learning the game, do my best at each practice session, and not
be too hard on myself for the things I didn’t 48 “just yet”.
I practiced and practiced. Soon I knew the 49 and the “moves”. Being part of a team was fun and
motivating. Very soon the competitive 50 in me was winning over my lack of confidence. With time, I

learned how to play and made friends in the 51 — friends who respected my efforts to work hard and

even when I sometimes wasn’t 100 percent 55 I had the right answer. Now I have more self-confidence in
myself.

Although I love my life, it hasn’t been a lot of fun as I’ve been ill for 28 years.
Music has always been a great love of mine and, in my 20s, when my 21 was more manageable, I 22
ten years as a professional singer in restaurants, playing and singing folk songs. 23 that was years ago
and times have changed. 24 I live with mother on a country farm.
Two years ago, I decided that I would need to have some kind of extra work to 25 my disability
pension (残疾抚恤金). 26 I needed to sleep in the afternoons, I was limited in my 27 . I decided that I
would consider 28 to singing in restaurants.
My family are all musicians, so I was 29 when I went into our local music store. I explained that I
wanted to sing again but using recorded karaoke music. I knew that discs were very expensive and I really
didn’t have a lot of 30 to get started. And 31 you
find only three to four songs out of ten on a disc that you can 32 use.
When I told the owner of the shop about my 33 ; he gave me a long thoughtful 34 . “This means a
lot to you, doesn’t it?” he said. “Come with me.”

37 and I’ll record them for you. That should get you started.”
I 38 . Thanking him, I made a time with him to listen to all the songs and choose 39 that I could
sing. I have come full circle with his help.
His 40 still warms my heart and makes me do just that bit extra, when I have the chance.

People in communities have slowly been pushed apart through the years, mostly because people simply

my father years ago. Thank you so much for returning it. May I offer you a reward for your 35 ?”
“No, ma’am,”he said, “My grandmother says that a good deed is its own reward.”
“Well, that’s 36 what my father used to say. What is your name, young man?”
Years later Oscar was staring at the finely carved handle of the umbrella as he remembered Mrs.

As if 38 , a note fell from the paper. It read: Mrs. O’Brien wanted you to 39 this umbrella as a
present for a kind, 40 gesture long ago.

I became a gardener when I was twelve. My early 36 of gardening may not have originated from my
love for nature. It was to 37 my parents.
At that time, we had a big yard in which a beautiful maple tree stood. But my mother often looked
with 38 at this work of natural art. Those golden leaves seemed like tons of rubbish to her, “something else
to 39 !”Seeing the neighbors busy with gardening, my father even thought it a waste of time.
At that age, I always did something 40 to whatever my parents did!If gardening were something they
found 41 , I would plant a garden!
I planted some lily(百合花)seeds in the yard. But they failed to 42 . I continued to plant sunflower
seeds and roses. Wild 43 joy, I found the first rose bloom(开花). One by one, the flowers bloomed their
heads off. 44 , I was touched by this land of wonder.
45 , my parents showed no interest in my garden. My father even 46 at me because he found it was
47 to move around my garden to the driveway. To my mother’s 48 , I put in her vase my real roses which,
in her eyes, were simply weeds 49 flowers.
Regardless of their 50 , I kept on planting my garden and 51 to enjoy the pleasure of gardening.
Plants make such good companions: they breathe, they bloom, they 52 to care and love.
It has been many years since I made my first garden out of my desire to 53 my parents. Today I
becomeknown as Mrs. Greenthumbs, teaching gardening and hosting a gardeningshow, which makes my
parents feel very 54 . And now I could say it is my affection for 55 that makes me a real gardener.

I was growing up in Kuala Lumpur in the early 1960s, 38 children from different races and religions

was bothered that Ismail was a Malay Muslim and I was an Indian Hindu—we just 41 our differences.
Perhaps, our elders had not filled our heads with unnecessary advice, well 42 or otherwise.
We were nine when we became friends. During the school holidays, we’d 43 the countryside on our
bicycles, hoping to 44 the unexpected. At times Ismail would accompany my family as we made a rare
shopping trip to town. We would be glad of his 45 .
When I was twelve, my family moved to Johor. Ismail’s family later returned to their village, and I 46

One spring afternoon in 1983, I stopped a taxi in Kuala Lumpur. I 47 my destination. The driver

Ismail! Even after two 51 we still recognized each other. Grasping his shoulder, I felt a true affection,

If we can allow our children to be 53 without prejudice, they’ll build friendships with people,
regardless of race or religion, who will be 54 their side through thick and thin. On such friendships are
societies built and 55 we can truly be, as William Shakespeare once wrote,“we happy few, we band of

Around twenty years ago I was living in York. 21 I had a lot of experience and a Master’s degree, I

I was 23 a school bus to make ends meet and 24 with a friend of mine, for I had lost my flat. I had

