Here are some questions to think about when you are learning your spellings this week. What does this word mean? What type of word is it? (noun, verb, adjective, adverb, preposition) How could you use these in a sentence? Which part of the word is tricky to remember?

Grammar: To use fronted adverbials This week we are going to revisit our learning about fronted adverbials. Before you begin, on a piece of paper can you write down some notes about the things you already know about them. Use these questions to help you get started:

What is a fronted adverbial? Why do we use it? What punctuation do I need to remember? What can a fronted adverbial tell the reader?

Using this image, can you write some sentences that include fronted adverbials? If you want to challenge yourself, use this interactive dice to tell you which type of fronted adverbial you need to include. https://www.online-stopwatch.com/chance-games/roll-a-dice/If you roll a:

Reading: To summarise the key information from a text. This week we would like you to develop your summarising skills.

What is the difference between retelling a story and summarising?

Retelling Summarising Retells the story

Long, with specific details Includes events in chronological order

Identifies and tells only the most important parts of the story

Written or said in the reader’s own words

Short and focused Includes story elements: characters,

setting, plot, problem and resolution.

Read the text ‘How to train your dragon’ and write down any key words that you have spotted. If you are able to print this out, you could underline the words or phrases to help you. Answer the questions about the text, thinking carefully about the important parts of the story.

Here is an example to help you: Look at this text about the Tudor period. “500 years ago, the world was a very different place. European people had only just made contact with the Americans. England and Scotland were separate kingdoms, each with their own royal family. During this time, the Tudor family ruled England and Wales from 1485 to 1603. They encouraged new religious ideas, exploration and colonisation. There were six

different monarchs during the 118 years of the Tudor reign.”

This is an example of the same text summarised:

"The Tudors reigned England and Wales from 1485 to 1603.

England and Scotland were separate kingdoms.

There were six different monarchs during their reign."

Think about this acronym to help you:S – short

U – use your own wordsM – main pointEnglish:Our theme for this week is ‘Who inspires you?’ We would like to introduce you to Zaha Hadid. Zaha is a British Iraqi architect who has designed many famous buildings around the world. She was the first woman to ever win the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2004. Here are two books that will tell you all about this inspirational woman. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DSQM2P_nmHI&safe=truehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78q5PnSiMBc&safe=true

This week we would like you to research somebody who inspires you and write a fact file to tell us about them. You might choose somebody in your family, a

friend or somebody famous who you look up to. If you wanted to, you could research somebody from one of these books:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YlFxH5HDWFs - Amelia Earharthttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lB3rkG2Lepo – Coco Chanelhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vj742IkCgxk – Stephen Hawkinghttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tXbNEvm1k1E – Bruce Leehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aBDTSNc8NPw – Marie Curie

Task one: To research an inspirational person and retrieve facts. Please choose somebody who inspires you and research them. We would like you to retrieve some facts that you are going to use in your writing this week. Remember that when we retrieve facts, we need to read through the information and then write our sentences in our own words. Choose 5 or 6 facts that you would like to include in your writing later on this week.

Task two: To plan a fact file about an inspirational personUsing our planning template and youtube video, plan your fact file about the person who inspires you. Remember that the planning stage is very important as it helps us when we come to writing.

Task three: To write a fact file about an inspirational personWrite your fact file about your chosen inspirational person, ensuring that you use your plan to help you structure your ideas. Your success criteria for your writing is:

Conjunctions to extend and develop your ideas Adjectives Factual information

Fact files have images and captions, so decorate your fact file with drawings that relate to your famous person! Enjoy

Task four: To edit and improve my writing, looking for spelling, punctuation and grammar errors.Look at the editing poster that we have attached to the blog – can you remember the different steps? Before you begin, think about why editing is important in the writing process. Re-read your work and work your way through the steps – if you do not have a dictionary at home, you can use this website to help you check your spellings: https://kids.wordsmyth.net/we/

We would love to see your completed fact files, if you would like to share them please send a picture to the office Maths:Last week we looked at addition and subtraction and this week we are going to recap our learning all about multiplication and division. Alongside your maths tasks this week, we would like you to go on times table rockstars and take part in our competition! All you need to do is play in any game mode and your points will go towards your class total. Playing on times table rockstars will help to develop your fluency when answering multiplication and division problems.