I fell in love with Yosemite National Park the first time I saw it, when I was 13. My parents took us
there for camping. On the way out, I asked them to wait while I ran up to El Capitan, a 16 rock of 3,300
feet straight up. I touched that giant rock and knew 17 I wanted to climb it. That has been my life’s
passion(钟爱) ever since— 18 the rocks and mountains of Yosemite. I’ve long made Yosemite my 19 .
About 15 years ago I started seeing a lot of 20 , like toilet paper, beer cans, and empty boxes, around
the area. It’s 21 me why visitors started respecting the place 22 and treated such a beautiful home-like
place this way.
I tried 23 trash(垃圾) myself, but the job was too big. I would 24 an hour or two on the job, only to
find the area trashed all over again weeks later. Finally, I got so 25 it that I decided something had to
change.
As a rock-climbing guide, I knew 26 about organizing any big event. But in 2004, together with some
climbers, I set a date for a 27 . On that day, more than 300 people 28 . Over three days we collected
about 6,000 pounds of trash. It was amazing how much we were able to 29 . I couldn’t believe the 30 we
made—the park looked clean!
Each year volunteers come for the cleanup from everywhere. In 2007 alone, 2,945 people picked up
42,330 pounds of trash and 31 132 miles of roadway.
I often hear people 32 about their surroundings. If you are one of them, I would say the only way to

The concept of solitude ( 独 处 ) in the digital world is almost non-existent. In the world of digital
technology, e-mail, social networking and online video games, information is meant to be 36 . Solitude can
be hard to discover 37 it has been given up. In this respect, new technologies have 38 our culture.
The desire to be connected has brought solitude to a(n) 39 as we’ve known it. People have become so
40 in the world of networks and connections that one can often be contacted 41 they’d rather not be.
Today we can talk, text, e-mail, chat and blog ( 写 博 客 ), not only from our 42 , but from our mobile
phones as well.
Most developed nations have become 43 on digital technology simply because they’ve grown

46 . From this point of view, technology has changed the culture of work. Being reachable might feel like a
47 to those who may not want to be able to be contacted at all times.
I suppose the positive side is that solitude is still possible for anyone who 48 wants it. Computers can
be shut 49 and mobile phones can be turned off. The ability to be “connected” and “on” has many 50 ,
as well as disadvantages. Travelers have ended up 51 on mountains, and mobile phones have saved
countless lives. They can also make people feel 52 and forced to answer unwanted calls or 53 to
unwanted texts.

A Leap(跳跃)to Honor
Leaping on a narrow balance beam(平衡木)is not easy. But Lola Walter, a 13-year-old gymnast, is an
expert at it.
To perfect her skills, Lola 36 for four hours a day, five days a week. At the state championships in
March, she finished seventh out of 16 girls.
That’s especially impressive, 37 she is legally blind, born with a rare condition that causes her eyes

go.”says Lola.
To be a top-level gymnast, one must be brave. The beam is probably the most 46 for anyone
because it’s four inches wide. At the state competition, Lola didn’t fall 47 the beam. In fact, she got an
8.1 out of 10—her highest score yet.
Lola doesn’t want to be 48 differently from the other girls on her team.At competitions, the judges
don’t know about her vision 49 .She doesn’t tell them, because she doesn’t think they need to know. Her
mom is amazed by her 50 attitude.
Lola never thinks about 51 . She is presently at level 7 while the highest is level 10 in gymnastics.
Her 52 is to reach level 9.She says she wants to be a gymnastics coach to pass down what she’s learned
to other kids 53 she grows up.

I used to believe in the American Dream, which meant a job,a mortgage( 按揭 ),credit cards, success.I

One year, through a series of unhappy events,it all fell 37 .I found myself homeless and alone.I had

upon a shabby house four miles up a winding mountain road 40 the Potomac River in West Virginia. It
was 41 ,full of broken glass and rubbish.I found the owner, rented it,and 42 a corner to camp in.
The locals knew nothing about me, 43 slowly, they started teaching me the 44 of being a
neighbor.They dropped off blankets,candles,and tools,and began 45 around to chat.They started to
teach me a belief in a 46 American Dream—not the one of individual achievement but of 47 .What I had believed in,all those things I thought were 48 for a civilized life, were nonexistent in this
place. 49 on the mountain,my most valuable possessions were my 50 with my neighbors.

“Look,it’s a Baldy!”A boy shouted in my direction across the playground. Even though I was used to
regular insults(侮辱)because of the 11 on my head, it was 12 horrible to hear. I sighed as I headed

19 I didn’t, people would call me horrible names like Baldy. Although my friends were always comforting

My grandmother became a widow in 1970. Shortly after that, we went to the 31 shelter to pick out a

spots, the dog was named Penny.
Grandma and Penny quickly became very 34 to each other, but that attachment grew much stronger
about three years later 35 Grandma had a stroke(中风). Grandma could no longer 36 easily, so when

bottom of a flight of stairs. So a mechanism(机械装置)using a rope and pulley(滑轮)was 40 from
the door to a handle at the top of the stairs. Grandma just had to pull the handle to open and close the door.
If the store was 41 Penny’s favorite dog food, Grandma would make one of us 42 Penny browned beef
with potatoes in it. I can remember making 43 of my grandmother by saying that she loved that dog
better than she loved her family.
As the years passed, it was not 44 for Grandma and Penny to separate each other. If Grandma went
to take her nap(打盹), Penny stayed by her side until she 45 . As Penny aged, she could no longer jump
up on the bed, so she 46 on the rug (垫子)beside the bed. If Grandma went into the 47 , Penny would
walk along beside her, wait outside the door and accompany her 48 to the bed or chair. Grandma never
went anywhere without her 49 companion by her side.
The time came when both my grandmother’s and Penny’s 50 were failing fast. After fifteen years of
loving companionship, Grandma and Penny passed away within a few hours of each other.

A man hired a taxi outside the airfield. The cab had a woolen carpet with 31 lace edges. On the glass
partition that 32 the driver’s seat was copy of a famous painting. Its windows were all clean. The
customer was very much 33 and said to the driver, “I've never seen a nicer 34 ,” “Thank you for your
praise,” the driver answered 35 .“The car isn’t mine,” said the driver. “It belongs to the company. I used to be a 36 of cabs. When they
returned, all of them were as 37 as garbage cans with cigarette butts and rubbish 38 here and there. On
the seats and door – handles could be found something 39 like peanut sauce or, chewing gum. Why so? I
thought if the car itself were very clean the passengers would most 40 be considerate and refrain from

littering.”
“So when I got a 41 to be a taxi – driver, I began 42 my idea into practice – to tidy and 43 the car.
Now before a new passenger gets on my car, I’d make a cheek and be sure it is in good order. When my car
44 after a day’s work, it always remains 45 .”
When doing a thing, one makes efforts and wants to see the result. To change others, one has to make
twice the 46 but get half the result. To change oneself is the other way round – more fruit with less effort.
One had better ask oneself why one makes 47 on others much more than on oneself. 48 you take enough
care to do as best you can for other people’s sake, your efforts will yield results. If you 49 the inner world
of your own, examine yourself and wipe out the dust and dirt, instead of fixing your eyes on other people,
you will find a cheerful 50 for yourself and create a pleasant environment for others.

I was surprised when Jackie chose Mozart’s Concerto #21 in C Major and not 44 for what I heard

stage and put my arms around Jackie in joy. “I’ve never heard you play like that! How’d you do it?”
“Well…remember I told you my mom was sick?” he explained, “Actually she had cancer and 47 this
morning. And…she was born deaf so tonight was the first time she ever heard me play in heaven. I wanted

Culture shock is a complex topic, but I'm a simple man with simple perspectives. So my experience of
foreign culture boils down to three basic stages: anger, acceptance and appreciation.
When I __16__ my life in China I was often filled with frustration and __17__over the way things were.
Things were seen as clearly “__18__” and I rejected the view of there being other ways of doing things.
Afterwards I came to __19__different ways of doing things __20__still saw my own ways as superior.
My views were still heavily colored by __21__and I often accepted situations I felt __22__by simply
coining the phrase "That's China," __23__ China was a backward country that simply didn't do things
correctly. Finally, __24__, I came to understand and appreciate the new __25__ and ways of doing things,
sometimes using them as effectively as the__26__.
For example, fish is never __27__ with the head in my country, thus my feelings went from “Ugh! I
can’t eat this! The fish is __28__at me saying, `You're a __29__ man.' Take this off the table,” to “I’ll let my
friends enjoy, but I'll just stick with the other__30__,” and to "Would anyone mind if I eat the eyeball?"
It is not the same with every westerner, and some take __31__ than others to go through the three
stages. It all depends on how __32__you are and how tightly you __33__to your own culture. It took a little
over a year of living in China __34__ I finally appreciate the new culture. Now, I'm more __35__in China
than in my own country.

playing, thinking that it must take 41 to perform on her own in front of hundreds of people she didn’t
know.
She might have felt my 42 for she occasionally looked in my direction.
By now I was telling myself that I could at least tell her how good she sounded. I walked 43 and put
some money in her box and she expressed her thanks with a smile on her face.
I asked her 44 , “Why are you playing the piano in the middle of this crowded place?”
She explained to me that she sees so many 45 people in the world that she is trying to relieve the pain
by 46 motivational music.
Instead of continuing my way home, I said to her, “I have been going through a 47 time lately, but
you’ve made me 48 again.”
“I’m happy that I could be 49 to you,” she replied. “Why are you so sad?”
I told her my story and said, “I’m not so 50 about what to do….”
“You see, here’s the 51 ,” she responded. “When you were walking, your head was down.” She looked
me in the eyes and went on, “Don’t look defeated, because 52 comes in different ways and if your head is
down you might never see it. You should 53 more … lift your head up.”
I was really 54 by what she said! I did hold my head up and soon got through the difficult time.