Task one: To recognise and use factor pairs.Watch our youtube video to help you with this task

Factor pairs are two numbers which can be multiplied together to give you a product (answer). In this task, we would like you to look at factor pairs and think about commutativity in the calculations – this will help you with solving calculations mentally. Can you remember what commutative means? Look at the example below and see if you can remember. Explain what this vocabulary means to an adult – remember to use full sentences! Here is a calculation:6 X 8 = 48 8 x 6 = 48

Commutativity means that I can switch the numbers in my calculation around and I will always get the same answer. I am able to do this when adding and multiplying but division and subtraction calculations are not commutative because if the numbers switch order then my answer will change.

Create your own factor rainbows for these numbers below: Remember some will have more than one factor pair!24103650193214

Task two: To solve multiplication problems using a formal written method. Watch this video to recap the grid method before beginning to solve these problems.

1. 65 x 82. 34 x 63. 55 x 34. 86 x 10 5. 47 x 126. 13 x 96

Page 5: mrslawrenceblog.files.wordpress.com · Web view2020/06/07  · We would like to introduce you to Zaha Hadid. Zaha is a British Iraqi architect who has designed many famous buildings

There is one question in this set that you shouldn’t need the grid method for, can you spot our sneaky calculation?

Challenge: Instead of using the grid method, have a go at using long multiplication which we began looking at in school. See the steps below to help you remember what you need to do!

Task three: To solve division problems using a formal written methodFor this task you will be solving division problems using a number line. Watch our youtube video to help you. Here are the steps you need to remember to use:

Have a go at solving these calculations – remember that you need to begin by chunking 10 times the number first if you are able to.

1. 72 ÷ 3 =2. 185 ÷ 5 =3. 96 ÷ 8 = 4. 88 ÷ 4 = 5. 884 ÷ 4 =6. 609 ÷ 3 =

Here are some extra questions that have

remainders. What is a remainder? What does it mean if the answer contains a remainder?

1. 17 ÷ 4 = 2. 46 ÷ 5 = 3. 64 ÷ 10 = 4. 146 ÷ 12 = 5. 30 ÷ 8 =

Challenge: Have a go at these questions using long division. Solve the questions using both

methods in order to check your answers.

Task four: To solve problems involving the four operations. Can you put the numbers 1 to 8 into the circles so that the four calculations are correct?

You may wish to use this interactivity to help you: https://nrich.maths.org/2005

Page 7: mrslawrenceblog.files.wordpress.com · Web view2020/06/07  · We would like to introduce you to Zaha Hadid. Zaha is a British Iraqi architect who has designed many famous buildings

Here are some questions to help you begin solving the problem: Which circles could contain the 1? What are the possibilities for the multiplication?

PE:This week we would like you to complete the sockfest activities:

Here are some videos of how to complete the challenge: https://www.activeoxfordshire.org/school-games/Please also have a go at the cultural activity which has been attached to the blog.

Here are some other activities that you could have a go at this week:

https://family.gonoodle.com/activities/im-still-standing https://family.gonoodle.com/activities/total-motion

Topic Task one: FrenchYou will be practicing how to talk about your family and your hobbies in French. Watch the video demonstration and then complete the activities at home. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zqy9vwxPerhaps you could have a go at sharing this with your new teacher on ‘meet the teacher day’ if you would like to.

Art:We would like you to choose one of Zaha Hadid’s buildings that she has designed and sketch it. Look carefully at the shapes she uses and think about how you can use the different sketching techniques to make your picture detailed.

10 top tips for staying safe on the internet

1) Don’t post any personal information online – like your full name, email address, mobile number, etc.

2) Think carefully before posting pictures or videos of yourself. Once you’ve put a picture of yourself online, most people can see it and may be able to download it, it’s not just yours anymore.

3) Keep your privacy settings as high as possible!

4) Never give out your passwords.

5) Don’t befriend people you don’t know.

Page 9: mrslawrenceblog.files.wordpress.com · Web view2020/06/07  · We would like to introduce you to Zaha Hadid. Zaha is a British Iraqi architect who has designed many famous buildings

6) Don’t meet up with people you’ve met online. Speak to your parent or carer about people suggesting you do.

7) Remember that not everyone online is who they say they are.

8) Think carefully about what you say before you post something online.

9) Respect other people’s views, even if you don’t agree with someone else’s views doesn’t mean you need to be rude.

10) If you see something online that makes you feel uncomfortable, unsafe or worried: leave the website, turn off your computer if you want to and tell a trusted adult immediately.
